The Democrats' 20-Million-Dollar-Man Problem

The Democrats' 20-Million-Dollar-Man Problem

New York Times6 days ago

It's not every day that a stranger cries right in front of you.
But that's what happened to me in 2018. I had been invited to speak at Grove City College, a small Christian college outside Pittsburgh, and a young man picked me up at the airport for the 90-minute drive to the school.
During our conversation, he asked me, 'Do you know who Jordan Peterson is?' I said yes. Peterson's self-help book, '12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos,' which had been released earlier that year, was an enormous best seller. It has sold 10 million copies worldwide.
I'd read the book and liked it. It's not a political tome. It's written to provide meaning and purpose for a generation of young men who too often don't know what to believe or whom to trust.
The book's 'rules' — such as 'make friends with people who want the best for you' and 'compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not who someone else is today' — provide a kind of common-sense road map to living a life of greater meaning and purpose. At its core, it's a self-help book. Think of something like Stephen Covey's 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,' but with far more biblical references.
Peterson 'saved my life,' the man said. He choked up. After he'd finished his enlistment with the Marines, he left the Corps with no job, very few friends and no plan. He descended into depression. But Peterson taught him to find meaning in small accomplishments, in making the next day better than the last, and now he was on his way — he had a job, he was finishing a degree and he was making something of his life.
That young man is not alone. If you dive into the Jordan Peterson universe, especially in the days before the pandemic — before his politics (and manner) became more bizarre and conspiratorial — you'll hear countless stories like that.

Sacramento stalls on enforcing daylighting law aimed at improving pedestrians safety

SACRAMENTO — A California law aimed at pedestrian safety now bans cars from parking 20 feet from intersections. The law allows cities to issue fines to violators, but the City of Sacramento has not issued those fines even in the face of what some have called a pedestrian safety crisis. Slow Down Sacramento founder Isaac Gonzalez is calling on the city to speed up its conversion of city streets to follow state law. "We really shouldn't wait until people get hurt before we actually act and follow state law," Gonzalez said. "I think, unfortunately, in the city, we get decision paralysis. Where do we start? The problem is so huge." The so-called daylighting law requires all California cities to create 20 feet of space on the approaching side of intersections to prevent collisions. A City of Sacramento spokesperson confirmed that the city has not removed all meters, has not started red striping all the intersections, and is still working to identify how many spots need to be removed. Asad Mohammadi lives in Natomas, down the street from a new "quick-build" temporary traffic safety installation the city created after two pedestrians were killed in separate collisions. The installation went up after the second deadly collision. Asad Mohammadi /lives near deadly crash "It was a very sad day," Mohammadi said. "After that incident happened, then they put the sign up, they should have put it at the beginning." Sacramento's police department reports that so far this year, there have been 13 deadly collisions on city streets. Last year, there were 34. The year before, there were 55. Sacramento's own law and legislation committee declared an emergency in 2024 over the number of pedestrians killed in roadway collisions. "Let's talk about the cost-benefit ratio here," Gonzalez said. "What does it cost to paint a curb red, versus what does it cost for someone to die and for us to pay out a big lawsuit? I would rather be on the side of painting the curb red." The city council voted to approve a $25 fine starting July 1 for violators of the law. It will need to ID and remove spaces to begin that enforcement. What the rollout of that enforcement will look like is still unclear.

Need a charge? Check out these charger deals from Anker and UGREEN

All of these charger deals come from Amazon. The Anker Laptop Charger discount is available through an on-page coupon. Make sure to apply it before adding it to your cart. The other two deals are applied automatically, so just add them to your cart and check out. Anker Laptop Charger 140W At first sight, this may look like a normal multi-port charger, but let us tell you it is quite the upgrade. For starters, it has a really cool little display that can give you the live status of your output, port information, temperature data, and more. Fun features aside, though, it is also pretty capable. The max output, as the name entails, is 140W. These max speeds can be reached any of the two main USB-C ports, but only when charging a single devices. The wattage will be shared as you plug in more devices simultaneously. There is also a third USB-C port, but that one maxes out at 40W. The USB-A connection has a max output of 33W, which honestly still isn't bad! In a nutshell, this all means the two main USB-C ports can charge nearly any modern laptop. Of course, it will also be able to fast-charge smartphones and tablets. Mainstream high-end smartphones max out at about 45W, so you'll have wattage to spare. It's a great high-end charger, with plenty of ports and output that will keep most people happy. It's a bit on the higher-end, but it's definitely worth the investment if you want to quickly charge multiple devices. It's definitely my favorite out of these charger deals! UGREEN Nexode 200W Charger UGREEN Nexode 200W Charger UGREEN Nexode 200W Charger See price at Amazon Save $30.00 Limited Time Deal! Now, if you don't feel like spending $80 bucks, here's an option that actually has a higher output of 200W! It's also cheaper, so it's a great deal. It just happens to be older and less flashy. When charging a single device, the UGREEN Nexode 200W Charger's main USB-C port can reach 140W. The second one can reach 100W, while the third one is limited to 30W. The USB-A port is limited to 22.5W. That's not bad at all, and it's nice to see that two of these ports can charge a laptop at the same time! It's still pretty small, and just like the Anker option above, it supports the PPS standard, which many newer smartphones require to reach max speeds. Anker Nano 100W 3-Port Charger The Anker Nano 100W 3-Port Charger is much older now, but it is a pretty nice alternative if the other options above are a bit overkill. And this one is just $35.99! It's still a really good charger; It has a max output of 100W. There are two USB-C ports, and both can reach the max 100W when charging a single device. The USB-A connection maxes out at 22.5W. It's still small and portable. The only downside is that it has no PPS support, but that might not be an issue for you. And even without PPS, charging is pretty fast in most cases. Make sure to catch these deals before they go away! These are all great, and they will charge multiple devices much faster than those cheap single-port chargers you get at general stores.
