All State-run hostels in Tamil Nadu to be renamed ‘Social Justice Hostels': CM Stalin

The Hindu8 hours ago
All hostels being run by various departments of the Tamil Nadu government for the benefit of school and college students from poor and marginalised sections of society would henceforth be called 'Samooga Needhi Viduthigal' or 'Social Justice Hostels', Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced on Monday (July 7, 2025).
A total of 2,739 hostels are operated by various departments of the State government, benefitting 1.79 lakh students.
The decision to rename State-run hostels followed recommendations made by a committee led by retired Madras High Court judge K. Chandru, constituted to advise the government on measures to eliminate caste and racial differences among students in educational institutions. The government also issued a G.O. on June 25 this year, with an aim to eliminate caste differences and promote harmony among students, the Chief Minister recalled.
'While we bring light into the lives of students from marginalised sections across the State, it is also essential to remove religious and caste markers to create an egalitarian society. It is with this objective the Tamil Nadu government has decided to remove caste markers and rename these hostels, as part of a series of steps being undertaken,' Mr. Stalin said in a statement. Except for the change in the nomenclature, the rights of the students, their benefits, and other assistance would remain the same, he said.
In cases where some hostels were named after late leaders, they would continue to be called by the name of those leaders, besides 'Social Justice Hostel,' he clarified. 'These efforts are part of the steps being undertaken to remove caste differences among the future generations of Tamil society,' he said, adding that the DMK government was committed to creating a society with social justice, equity, and equality before law.
Mr. Stalin also recalled that in April this year, he announced that the term 'colony' would be removed from official records and public usage, as it has come to refer to certain sections of society in a derogatory manner. He also referred to his request to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rename certain castes from the Scheduled Castes that end with 'n' or 'a' with 'r'.
At present, there are 98,909 students in 1,332 hostels to benefit those from the Scheduled Castes and 2,190 students in 48 hostels to benefit those from the Scheduled Tribes. There are 41,194 students in 727 hostels run for those from the Backward Classes, 26,653 students in 455 hostels run for those from Most Backward Classes, and 9,372 students in 157 hostels run for those from Denotified Communities. A total of 1,250 students were in 20 hostels run for those from minorities.

"If You Have Courage...": Nishikant Dubey To Raj Thackeray In Marathi Row

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party's Nishikant Dubey on Monday waded into the Marathi vs Hindi row that has roiled Maharashtra politics - particularly before the critical Mumbai civic body polls this year - and took aim at Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, challenging him to visit other states, such as Uttar Pradesh or Tamil Nadu, to beat up people who speak Urdu or Tamil. The Lok Sabha MP's fierce attack - "tumhe patak-patak ke maarenge (you will get thrashed black and blue)" - he thundered at Raj Thackeray, comes after goons from the MNS have assaulted - with impunity so far - at least three people over the past week for not speaking Marathi. "If you are courageous enough (to) beat those who speak Hindi (in Maharashtra) ... then beat those who speak Urdu or Tamil. If you are such a big 'boss', come out of Maharashtra... come to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu - 'tumko patak patak ke maarenge'..." he told news agency ANI. #WATCH | Guwahati, Assam | On Raj Thackeray's remark 'beat but don't make a video', BJP MP Nishikant Dubey says, "...You people are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have?... If you are courageous enough and beat those who speak Hindi, then you should beat… — ANI (@ANI) July 7, 2025 "Come to Bihar..." Dubey challenged Raj Thackeray, criticising the MNS chief and his cousin, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray for theatrics - the 'victory rally' in Mumbai on Saturday - before the election. "BMC election is due, so Raj and Uddhav are doing cheap politics..." The BJP leader also claimed that much of the wealth generated by Mumbai-based conglomerates, such as the Tatas and Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Limited, actually comes from outside the state, and specifically from Hindi-speaking states like Jharkhand. "You are saying people will have to speak Marathi? But whose bread are you eating? There is Tata, Birla, and Reliance in Maharashtra, yes, but they are not unique there... Tata established its factory here (in Bihar) ... you people are surviving on our money..." Dubey raged. "You have no industries in your state. You do not generate much tax. States like Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha have mines. What do you have?" Dubey's criticism follows Raj Thackeray's shocking 'advice' to his party workers - that they should assault people not speaking in Marathi but not record the attack. The 'advice' was in reference to seven MNS goons attacking a shopkeeper in Mumbai's Mira Road suburb. The attackers filmed the assault and posted it online, leading to widespread outrage but very little concrete action from the police, who only 'questioned' the thugs and then let them leave. The incident - and others in Thane and Pune - led to a political row. The Thackeray cousins - estranged for two decades - found common ground in their quest to battle 'Hindi imposition'. The two have claimed credit for forcing the state's ruling Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, to rollback two orders making Hindi the default language for primary school students. To celebrate that the cousins shared the stage at the rally, where Uddhav Thackeray announced his Sena and the MNS will contest the Mumbai civic polls together.

