Trump, Bond Market, and Uncertainty in US Economy

Saba Yemena day ago
Sana'a – Saba:
Treasury bonds pose a serious challenge to the US economy, given the increasing deficit ratios in the face of public debt, this can be clearly seen in the fluctuations in Treasury bond prices there.
Uncertainty
Here, we must ask what are the reasons behind the fluctuations in Treasury bond prices that the United States is experiencing? Journalist and economic analyst Rashid Al-Haddad told the Yemeni News Agency (Saba): The most important reasons behind the fluctuations in the US Treasury bond market are the loss of confidence of investors in US bonds in the stability of economic policies under US President Donald Trump. Trump has taken a number of economic measures, most notably the tariff war, which led to the collapse of US stock markets and also affected the bond market, due to its negative repercussions on US and global markets. This resulted in widespread trade disruptions and raised investor fears of a return to the Great Recession in America, especially since the effects of the tariffs were evident on American consumers, but, contrary to expectations, they did not have a positive impact on the performance of the US economy.
In addition to Trump's move to lower interest rates to less than 5%, another factor is the anticipation of American and foreign investors, whether countries or companies. Approximately $11 trillion, representing one-third of the US public debt, is due to mature in the coming period, amid the uncertainty facing the US economy under Trump.
Maturity Debt
A report by the US Treasury Department showed that the national debt has exceeded $36.22 trillion, and that the government needs to refinance to repay $11 trillion in maturing debt, nearly a third of the total, over the next 12 months. Here's the question: How challenging is this given the volatility in bond markets and rising yields?
Journalist Al-Haddad explains: "So far, indications indicate that the Trump administration is unable to repay, and the options available to address this are economically costly. The Trump administration may resort to repurchasing maturing bonds at higher interest rates or negotiating with bondholders."
Banks
Central banks' holdings of US Treasury bonds decreased by $17 billion last week, and by $48 billion since late March 2025. What are the reasons and implications behind this?
Al-Haddad believes that "the decline in banks' holdings stems from concerns over rising political and financial risks, which reinforces the feeling that US bonds are no longer the safe haven for investment they were in years, and that risk levels have become high. Consequently, banks are turning to diversifying their sovereign investments or increasing their gold reserves as a safe haven."
Auction
The $16 billion auction of 20-year US Treasury bonds with a yield of 5% is experiencing weak demand, reflecting a reluctance by foreign investors to purchase US bonds. What could this mean if it continues?
Rasheed says the Trump administration may resort to this, especially since the outstanding bonds are decades old, and most of them were sold to raise funds for US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, for example.
Currencies
The decline in the value of the dollar index against a basket of major currencies and the rise in US debt to approximately $37 trillion are putting upward pressure on interest rates on US bonds.
Al-Haddad says that the decline in demand for the dollar ahead of any interest rate cut indicates a loss of investor confidence in the dollar and a shift towards gold. This also confirms that the risks of the repercussions of the interest rate cut will also be significant for the dollar price.
In addition, Saudi Arabia increased its holdings of US Treasury bonds to $2.2 billion in April 2025.
Al-Haddad believes this percentage is small: Saudi Arabia has recently reduced its investment in US bonds, unlike in previous years, and even if Saudi Arabia's new investments in bonds are small compared to other countries.

PM launches school bag project for children of martyrs, missing persons

Sana'a - Saba: Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi on Wednesday launched the school bag project for the children of martyrs and missing persons in the capital Sana'a and various governorates. This annual initiative is implemented by the General Authority for the Care of Martyrs' Families. During the inauguration, the Prime Minister emphasized that this project is a yearly commitment and duty to those who sacrificed their lives defending the nation's land, honor, and sovereignty. He stated, "Today, we live in an atmosphere of freedom and dignity thanks to the sacrifices of the righteous martyrs who watered the soil of the homeland with their blood in defense of its security, sovereignty, and independence." Al-Rahawi highlighted that the martyrs' sacrifices have brought dignity, honor, stability, and freedom. He affirmed that, thanks to the leadership of Sayyed Abdulmalik Badr al-Din al-Houthi and the Supreme Political Council, Yemen is moving "from victory to victory" and fulfilling its brotherly, religious, and moral duty to support the oppressed in Gaza. The Prime Minister asserted that threats from the Zionist enemy will only strengthen Yemen's resolve to support its brethren in Gaza, calling it an irreversible commitment. He added that the Yemeni people, armed forces, and security are at a high state of readiness to defend the nation, its freedom, and its cause, regardless of the arrogance of the American and European-backed Zionist enemy. Al-Rahawi also acknowledged the steadfastness of Palestinian resistance fighters for over 630 days against immense NATO-backed firepower, noting their success in destroying enemy vehicles and killing thousands of soldiers since Operation al-Aqsa Flood. He concluded by reaffirming the Government of Change and Construction's increased attention and care for the families of martyrs and missing persons, expressing confidence that their children will excel in knowledge and science, just as their parents excelled in confronting enemies. He wished the Authority for the Care of Martyrs' Families continued success in their endeavors. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print more of (Local)

Euro-Mediterranean HR monitor: 85% of Gaza Strip under Israeli control

Geneva – Saba: The Geneva-based Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor accused Israeli entity on Wednesday of continuing to commit the crime of forced displacement against the population of the Gaza Strip, as part of a declared and systematic policy aimed at emptying the Strip of its indigenous population. The monitor said in a statement that Israeli entity is using multiple tools to achieve this goal, including widespread bombing, bulldozing, starvation, destruction of infrastructure, forced expulsion by military force, and forced eviction orders. It stated that Israeli entity has transformed most of the Gaza Strip into devastated and uninhabitable lands, forcing hundreds of thousands of residents to forcibly regroup in a small area of no more than 15% of the Strip's area, in preparation for mass displacement outside Gaza. This is a direct extension of the genocide committed against Palestinians for nearly 21 months, according to Quds Press Agency. The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor revealed that between June 28 and 30, Israeli forces issued three new military evacuation orders covering large areas east and south of Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip, displacing tens of thousands of civilians without any safe haven or possibility of return. The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor noted that these orders bring the number of evacuation orders issued by Israel since March 18, the date on which it reneged on the temporary ceasefire agreement, to 51. Some are new orders, others are renewals of previous orders, amid ongoing military escalation. It explained that more than 85% of the Gaza Strip is now under direct military control or subject to forced displacement orders, effectively systematically erasing the Palestinian presence on the ground and a blatant attempt to effect permanent demographic change. The Observatory reported that displacement orders since last March have displaced at least one million Palestinians, many of whom were forced to flee to destroyed or open areas or to the streets, amid a lack of food, water, and services, and amidst the spread of disease, under extremely harsh humanitarian conditions. The Observatory noted that Israeli enemy forces are not content with expelling residents, but are systematically destroying the neighborhoods they are displacing through aerial bombardment, explosive robot bombing, and demolition and bulldozing, in one of the largest campaigns of urban and residential destruction in modern times. It confirmed that Israeli bombardment even targets areas to which civilians have been forced to flee, including tents, schools, and shelters. On Tuesday, July 1, five civilians, including a woman and two children, were killed when their tents were targeted in al-Mawasi area west of Khan Yunis, despite it being one of the areas to which the enemy had previously directed displaced persons. With American and European support, the Israeli enemy army has continued to commit genocidal crimes in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, resulting in the martyrdom of 57,012 Palestinian citizens, the majority of whom were children and women, and the injury of 134,592 others. To date, this is a preliminary toll, with thousands of victims still buried under the rubble and on the streets, unable to be reached by ambulances and rescue teams. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print
