The return of Mr Darcy
Austen's staying power, however, runs deeper than costume drama and clever repartee. Her genius lies in dissecting how people perform identity — through class, courtship, marriage and conversation — and how frequently they misjudge one another in the process. The charming narcissist, the ambitious social climber, the well-meaning sibling who cannot keep a secret, the distant father, remain familiar tropes. If anything, in a modern retelling, Lizzie Bennet might host a podcast on dating red flags, and unpack her romantic patterns in therapy. Austen's world is specific, but her insights remain universal, which is why her stories keep finding new forms, and new audiences.
Still, the proliferation of adaptations does invite scepticism. At a time when new voices struggle to break through, the constant tilling of old soil can feel like creative fatigue masquerading as homage. Does the industry's fixation on Austen reflect a reluctance to move beyond the literary canon or are her themes — pride, perception, emotional cluelessness — simply more resonant than ever? After all, whether in bonnets or bustiers, misreading the room is as much hardwired into modern DNA as it was in the 19th century. Two centuries on, Austen still sees young people — and yes, she's still smirking.

Sofia Carson called 'dreadful actress' for her 'bad acting' in Netflix's My Oxford Year: 'Even Corey Mylchreest couldn't save it'
After Millie Bobby Brown, Sofia Carson may be Netflix's new favourite girlie, but the internet isn't exactly cheering her on. The singer-actor, who led The Life List, one of Netflix's biggest hits this year, is back with another high-profile project: My Oxford Year. Starring opposite Queen Charlotte's Corey Mylchreest (aka Farmer George), the film had all the makings of a breakout romance and is currently sitting at #1 in multiple countries. But despite the hype, many viewers aren't sold on Sofia Carson's acting. What is My Oxford Year about? My Oxford Year follows Anna De Le VAGA (Sofia Carson), an ambitious American who heads to Oxford to study poetry before starting a prestigious finance job in New York. There, she meets Jamie Davenport (Corey Mylchreest), a witty teaching assistant, and the two fall for each other despite starting off on the wrong foot. Just as their romance deepens, Anna discovers Jamie is terminally ill and has chosen to stop treatment. What begins as a classic academic romance turns into an emotional journey about love, loss, and finding meaning beyond ambition. The film, based on Julia Whelan's novel of the same name, blends charm and tragedy, leaving viewers heartbroken. Fans are slamming Sofia Carson's 'bad acting' online My Oxford Year centres entirely around Anna's journey, placing much of the spotlight on Sofia Carson. As the emotional anchor of the film, Carson was meant to carry the weight of the story, but many viewers felt her performance fell flat. Critics and fans alike pointed out that her emotional scenes lacked depth, making it harder for the audience to fully connect with the character. Combined with what some called a weak script, her portrayal may have softened the overall impact the film was aiming for. One user wrote, "Watching my Oxford year solidified my opinion that Sofia Carson is a dreadful actress; my goodness, was that shit." watching my oxford year solidified my opinion that sophia carson is a dreadful actress, my goodness was that shit. "Watching my oxford year, and it's truly incredible how Sofia Carson's superpower is making every movie she's in genuine trash. Not even corey could save it," a second disappointed user added. watching my oxford year, and it's truly incredible how sofia carson's superpower is making every movie she's in genuine trash. not even corey could save it. One user bluntly criticised the actress, writing, "Sofia Carson needs to start taking serious acting classes. I don't know how to describe it, but iykyk." Sofia Carson needs to start taking serious acting classes. My Oxford Year did not hit me as hard as it should have bcuz her acting kept annoying me.
