All State-run hostels in Tamil Nadu to be renamed ‘Social Justice Hostels': CM Stalin
A total of 2,739 hostels are operated by various departments of the State government, benefitting 1.79 lakh students.
The decision to rename State-run hostels followed recommendations made by a committee led by retired Madras High Court judge K. Chandru, constituted to advise the government on measures to eliminate caste and racial differences among students in educational institutions. The government also issued a G.O. on June 25 this year, with an aim to eliminate caste differences and promote harmony among students, the Chief Minister recalled.
'While we bring light into the lives of students from marginalised sections across the State, it is also essential to remove religious and caste markers to create an egalitarian society. It is with this objective the Tamil Nadu government has decided to remove caste markers and rename these hostels, as part of a series of steps being undertaken,' Mr. Stalin said in a statement. Except for the change in the nomenclature, the rights of the students, their benefits, and other assistance would remain the same, he said.
In cases where some hostels were named after late leaders, they would continue to be called by the name of those leaders, besides 'Social Justice Hostel,' he clarified. 'These efforts are part of the steps being undertaken to remove caste differences among the future generations of Tamil society,' he said, adding that the DMK government was committed to creating a society with social justice, equity, and equality before law.
Mr. Stalin also recalled that in April this year, he announced that the term 'colony' would be removed from official records and public usage, as it has come to refer to certain sections of society in a derogatory manner. He also referred to his request to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rename certain castes from the Scheduled Castes that end with 'n' or 'a' with 'r'.
At present, there are 98,909 students in 1,332 hostels to benefit those from the Scheduled Castes and 2,190 students in 48 hostels to benefit those from the Scheduled Tribes. There are 41,194 students in 727 hostels run for those from the Backward Classes, 26,653 students in 455 hostels run for those from Most Backward Classes, and 9,372 students in 157 hostels run for those from Denotified Communities. A total of 1,250 students were in 20 hostels run for those from minorities.

"All languages are national languages...": RSS' Sunil Ambekar
New Delhi [India], July 7 (ANI): Amid the recent language controversy in Maharashtra and Karnataka, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh Sunil Ambekar said on Monday that the RSS has long maintained a clear stance on this issue that all Indian languages are national languages. Responding to a reporter's question on what Sangh thinks about the recent language row 'brewing up in states leading to division among society', Sunil Ambekar said, 'Sangh has always had the stand that all languages of India are national languages. People speak their own languages in their own places. Primary education should be disseminated in the same language, which is what everyone has been requesting. This is already established.' Recently, in Maharashtra, a viral video from Thane district surfaced where a shop owner was assaulted allegedly for not speaking in Marathi. In a similar incident, entrepreneur Sushil Kedia's office in Worli was vandalised earlier this month. A total of 5 MNS workers were arrested in this connection. Additionally, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut clarified that their party is not opposed to the Hindi language, but rather to making it mandatory in primary education. 'The Southern states have been fighting for this issue for years. Their stand against the imposition of Hindi means they will not speak Hindi and nor let anyone speak Hindi. But that is not our stand in Maharashtra. We speak Hindi. Our stand is that the strictness for Hindi in primary schools will not be tolerated. Our fight is limited to this,' Raut said earlier this month. Meanwhile, in Karnataka, a controversy erupted following an alleged controversial statement which was recently made by actor Kamal Haasan in May over the Kannada language, leading to agitation in the State against the release of the Tamil actor's movie 'Thug Life' in Karnataka. Hassan has allegedly said, 'Kannada was born out of Tamil'. Further, on the situation in Manipur, RSS leader Sunil Ambekar said that a phase of normalcy has started to return in the northeastern state. 'When the situation deteriorates somewhere, it doesn't improve within a day. But if we compare to last year, normalcy has started setting in. It is the beginning of peace. Dialogues are being held on both sides, so a path will come out of it,' the RSS leader said. Last month, Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated that efforts are being made to find an 'amicable solution' and restore peace to the ethnic violence hit Manipur, further stating that meetings were also being held with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and NDA MLAs to form a government in the state. 'We are only focusing on the current crisis. We are approaching the central government and concerned persons to find an amicable solution and bring peace to the state of Manipur. We are also meeting with the BJP and NDA MLAs to form a government in the state of Manipur. Now peace is being restored, and the central government, under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is working day and night to bring peace,' said the former CM. President's Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, days after BJP leader N. Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister. Ethnic conflict broke out in the State on May 3, 2023, causing the loss of lives of hundreds of people. (ANI)

T.N. Planning Commission submits four reports to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin
The State Planning Commission on Monday submitted four detailed reports on various subjects to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the Secretariat in Chennai. One of the reports called for profiling and data organisation of all mines in Tamil Nadu urgently to facilitate large-scale land-use planning. The report 'Mapping Mines in Tamil Nadu — Assessing their Restoration Potential' said the process could begin with mines exceeding a certain size threshold. Calling for collecting the details of all mines and capturing drone images, it said detailed and up-to-date information about mines would streamline the study and planning process for restoration and land-use planning at the State-level. Deputy Chief Minister and SPC's ex-officio Vice-Chairperson Udhayanidhi Stalin, SPC's executive chairperson J. Jeyaranjan, and senior officials submitted the reports to the Chief Minister. The report 'Child Nutrition — Key Challenges and Strategies' recommended emphasis on improving linear growth among children to reduce stunting, with a focus on early-life interventions. It called for focus on the first 1,000 days of life but also stressed extending interventions to pre-pregnancy and adolescence. Regular monitoring of children for weight, height, and mid-upper arm circumference, improving dietary diversity for young children were among the recommendations. The report 'Urban Growth and Thermal Stress: A Decadal Assessment of Built-up Area and Climate Interactions in Tamil Nadu' called for a comprehensive heat mitigation strategy for the State. It recommended community engagement, data-driven monitoring, block-level interventions, building construction guidelines, and urbanisation regulations. The regulations include urban infrastructure and land-use planning, urban building construction guidelines, hilly region construction regulations, rural area construction standards, and retrofitting existing structures, among others. The 'Framework for Nature-based Solutions for Enhanced Urban Resilience in Tier 2 Cities of Tamil Nadu - Framework Report' said that Tamil Nadu reflected the global trends vividly with its Tier 2 cities experiencing accelerated economic and demographic expansion. 'This urban growth, however, is contrasted against rising climate risks including urban floods, decline in groundwater, cyclones and ecological fragmentation, calling for urgent, sustainable, and resilient urban planning approaches,' it said. The proposed framework developed jointly by TN-SLURB, GIZ and CUBE presented a strategic and technical framework for mainstreaming NBS into the urban planning systems of Tier 2 cities in Tamil Nadu, it said.
