NBA draft shifts Cooper Flagg's biggest ROY threats
Flagg opened as the -400 ROY favorite by BetMGM, although those odds were trimmed to -225 with the No. 1 overall pick going to a Dallas Mavericks team that doesn't necessarily need him to be a standout star as a rookie.
Flagg has drawn the second most ROY bets at 13.0 percent and money at 13.6 percent, but he is not among the book's three biggest liabilities.
The top honor there goes to Dylan Harper, who was selected second overall by the San Antonio Spurs. He leads all players in being backed by 21.7 percent of the tickets and 29.8 percent of the action. However, like Flagg, Harper steps into a situation where he has established star teammates in Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox.
That's the main reason behind Harper having only the fourth shortest ROY odds at +1100 at BetMGM. He is behind Flagg, Tre Johnson (+700) and Ace Bailey (+800). Johnson, a bucket-filler from Texas, will have an opportunity to be a primary scoring option with the Washington Wizards, who selected him sixth overall. Bailey, picked fifth overall, landed with a Utah team in desperate need of a young star who can contribute immediately.
The Jazz also selected former Florida star Walter Clayton Jr. with the 18th overall pick. Despite not being viewed as a particularly strong ballhandler, Clayton was the book's second biggest liability for ROY honors as a +10000 longshot, prompting his odds to fall to +6600.
No. 3 in terms of BetMGM's biggest liabilities was former Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears, who moved from +4000 to +3500 after being selected seventh overall by the New Orleans Pelicans.
The same top four candidates lead the board at DraftKings, but in a different order. Following Flagg (-185) is Harper (+900), Bailey (+950) and Johnson (+1000).
DraftKings is also offering a slew of Flagg-specific props, including separate Over/Under markets on averaging 16.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game during the regular season. DraftKings is also offering a parlay at +285 odds that Flagg will average at least 18 points and six rebounds per game.
Frisky bettors can choose a three-way parlay at +6500 that adds the Mavericks winning the Southwest Division.
Following the draft, Dallas was being offered at +1500 to win the division, +2500 to win the Western Conference and +4000 to win the 2025-26 NBA title.

Houston Rockets' Striking Trade Slammed for Poor Optics
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Houston Rockets shook the NBA landscape this offseason by swinging a blockbuster trade to acquire Kevin Durant, putting them at the forefront of championship contention. However, they also made another trade that isn't exactly getting rave reviews. A couple of weeks after landing Durant, the Rockets sent forward Cam Whitmore to the New Orleans Pelicans in a three-team deal that resulted in Houston receiving a couple of second-round draft picks, one of which won't even manifest until 2029. More news: Chicago Bulls Urged to Make No-Brainer Trade Involving Star Player Not exactly an enviable return. Bleacher Report's Dan Favale absolutely hates the trade, dubbing it one of the worst moves of the NBA offseason. "Cam Whitmore saw his role diminish as a sophomore and had no conceivable path to more playing time next season," Favale wrote. "His trade value this time next year likely would have been lower. Understanding and defending the Rockets' process doesn't change the potential long-term optics. Whitmore has real multi-level scoring ability." SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - MAY 02: Head Coach Ime Udoka of the Houston Rockets reacts against the Golden State Warriors during the fourth quarter in Game Six of the Western Conference First Round NBA Playoffs at Chase Center on May 02, 2025 in San Francisco, California. More Photo byWhitmore averaged 9.4 points and three rebounds over 16.2 minutes per game on 44.4/35.5/75.0 shooting splits last year. That followed a rookie campaign in which he logged 12.3 points and 3.8 rebounds across 18.7 minutes a night while shooting 45.4 percent from the floor, 35.9 percent from three-point range and 67.9 percent from the free-throw line. More news: Pistons Linked to Monster Trade That Could Swing NBA Championship Still just 21 years old, Whitmore is oozing with potential and could absolutely serve as a crucial piece in any team's rebuild. But that's just it: the Rockets aren't rebuilding anymore, and Whitmore's role would have been especially muddied with Durant now in the fold. Suddenly, Houston is a legitimate title contender, even in the stacked Western Conference. Unfortunately, Whitmore just wouldn't have fit. Not only did the Rockets acquire Durant, but they also brought in Dorian Finney-Smith, indicating that the team is moving more toward veterans rather than developmental talents. We'll see if Whitmore makes Houston regret this trade, much like Favale anticipates. For more on the Houston Rockets and general NBA news, head on over to Newsweek Sports.

Mavericks' Cooper Flagg ranked among the top small forwards for 2025-26 season
After debuting last month in the NBA Summer League, Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg is projected to be among the top small forwards for the 2025-26 season. Flagg logged two appearances with the Mavericks, averaging 20.5 points, five rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals on 35.7% shooting from the field. He produced 31 points and four rebounds in his final appearance on July 12 against the San Antonio Spurs. The No. 1 pick logged 62 minutes in the desert, showcasing each element of his game that made him so highly touted out of Duke. He has everything needed to help the Mavericks now, a key reason why HoopsHype ranked him 20th on its list of top small forwards for next season. Flagg has fantastic size and length (he measured in at 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot wingspan at the NBA Draft Combine), the skill to handle the ball and knock down tough shots from all three levels, great athleticism and, maybe most importantly, elite competitiveness, which should help him make a huge impact on the defensive end, possibly as early as in his rookie season. Flagg is viewed as a generational prospect on the court and enters next season with tremendous hype as the front-runner to win Rookie of the Year. He is projected to play a key role as a first-year player, and the Mavericks are eager to see him take the court. Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said the team is going to ask a lot of him during the upcoming season to maximize his development. They will experiment with him playing on and off the ball to ensure he can impact games in various ways. Kidd believes Flagg landed in a good situation with the Mavericks, given their mixture of veterans and young players. The organization is hopeful that Flagg can have a smooth transition to the NBA and help the team make another deep playoff run.
