Four Malaysians in ASEAN all-stars squad to face Man Utd
Four of Malaysia's finest footballers are in the ASEAN All-Stars squad to face English Premier League (EPL) giants Manchester United in a friendly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here on Wednesday (May 28).
ShekhinahPR, the official public relations agency for the friendly, said the quartet are Muhammad Azam Azmi Murad, Muhammad Adib Abdul Ra'op, Muhammad Haziq Nadzli and Declan Lambert.
Terengganu FC right-back Muhammad Azam, known for his pace and attacking runs, said he is honoured to represent the country in the friendly.
'Wearing the national colours in this All-Stars side is a proud moment. I aim to give my all and show what Malaysian football can achieve,' he said in a statement issued by ShekhinahPR today.
Penang FC winger Muhammad Adib, meanwhile, expressed excitement about the opportunity to play against a world-class team.
'This is more than just a match; it's a chance for all of us to demonstrate our skill and heart on the international stage,' he said.
Meanwhile, Perak FC goalkeeper Muhammad Haziq said he is ready to step up to the challenge of facing some of the world's top attacking players.
'Standing between the posts against a team like Manchester United is a challenge I've dreamt of. I'm ready to do whatever it takes to keep our side in the game,' he said.
Kuala Lumpur (KL) City FC's Lambert, who has been a Malaysian international since 2022, will anchor the defence with his experience and leadership.
'I'm honoured to lead this defence alongside my national teammates. Together, we'll show the spirit of Malaysian football,' he said.
The ASEAN All-Stars team will be coached by South Korean Kim Sang Sik, who recently led Vietnam to the 2024 ASEAN Championship title.
The friendly, which is part of Manchester United's pre-season tour, is expected to draw tens of thousands of fans and highlight the best of Southeast Asian football talent.

Since then, the Golden Star Warriors have won seven of their eight meetings in all competitions, with one match ending in a draw. KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh proved again why he is hailed as the best mixed doubles player in the world. He almost single-handedly ended the challenge of Malaysia's Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei at the Indonesia Open semi-final today. And yesterday, he played a key role in dismantling another Malaysian pair, world No. 5 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai in the last eight. World No. 6 Dechapol and his relatively new partner, Supissara Paewsampran came from behind to beat Tang Jie-Ee Wei 21-23, 21-15, 21-11 in 65 minutes at the Istora Senayan. "We did great in the first game but when it came to point to point, we didn't grab our chance," said Ee Wei. Dechapol, the 2021 world champion with former partner Sapsiree Taerattanachai, started combining with Supissara seven months ago, and have already won six World Tour titles. Tang Jie took the blame for the defeat, citing his higher error-rate during the crucial stages of the second and third games. "We tried to create attacking options, but I was making a lot of unforced errors at the net and lost points there. They played better but I have to take the responsibility (for the defeat)," said Tang Jie. "I think I couldn't handle the shots well at mid-court where I made mistakes." Dechapol-Supissara have now improved their head-to-head record against Tang Jie-Ee Wei to 3-1. Sze Fei-Izzuddin feeling the weight of world No.1 crown
KUALA LUMPUR: The world No.1 crown is getting heavy for Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani who sagged under it at this week's Indonesia Open. The Malaysian top seeds unexpectedly went down 21-19, 6-21, 21-19 to Indonesia's world No. 8 Sabar Karyaman-Moh Reza Isfahani in the last eight. Sze Fei-Izzuddin should have won as they were leading 19-17 in the rubber. Perhaps the pressure and the expectations got to them. Sze Fei hopes that the setback will make them stronger. "Painful losses, moments of doubt... but every struggle is shaping something bigger," wrote Sze Fei on Instagram. "Trust the process especially when it's hard." Sze Fei-Izzuddin became the first Malaysians to scale the world No. 1 spot since Lee Chong Wei last held it in June 2017, and the first men's pair since Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong's achievement in March that year. Sze Fei-Izzuddin's struggles were already evident in the first two rounds of the Indonesia Open where they needed three games to overcome Taiwan's world No. 21 Lee Fang Cheh-Lee Fang Jen and 28th-ranked compatriots Nur Mohd Azriyn-Tan Wee Kiong. Beating these opponents used to be routine for the Malaysian duo who captured four World Tour titles — the Japan, China, Arctic and India Opens — since August last year. This is because Sze Fei-Izzuddin's rivals have been analysing their play and coming up with more detailed strategies. Sze Fei-Izzuddin have not reached the semi-finals on the World Tour since their last victory — at the India Open in January.
