Joe Root will have nightmares about Josh Hazlewood before Ashes tour: David Warner
Former Australian opener David Warner hasn't backed down from his pointed remarks about star batter Joe Root, once again highlighting the England batter's struggles in Australia. Never one to shy away from stirring the pot ahead of a big series, Warner believes Root will again find the going tough against Josh Hazlewood in the upcoming Ashes, set to be played Down Under later this week, Warner raised eyebrows with his "surfboard" jibe aimed at Root's front pad technique, implying that Hazlewood has often exploited that vulnerability. "The big anchor there is Rooty, who is yet to score a hundred in Australia. Josh Hazlewood tends to have his number quite a lot. He'll have to take the surfboard off his front leg," Warner told BBC one of the world's premier Test batters, Root has been dismissed by Hazlewood ten times in the longest format - a tally only exceeded by Pat Cummins and India's Jasprit Bumrah, who have dismissed him 11 times each. However, only three of Hazlewood's dismissals have come via LBW - a point Root's former teammate Stuart Broad was quick to highlight. "I've never heard England's best-ever batter's front pad called a surfboard. Just for clarity. Hazlewood has got Rooty LBW in Test cricket three times. Three," Broad posted on X, defending his long-time and Broad recently crossed paths during The Hundred - Warner representing London Spirit and Broad donning the commentator's hat. Speaking to reporters after a match, Warner doubled down on his comments, claiming Australia have long identified Root's front pad as a weakness. "That's where we always targeted him," he left-hander even drew a parallel between Root's troubles against Hazlewood and his own well-documented struggles against Broad, who dismissed him 17 times in Tests. "I think he will have nightmares before he gets over there about Josh Hazlewood. A bit like me and Broady," Warner Root's credit, he has transformed his Test career in the post-Covid era, scoring centuries at a brisk pace. He is now just one ton away from the elite 40-century club. In the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, he racked up 537 runs in nine innings, becoming the second-highest run-getter in Test history in the process. Warner acknowledged Root's class but couldn't resist one final dig. "Joe is a hell of a cricket player. But I'm sure he'd like to score a hundred in Australia. It's one that has eluded him," he remarked.- EndsMust Watch

Gary Bettman and Matthew Tkachuk join Donald Trump's presidential sports council as NHL's diversity promises face backlashn(Image via Getty) Gary Bettman and Matthew Tkachuk have surprised many by agreeing to serve on US president Donald Trump's sports council. On July 30, 2025, the White House in Washington, D.C., announced that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Florida Panthers captain Matthew Tkachuk would advise the president on sports policy. The council will focus on restoring tradition in college athletics and other national sports issues. The move raises questions because the NHL has championed inclusion and diversity. Why would league leaders team up with a group known for opposing policies that protect minority and LGBTQ+ athletes? Fans wonder what this means for hockey's promise of respect and fairness. The report showed NHL staff were about 84 percent white and 93 percent straight. He said, 'Seeing Bettman and Tkachuk join a council targeting marginalized communities is deeply disturbing and a step back for hockey.' Shohei Ohtani Homers For 1,000th MLB Hit In LA Dodgers Defeat
Shohei Ohtani notched the 1,000th hit of his Major League Baseball career in impressive style Wednesday, belting a two-run homer as part of an impressive two-day display that couldn't get the Los Angeles Dodgers past St. Louis. In his starting pitcher's role Ohtani struck out eight and allowed just two infield singles in four dominant innings. And at the plate he notched his milestone homer in the third inning, a two-run blast that put Los Angeles up 2-1. It was his 39th home run of the season, one behind National League Lader Kyle Schwarber and three behind MLB leader Cal Raleigh. The Dodgers couldn't hold on to their early lead, however, the Cardinals rallying for a 5-3 victory at Dodger Stadium. But Ohtani joined newly minted Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui as the only Japanese-born players to reach 1,000 hits in the major leagues. Ichiro finished his career with 3,089 and Matsui with 1,253. Ohtani's performance quelled concern over his previous pitching start, which he departed early due to cramping in his right hip. Having returned to the starting lineup this year after a near two-year absence in the wake of elbow surgery, he pitched four innings for the first time this season.
