Asked to prove citizenship by Pune police, mob: Kargil veteran's family

Representative image PUNE: A Kargil war veteran's family in Pune has alleged they were forced to prove their Indian citizenship after a group of 30 to 40 men accompanied by police stormed their home late Saturday night. The family of Hakimuddin Shaikh, a retired soldier who fought in the 1999 Kargil war, alleged Tuesday the men arrived at their home in eastern Pune's Chandan Nagar & demanded documents. By midnight, male family members were taken to the police station. "We were told to wait until 3am and warned that if we failed to prove our citizenship, we would be declared Bangladeshi or Rohingya," a family member alleged. DCP Somay Munde said police acted on information about suspected illegal immigrants. "Our team asked for documents. Once it was clear they were Indian, we let them go. The police team was not accompanied by any third party. We have video footage." Hakimuddin, 58, served 16 years in the Army's 269 Engineer Regiment from 1984 to 2000. "I fought for this country in Kargil," he said. "My entire family belongs to this nation. Why are we being asked to prove it?" The family, originally from Pratapgarh in UP, has lived in Pune since 1960. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Up to 70% off | Shop Sale Libas Undo Though Hakimuddin returned to his hometown in 2013, his brothers, nephews, and their families remain in Pune. Hakimuddin's brother Irshad Shaikh said: "A group of unknown men, shouting slogans and kicking doors, were demanding papers. A plainclothes officer tried to calm them. A police van waited down the road." The family includes two other Army veterans - Shaikh Naeemuddin and Shaikh Mohammad Salim, who served in the 1965 and 1971 wars. "Is this how soldiers' families are treated?" Irshad asked. "What does being Indian mean if we have to prove it every time someone knocks at the door?" The group allegedly refused to accept even valid documents. Even after showing Aadhaar cards, Hakimuddin's nephews Naushad and Nawab Shaikh said the group mocked the documents as fake. "They were acting like goons," Naushad alleged. "They kicked the door, shouted at the women, told them to wake up and show papers." Another nephew Shamshad Shaikh alleged police summoned them again Sunday. "We waited over two hours before being told the inspector wasn't coming. Our documents are still with them." Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said that the case is being investigated. "If negligence is found, action will follow. Preliminary findings suggest police did not forcibly enter the house."

Civic woes dominate Chandigarh MC house meeting, commissioner orders action against negligent officers

1 2 3 4 Chandigarh: Blocked and broken sewage pipelines, poor sanitation, inadequate water supply, and non-functioning streetlights marred the monthly general house meeting on Tuesday. Councillors from all political parties raised public grievances, saying that in some areas, the engineering officers concerned failed to act even after the issues were brought to their attention. This drew a sharp response from municipal commissioner Amit Kumar, who instructed officers to immediately act on emergency works, citing that finances had already been earmarked for such services. He also directed the chief engineer to identify the engineering officers concerned and take action against them for showing negligence in addressing emergency services like sewage blockages and water supply issues. BJP councillor Kanwar Rana highlighted that sewage in his ward had been blocked for several days, and employees were on strike due to unpaid salaries. "The residents are living in unbearable conditions, and sewage has entered their homes. Despite informing the concerned officers, no action has been taken. Who is responsible?" he asked. AAP councillor Damanpreet Singh raised the issue of damaged and blocked sewage lines in his ward, stating that the old lines had caved in and required immediate repairs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses In Mataiwoi Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo BJP councillor Kuljeet Singh said sewage had been blocked in his area for many days, and no action had been taken despite informing the engineering department's field officers. BJP's Saurabh Joshi echoed similar concerns, pointing out that water accumulates at the roundabout in his ward. Congress councillor Gurpreet Singh slammed mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, saying that while she celebrates Swachh Survekshan, the ground reality is different. He said around 30% of the city's streetlights are non-functional or broken, leaving large parts of the city in darkness. He also pointed out that CESL (Convergence Energy Services Limited) has not been operational for the past year, forcing junior engineers (JEs) and sub-divisional officers (SDOs) to manage the situation alone while the mayor and administration remain silent spectators. Singh also raised the issue of sewerage and sanitation workers, who have been on strike for the past six days due to non-payment of wages. "These workers are struggling to put food on the table and pay their children's school fee. It is shameful that such strikes occur nearly every three months," he said. AAP councillor Suman Devi raised the issue of poor water supply in her Manimajra ward, where the 24x7 water supply project was initiated. She said the situation has worsened to the point that water doesn't come even during supply hours, and residents are now dependent on tankers. Commissioner's Directive While replying to the municipal councillor, municipal commissioner Amit Kumar said that engineering officers will be identified, and action will be taken against them for not dealing with emergency work, despite being asked to act promptly for emergency services. The commissioner asked the chief engineer to identify, fix responsibility, and take suitable action against such engineering officers for not dealing with emergency works. In the coming days, the hot-spot areas in the city will be identified to improve the situation there. Mayor Faces Protest Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla received major criticism as AAP councillor Prem Lata came in well on the issue of sanitation. Carrying a placard, Prem Lata criticised the mayor for poor sanitation conditions in the city. Besides that, both the senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor raised the issue of the dry waste plant, saying that processing is not happening properly.
