David Benavidez set to defend WBC light heavyweight title against Anthony Yarde in November
Benavidez is scheduled to make the first defense of his WBC light heavyweight title against Anthony Yarde on a Riyadh Season card in November, Turki Alalshikh confirmed Thursday.

"The Monster" was in advanced negotiations for a fight with WBO interim champion Callum Smith, but those talks ultimately failed, and so a deal with Yarde was finalized instead. While Yarde is in the top 10 at 175 pounds, a fight between Benavidez and Smith would've seen the consensus Nos. 3 and 4 fighters in the division pitted against each other.
Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) twice held the WBC super middleweight title between 2017-20, but lost it outside the ring on both occasions. In 2023, Benavidez proved himself to be a formidable challenger for undisputed champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez by beating Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade. But with Alvarez uninterested in facing Benavidez, the latter was forced to move up to light heavyweight.
After picking up the WBC interim title against Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June 2024, Benavidez had to get off the floor to defeat the WBA (Regular) champion David Morrell in a thriller in February. Now that Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol are expected to fight for a third time, Benavidez has to once again wait his turn.
With Benavidez's next fight scheduled for a Riyadh Season show, which hosted the two Beterbiev-Bivol fights, the chances of seeing the winner of the trilogy face Benavidez have increased substantially.

Yarde (27-3, 24 KOs) is a former two-time light heavyweight title challenger. The Brit was stopped in both championship attempts: by Sergey Kovalev in 2019 and by Beterbiev in 2023. Yarde was last in action when he edged Lyndon Arthur to lead their rivalry, 2-1.
Alalshikh announced Sunday that Brian Norman Jr. would defend his WBO welterweight title against two-division world champion Devin Haney on a Riyadh Season card in November. Both Benavidez vs. Yarde and Haney vs. Norman are expected to take place on the same card.

Manny Pacquiao Fight Result: Boxing's Historic Bid Falls Short In Controversial Decision
Manny Pacquiao Fight Result: Boxing's Historic Bid Falls Short In Controversial Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Pacquiao narrowly missed the chance to break his own record as the oldest welterweight champion in history, a feat he first achieved in 2019 at age 40 by defeating Keith Thurman. A win would have extended that milestone to 46, placing him alongside George Foreman and Bernard Hopkins as the only fighters to win world titles at such an advanced age. The Filipino icon also came agonizingly close to becoming the first boxer to win a major world title after being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, a distinction that would have further cemented his legacy. After the result, Pacquiao said in his in-ring interview, "I thought I won the fight. I mean, it was a close fight." Despite the draw, Pacquiao defied expectations with a spirited performance, silencing critics who questioned his ability to compete after such a long layoff. He started strong, landing sharp combinations in the middle to late rounds. The crowd, heavily biased in Pacquiao's favor, erupted with every flurry, but Barrios' size and youth gradually became factors as the fight progressed. The champion's reach and disciplined jab disrupted Pacquiao's rhythm in the early rounds, and sharp combinations in the final rounds swayed the judges. Despite having success, Barrios was timid in approaching Pacquiao throughout the fight. 'It was crazy. His stamina. He could still crack,' Barrios admitted. 'He's still strong as hell.' Pacquiao's higher punch output and crowd-pleasing aggression contrasted with Barrios' more measured, technical approach. Pacquiao's return was fueled by a desire to make history and reclaim the glory of his prime years. Earlier in June, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, a testament to a career that includes 12 world titles across eight weight classes, a record unmatched in boxing history. Manny Pacquiao Pulls Off What No One Expected Despite Age and Draw Result
Manny Pacquiao Pulls Off What No One Expected Despite Age and Draw Result originally appeared on Athlon Sports. At 46 years old, Manny Pacquiao has once again proven that his legacy in boxing is far from over. This past month, he made his highly anticipated comeback to the ring and fought to a majority draw against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios. Now, the Filipino icon was recently entered into Ring Magazine's latest welterweight rankings, coming in listed at no. 9 in the division. The ranking is a significant milestone for Pacquiao, who returned to the ring after a four-year hiatus and nearly dethroned a champion 16 years younger than him. His performance, which had flashes of his vintage speed and precision, convinced Ring Magazine that he still belongs among the elite at 147 pounds, and was impressive enough to earn recognition despite the draw result. Shortly after his bout, Pacquiao believed he won the fight, telling BoxingScene, 'For the 11th and 12th [rounds], I'm okay with them giving those to Barrios because, in my mind, I was thinking, 'Even if they give him these two rounds, I did enough in the others [to win].'' 'PacMan' still took the loss with dignity, saying, 'I was surprised by the decision. But I am in sports. The first thing you learn in sports is sportsmanship.' Barrios, who retained his WBC title, is ranked just one place above Pacquiao at no. 8 in Ring Magazine's rankings. A rematch between him and Pacquiao remains a strong possibility, especially now that Pacquiao has regained his foothold in the rankings. Even in the post-retirement comeback arc of his career, Pacquiao has already defied expectations by proving he can still at least compete at the highest level.
