Texas at Ohio State will be first time in CFB history No. 1 has faced No. 2 in Week 1

USA Todaya day ago
When the US LBM Coaches Poll was released on Monday, it made future history. Texas was named the No. 1 team in the country and Ohio State was ranked No. 2. That means when the Longhorns and Buckeyes meet on Aug. 30 at the Horseshoe in Columbus, it will be the first time in college football history the two top teams in the nation face off in Week 1.
This is also the first time in program history that Texas is ranked No. 1 in the Coaches Poll. What was the biggest game of Week 1 just became epic in scale. ESPN College GameDay will be on hand. So will Fox Sports' Big Noon Kickoff. And the game that everyone is looking forward to just got more historic.
The game already has huge storylines. It is Arch Manning's first start as QB1. It features the defending national champion. It features college football's only back-to-back semifinalist. It is a rematch of last year's college football semifinal in the Cotton Bowl.
Now it is officially historic. Since college football polls started in 1936 with the AP Poll (the Coaches Poll started in 1950), there has never been a No. 1 vs No. 2 game in Week 1. We'll see if the AP Poll agrees on Monday, Aug. 11.
The ironic thing is there has only been one No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in Week 2 in college football history. That was Colt McCoy's second game back in 2006. The opponent? Ohio State, who won 24-7.

Wings' Arike Ogunbowale can't stop dropping dimes en route to new career-high

The post Wings' Arike Ogunbowale can't stop dropping dimes en route to new career-high appeared first on ClutchPoints. ARLINGTON, TX — Arike Ogunbowale has endured a difficult 2025 season, but you wouldn't know it by the way she played on Monday night against a talented New York Liberty team. Ogunbowale led the way with 20 points and 14 assists while also only recording one turnover. Paige Bueckers also scored 20 points as the Dallas Wings defeated New York by a final score of 92-82. Ogunbowale's 14 assists set her new career-high for a single game, as her previous mark was 13. 'In us simplifying the offense, we kind of know where each other is going to be now,' Ogunbowale told reporters after the game. 'Building that chemistry where, we know where our fours are gonna be, our fives, you know, the rest of the guards on the court. Just learning each other, just day by day we're learning each other and building that with all 11 players and I think that's showing on the court.' Ogunbowale's first half of the season was forgettable, but she is beginning to display her All-Star potential in the second half. 'Just my teammates, they always have my back,' Ogunbowale said of playing better in recent action. 'Regardless of what happened in the first half, we've been looking at it as if this is a new season, new start, scratch everything that happened and just move on from that. That's what I've been doing, that's what the team's been doing… Just focus on the present.' The Wings enjoyed a strong start. Bueckers told reporters that Dallas emphasized starting strong, and the team certainly accomplished the goal. 'We were just trying to have a fast start and come out strong,' Bueckers said. 'Deflect and make everything hard for them on defense and then get out in transition and run and attack and be on the aggressive end on offense. So, we were moving the ball, we were getting good shots within our offense. 'And then we were making catches difficult… We were good in our rotations on defense. So we're proud of the start.' The Wings will have an off day on Tuesday before their next contest on Wednesday night against the Atlanta Dream. Source: Dallas Wings' trade deadline plans come into focus

The post Source: Dallas Wings' trade deadline plans come into focus appeared first on ClutchPoints. The 2025 WNBA trade deadline is scheduled for Aug. 7. With the deadline right around the corner, there has been attention on the Dallas Wings, and fans have wondered which players may be traded. ESPN insider Alexa Philippou recently said that she's heard DiJonai Carrington mentioned as a possible trade candidate. Another player who will be a free agent following the 2025 season, Arike Ogunbowale, is someone that could make sense for Dallas to move. A source previously told ClutchPoints that the Wings likely won't trade Ogunbowale, though. So what are the Wings' trade deadline plans? A source recently told ClutchPoints that 'rebuilding' is the team's primary focus, however, the source mentioned that the team is 'open' to opportunities. The source also expressed confidence in general manager Curt Miller. 'Curt is the best about trades, drafts and moves in the league,' the source told ClutchPoints. The source did not comment on any specific players. With Dallas' primary focus set on rebuilding, though, one has to imagine the Wings will be especially focused on selling as opposed to buying. What may that entail? Rumors will swirl throughout the next week. As mentioned, Carrington has already been mentioned as a possible trade candidate as rumors begin to heat up. Curiosity will likely increase about Ogunbowale's future in Dallas as the Wings' postseason chances become increasingly unrealistic. Teaira McCowan and Myisha Hines-Allen — also upcoming free agents — will be players to monitor as well. People familiar with the situation but not associated with the Wings have suggested Hines-Allen as a trade candidate. They believe she may attract interest from contenders. The 29-year-old offers veteran prowess and can guard multiple positions. Of course, the same can be said about Carrington, who seems to be emerging as the Wings' most popular potential trade candidate. How Wings are dealing with trade rumors Trade rumors can prove to be a distraction. It is often difficult for players to focus on their craft while hearing their names linked to various other teams. Ignoring the outside noise and sticking together as a team is of the utmost importance during trade deadline season. Wings head coach Chris Koclanes was asked about the trade rumors following the team's 88-78 loss to the Indiana Fever on Friday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. 'You can't think about that,' Koclanes told reporters. 'That's part of pro sports. When we're in there, we're a team; we're together. We're focused on business, and we're focused on being great teammates for one another and continuing to be the teammate that you want to be. And be the example that you want to be. That's really all you can do.' Interestingly, Miller was in the press conference room listening to the postgame interview. He did not seem to have much of a reaction to Koclanes' comments. The Wings' plan is clearly to build around Paige Bueckers for the future. Dallas is still a year or two away from becoming a true contender, but their playoff window could open sooner rather than later if Miller and the team properly execute their trade deadline plan. Rebuilding seems to be the priority, but it remains to be seen how aggressive Dallas will be when it comes to moving on from veteran players. Wings rumors: Insider suggests DiJonai Carrington could be trade candidate

The post Wings rumors: Insider suggests DiJonai Carrington could be trade candidate appeared first on ClutchPoints. Dallas Wings forward DiJonai Carrington has endured an up and down first season with the team. Dallas acquired Carrington via trade during the offseason. With Carrington set to enter free agency following the '25 campaign, could the Wings consider moving her ahead of the upcoming WNBA trade deadline? Alexa Philippou of ESPN recently claimed she has heard Carrington's name mentioned as a possible trade candidate, something she said on ESPN, via Shabazz on X, formerly Twitter. 'There are a few teams I'm keeping my eye on,' Philippou said. 'Dallas is one of them. They're a team… already made an in-season trade to offload NaLyssa Smith, I've heard the name DiJonai Carrington brought up in WNBA circles about someone who could potentially be on the move.' In all reality, Philippou is not making some extremely bold declaration about Carrington's future. There is certainly still a chance that the forward will remain in Dallas past the trade deadline. With that being said, Carrington's future with the Wings is far from certain. Dallas is rebuilding and trading her for picks/younger players may be an option. Carrington, 27, is averaging 10.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals per outing across 19 games played so far in the 2025 season. A strong defender, Carrington could instantly impact a contender. Her offense has been far from consistent this year, but teams would likely still be open to adding a player with respectable offensive and stellar defensive potential. The Wings will have multiple challenging decisions to make before the upcoming trade deadline. Players such as DiJonai Carrington, Arike Ogunbowale and Teaira McCowan are all set to enter WNBA free agency following the season. That does not mean they will all be traded, but Dallas, as mentioned, will have difficult decisions to make. The 2025 WNBA trade deadline is scheduled for August 7 at 3 PM EST.
