Cannes: Karan Johar recalls his first film, Shah Rukh and Aishwarya at fest
He spoke about visiting the Cannes Film Festival for the first time with his father Yash Johar, and how they made a start at the prestigious film festival with their film 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' which was sold for $5,000 at the Cannes Film Market.
Karan, whose production 'Homebound' has been selected in the Un Certain Regard segment at Cannes, said, "I have a lot of emotional memories related to Cannes. I remember the year 2002, when my father and I were here at the Cannes market'.
KJo remembered his father striking a deal, which he thought at that time was quite less. "I told him, 'This seems like it's really not of any consequence'. Because I remember he sold the European rights of 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' for $5,000. And at that time, I was like, '$5,000, isn't that very little?'

And he said, 'Look, it's a start, we have to see it'. And unfortunately, he wasn't alive to see the massive impact that our cinema, that began from 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' went on to all of Shah Rukh Khan's movies," he shared.
KJo further mentioned that the move created a huge cultural movement for our cinema in Europe. He said, "I remember it began in the year 2002, it was also the year that 'Devdas' had a beautiful screening, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Shah Rukh were on the red carpet. And Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is literally the queen of Cannes. Like, every time she's here, she creates such a huge amount of media energy and excitement. And she's here again. So it's just wonderful that I remember that so clearly."
Bharat Pavilion at Cannes Film Festival saw a series of interesting sessions around cinema today. The Bharat Pavilion has been organised by NFDC and FICCI under the aegis of Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India.
"Then I came back to the capacity of a filmmaker, when we were selected the director's fortnight in 2013, for the anthology, Bombay Talkies, with Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Divakar Banerjee, myself. And it was that particular year that I met Guneet Monga. And, you know, I saw 'The Lunchbox', which was actually doing so phenomenally and getting so much love. And I decided to present the film in Hindi to our audiences in India. And so I have so many beautiful memories," he added.

Spike Lee's new movie is much more than a Kurosawa remake
Decked out in a resplendent orange-and-blue-striped zoot suit symbolizing the colours of his beloved New York Knicks, Spike Lee hit the Cannes Film Festival's red carpet in May in full boogie mode. As Lee and his wife, producer Tonya Lewis Lee, huddled under an umbrella and made their way through a throng of photographers, he started dancing as speakers blasted 'Trunks,' a track from the soundtrack of his new film, 'Highest 2 Lowest,' by ASAP Rocky, who also acts in the movie. Accompanied by his superstar partner, Rihanna, exhibiting her sizable baby bump, the rapper locked eyes with Lee and the two broke out into a spontaneous shimmy. With the exception of the Knicks winning the NBA championship (they would be eliminated from the playoffs a few days later), it would be hard to imagine Lee in a more joyous spirit than the one he was in at that May 19 event. His film 'Do The Right Thing' had premiered at Cannes on the same date in 1989. It was also the 100th birthday of Malcolm X, who was portrayed by 'Highest' actor Denzel Washington in their most successful partnership, 1992's 'Malcolm X.' Though months have passed since that triumphant evening, Lee is extending his 'Highest 2 Lowest' victory lap, delighted that he and Washington, whom he calls 'America's greatest living actor,' have joined forces for a fifth time. 'I've had a love relationship with the Cannes Film Festival since 1986 — they've loved all my films that have been there,' says Lee, 68, speaking on a recent video call from his residence at Oak Bluffs in Martha's Vineyard. 'May 19, 2025, was a continuation of that. I don't think it was a mistake that the world premiere of 'Do the Right Thing' was May 19, 1989. I don't think it was a mistake that May 19, 2025, was Malcolm X's 100th birthday. 'For me, some things you just cannot explain. They just happen. And to add to that, this is the first time Denzel has ever been to Cannes with a film.' A reimagining of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 thriller 'High and Low,' 'Highest 2 Lowest' stars Washington as a wealthy music mogul whose livelihood is threatened by a life-or-death ransom demand. The idea for an updated 'High and Low' has circulated around Hollywood for several years, sparking interest from David Mamet and Chris Rock, among others. Playwright Alan Fox's New York-set script was sent to Lee by Washington, who was convinced he was the only director who could do it justice. 'He didn't have to ask me twice,' cracks Lee. Seated in front of a Kehinde Wiley painting and within reach of a 'Jaws 50th' T-shirt, Lee, who wore a Knicks cap, is relentlessly jubilant, flavoring his comments with humorous exclamations and explosive laughter while declaring 'Highest 2 Lowest' as one of the most deeply felt endeavors of his decades-long career. The passage of time since he and Washington worked together stunned them both. 'Denzel and I didn't realize that it's been 18 years since 'Inside Man,'' he says. 'We only found out when journalists told us.' 'Highest' is also his first film shot and set in New York in more than a decade. The action moves from Brooklyn to the South Bronx. A key set piece involving a subway chase (an homage to 'The French Connection' and the late Gene Hackman, Lee says) is a kinetic mash-up, switching between the pursuit, rowdy Yankee fans traveling to a day game against the 'the hated motherf—ing Boston Red Sox' and a boisterous National Puerto Rican Day celebration in the Bronx featuring Rosie Perez, Anthony Ramos and Eddie Palmieri's Salsa Orchestra. Netflix MENA releases Jordanian film ‘Inshallah a Boy'
Co-written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Amjad Al Rasheed, the film is a co-production between Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Netflix has released Jordanian film Inshallah a Boy, directed by Amjad Al Rasheed. The film follows the story of Nawal, a widow fighting to protect her home and rights after her husband's sudden death. Directed by Amjad Al-Rasheed and co-written with Delphine Agut and Rula Nasser, the film features Mouna Hawa, Haitham Omari, Salwa Nakkara, Yumna Marwan, Mohammad Al-Jizawi, Islam Al-Awadi and Celina Rabab'a. Inshallah a Boy has garnered widespread acclaim, including winning the Gan Foundation Award and the Rail d'Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Lead actress Mouna Hawa also won Best Actress at both the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and the Red Sea International Film Festival. Earlier this year, the film had a successful run in French cinemas and recently enjoyed two sold-out screenings at the Amman International Film Festival, where it took home the Audience Award. Inshallah a Boy made history last year at the Cannes Film Festival as the first Jordanian feature to participate in the Critics' Week section, securing the Gan Foundation Award and the Rail D'Or for Best Feature Film. Since then, it has screened at over 100 film festivals and won more than 25 awards during its festival tour. In terms of production companies, Inshallah a Boy was produced by Imaginarium Films and co-produced by Georges Films and Bayt Al-Shawareb. For distribution within the Arab world, MAD Solutions and Lagoonie Film Production have taken the helm, while Pyramide International is managing international sales and distribution in France. The film's production was led by Nasser and Abu Ayyash, with co-production from Youssef Abdelnabi, Raphaël Alexandre, and Nicolas Leprêtre. Associate producers include Alaa Karkouti, Maher Diab, and Shahinaz El-Akkad. The lensing of the film was executed by Kanamé Onoyama, while editing was handled by the prolific Ahmed Hafez. Nour Halawani was responsible for sound mixing, and the score was composed by Jerry Lane. Zeina Soufan and Nasser Zoubi served as the project's costume and production designers, respectively. Inshallah a Boy marks Amjad Al-Rasheed's second collaboration with MAD Solutions, following the marketing of his short film The Parrot, which he co-directed. The film narrates the story of Nawal, a recently widowed woman navigating societal challenges to save her daughter and home after her husband's death in a society where having a son holds significant weight.
