Silver lining for Perak?
PETALING JAYA: There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel for Perak.
The Silver State club chairman Datuk Seri Azim Zabidi revealed that they could have a new investor soon and would be able to meet the Malaysian Football League (MFL) club licensing deadline today.
'As long as we have proof of funds, it should not be an issue. I did say three companies have expressed interest but there is one taking it further already,' said Azim.
'We can't disclose the identity of the investor yet, but we are looking to wrap things up quickly.'
Perak were owned by XOX Pro Sport Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of XOX Berhad, which took over the club in 2022 from Impact Media and Communication (IMC) Sdn Bhd.
Two weeks ago, Perak, eight-time Malaysia Cup champions, officially announced their withdrawal from next season's Super League due to worsening financial troubles.
Besides Perak, another club likely to pull out from the Super League are Pahang, with players revealing that they had received letters stating the team's decision not to play in the top flight.
Pahang's management have yet to issue any statement on their future plans, but it is learnt that the club are considering playing in the A1 Semi-Pro League.
Then there are clubs like Kedah and Kelantan, who are beleaguered by salary arrears, thus jeopardising their chances of getting a national licence.
Acting chief executive officer of MFL Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd said they have to wait till today (until 11.59 pm) to know the number of applicants for the national licence.
'As of now, most clubs have applied for the national licence, including two from the A1 Semi-Pro League (champions Melaka and runners-up Immigration).'
Meanwhile, Johor Darul Ta'zim, Selangor, Sabah and Penang have attained their AFC licences to compete in next season's Asian and Asean competitions.

Olusegun's still blazing – veteran striker's vintage display lifts Red Warriors
On fire: Kelantan captain Ifedayo Olusegun celebrating after scoring against Kuala Lumpur at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium. — Bernama PETALING JAYA: Kelantan captain Ifedayo Olusegun rolled back the years with a classic poacher's display by scoring twice in the first 15 minutes to lead the Red Warriors to a 3-1 win over Kuala Lumpur in the FA Cup round-of-16 first-leg tie at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium on Monday. The Nigerian, fondly known as Dayo and who now holds Bahraini citizenship, struck in the fourth minute after pouncing on a wayward back pass from KL's Ukrainian defender Dimitro Lytvyn and slotting past goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad. Olusegun doubled his tally soon after, reacting quickest to Kammeraad's spill from T. Saravanan's volley to stab home from close range. Sean Selvaraj added Kelantan's third just after the hour mark before substitute Syamer Kutty Abba volleyed home a late lifeline for KL. For Olusegun, whose career in Malaysia has seen him feature for Felda United, Selangor, Melaka, Kedah and Police, the win was about more than just his goals. 'It's not just about my goals. It's about the improvement we've made as a team. Defensively, in midfield, going forward – there's more stability now compared to our first match against Kuching. That's why we could punish Kuala Lumpur,' said the 34-year-old attacker. Olusegun, the Super League's top scorer in 2020 and 2021 and third on the all-time chart with 90 goals, emphasised the importance of team chemistry in Kelantan's resurgence. 'The harmony in the squad is very good. We've only been together a few weeks but the dressing room is positive. 'The boys are really bonding, speaking with each other, working things out. It's a big family we are building here and that's important for us.' He admitted Kelantan's poor start to the Super League season, including a 0-4 thrashing by Kuching City, had been a test but one the players had embraced. 'Although we didn't start well, it hasn't broken our spirit. We are getting better each week. As captain, I don't have to do much to keep the team together – the players are already supporting each other. It's getting better and today's result shows that.' Looking ahead, Olusegun urged caution even as Kelantan take a two-goal cushion into the second leg. 'It's still too early to dream about titles or top-three finishes,' he stressed. 'Right now, it's about finding balance and building a proper team. Maybe later in the season we'll see how far we can go – maybe top four, top five, maybe even a cup final. But today, it's about improving game by game.' He also acknowledged the challenge of Kelantan's upcoming fixtures. 'Sabah, for example, are one of the best teams in the league these past two, three seasons. We respect that. We just want to be at our best and see where we can go. The important thing is to keep improving our tactical chemistry.'

Key milestones of Malaysia as Asean Chair
Malaysia's chairmanship of Asean this year has delivered key milestones that reinforce the bloc's role as a credible and principled platform in navigating regional challenges, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Foreign Minister said the upcoming Asean Summit in October, alongside the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit, would further elevate Malaysia's profile as a respected hub for diplomacy and dialogue. 'With only four months left before the end of our chairmanship, Malaysia remains committed to sustaining this positive momentum, particularly in ensuring the success of the 47th Asean Summit and related meetings,' he told Dewan Rakyat yesterday. Mohamad said Malaysia's achievements as chair included the launch of the Asean Community Vision 2045, the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration and the historic admission of Timor-Leste as the bloc's 11th member. Under Malaysia's leadership, he said Asean also maintained the Five-Point Consensus as the main framework for addressing the Myanmar crisis, while pushing for an extended ceasefire and engaging with all stakeholders to support peace efforts. He added that Malaysia spearheaded humanitarian missions to Myanmar following the recent earthquake, secured wider international participation in the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), and advanced Asean's economic integration through agreements such as the upgraded Asean Trade in Goods Agreement and the Asean Digital Economy Framework. Apart from that, Mohamad said Cyprus is expected to sign the TAC during the upcoming summit, following Algeria and Uruguay's accession which brought the total signatories to 57. Mohamad also highlighted Malaysia's efforts in coordinating the establishment of an Interim Observer Team, comprising defence advisers from Asean member states, to monitor compliance with the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. He stressed that this role underscored Malaysia's credibility as a neutral and trusted mediator in regional conflicts.