Madras High Court directs Centre, State to coordinate and take steps to protect ancient Jain monuments in and around Madurai district

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the State government to coordinate with the Centre and take appropriate steps to protect the ancient Jain monuments in Madurai district. The court was hearing a public interest litigation petition filed in 2019 by Madurai Jain Heritage Centre, which was represented by its secretary, S. Anandha Raj. The petitioner had sought a direction to the Archaeological Survey of India and the Department of Archaeology to appoint adequate staff to protect the Jain sites in and around the district. The Jain caves and beds such as Yanaimalai, Tirupparankundram, Keelavalavu, Varichiyur, Keelakuyilkudi, Arittapatti, Karadipatti Perumal Malai, Kongarpuliyankulam, Vikramangalam and Mangulam should be preserved and protected, he said. He sought a direction to the authorities concerned to take appropriate steps to curb the conversion of the protected monuments into places of religious worship and defacing of the heritage monuments. The State submitted that six of the monuments were under the control of the State government and all measures had been taken to protect them. Watchmen had been appointed in all the six places. The Centre, however, submitted it was yet to receive necessary proposals from the State government for initiating further actions. A Division Bench of Justices S. M. Subramaniam and A.D. Maria Clete observed it was needless to mention that coordination between the Central and the State governments for protecting the ancient monuments was of paramount importance. The court directed the State government to coordinate with the Centre and initiate appropriate actions to protect the ancient monuments in and around Madurai district. It directed the authorities to undertake periodical inspections to protect the monuments.

Minister Ashish Shelar slams BJP MP over remarks against Marathi people

BJP leader and Minister Ashish Shelar on Friday responded to remarks made by its party MP Nishikant Dubey, who had said that the Thackerays (Uddhav and Raj) would be 'thrashed repeatedly' if they stepped outside Maharashtra and accused Marathi people of surviving on 'our money'. Without naming Dubey, Shelar said in the Legislative Assembly that no one should question the contribution of the Marathi community. 'Some MP from Jharkhand has commented on the work done by Marathi people. I won't name him—he is not a member of this House. But the Mahayuti and BJP are very clear: anyone can speak within the limits of law, but no one has the right to question the deeds and contribution of Marathi people,' he said. Shelar added, 'The whole nation knows our contribution to the GDP. We made the country's first film and established the first navy. Marathi people do not live on alms given by anyone.' Nishikant Dubey, BJP MP from Godda in Jharkhand, had earlier said, 'If the Thackerays step out of Maharashtra—and come to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh or Tamil Nadu—they will be thrashed repeatedly. You people (Marathi) are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have? If you are brave enough to beat Hindi speakers, then you should also beat those who speak Urdu, Tamil, and Telugu.' Shelar told the House that while he was refraining from naming the MP, he felt compelled to respond. 'It is not just about politics–it is about respect for the people of this state,' he said. Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray also hit out at Dubey. 'No one knows these people here and they should not speak anything about us. They have no stature, and one should not pay attention to what these people say.'
