2 held for killing Punjab social media influencer
Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of YouTuber Kanchan Kumari, alias Kamal Kaur, Bathinda police Friday said. A third accused, who is also the main conspirator and who claimed 'moral responsibility' of the murder, is absconding, they said. Kaur's decomposed body was found Wednesday evening in an abandoned car in the parking area of Adesh University in Bathinda, three days after she left her house to attend a promotional event, but later went missing. Senior SP Amneet Kondal identified the arrested accused as Jaspreet Singh (32) of Mehron village in Moga and Nimratjit Singh (21) of Patti in Tarn Taran. Amritpal Singh Mehron, also from Mehron village, and a self-styled Sikh radical leader, is absconding, the SSP said. 'A SUV used in the crime has been recovered. Amritpal and Nimratjit have two and one FIRs pending against them, respectively, registered at Amritsar and Dhanaula police stations,' SSP told the media. During the preliminary probe, the arrested men said they killed her for uploading 'immoral and vulgar content that hurt the community's sentiments'. Sources said the accused also wanted her to remove the surname 'Kaur' from her social media handles. The 30-year-old influencer, had an account under the name 'Kamal Kaur Bhabhi' on Instagram with 3.87 lakh followers. She operated a YouTube channel called 'Funny Bhabhi TV,' which had 2.7 lakh subscribers and another account on facebook with 7.7 lakh followers. According to the police, Kaur's mother, Girja Devi, informed them that on the night of June 7, Amritpal visited their home in Ludhiana on the pretext of a business meeting and invited Kaur to travel to Bathinda for a paid promotional event. Amritpal allegedly returned on June 8, but Kaur refused. On June 9, Girija Devi told the police, Jaspreet and Nimratjit came to their home, after which Kaur left with them. Girja Devi told the police that after 11 pm on June 9, she lost all contact with her daughter. According to the police, at around 1 am on June 10, Jaspreet and Nimratjit allegedly drove Kaur to a deserted location where they strangulated her. The accused then placed the body in Kaur's car and Jaspreet drove it to the parking lot at around 5.30 am on June 10. He parked the car and fled with Nimratjit.

Sushant Singh Rajput 5th Death Anniversary: What Really Happened To Late Actor's Case?
Last Updated: The CBI concluded that Sushant Singh Rajput's death was a "simple case of suicide" and that there was no evidence of foul play or criminal conspiracy. Nearly five years after the untimely death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officially concluded earlier this year that there was no foul play involved. His death on June 14, 2020, sent shockwaves across the nation and triggered widespread public outrage, multiple investigations and intense speculation. Here's a detailed look at the developments that followed and where the case stands today. How Did Sushant Singh Rajput Die? Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence in Mumbai on June 14, 2020. He was 34. According to his post-mortem report, conducted at Mumbai's Cooper Hospital, the cause of death was 'asphyxia due to hanging." The report also mentioned there were no signs of struggle or external injuries. Allegations and Initial Investigation The initial investigation was carried out by the Mumbai Police. However, things escalated when Rajput's father, K K Singh, filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the Bihar Police accusing the late actor's then-girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, and her family of abetment to suicide and financial fraud amounting to Rs 15 crore. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rhea Chakraborty (@rhea_chakraborty) Amid growing public pressure and jurisdictional conflict between the Bihar and Mumbai Police, the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation in August 2020. CBI's Probe and Key Findings After taking over the case, the CBI formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into all aspects of Rajput's death. The agency examined multiple angles, including possible professional rivalry, financial transactions and abetment to suicide. 'After an extensive investigation that involved gathering forensic evidence, technical data from the US, medical opinions and questioning of all persons connected, we haven't found any foul play in the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput," a senior CBI officer was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times in March 2025. Medical Analysis and Expert Reports The CBI had consulted top doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, who reviewed Rajput's post-mortem and viscera reports. In September 2020, the AIIMS panel confirmed the death as a suicide and ruled out any foul play. Their report stated there were no struggle marks on the body and that the death was caused by hanging. The central agency had also employed advanced digital forensic tools and reached out to tech giants Google and Facebook in 2021 to obtain the late actor's deleted chats, emails and social media activity. These were analysed to understand Rajput's mental state and the events leading up to his death. No suspicious findings emerged from this data. Rhea Chakraborty and Counter Allegations Apart from the FIR filed by Rajput's family, Rhea Chakraborty filed a counter case in September 2020 against Rajput's sister Priyanka Singh and a Delhi-based doctor. She alleged that a forged medical prescription for psychiatric drugs was obtained for Rajput without consultation. CBI, after investigating both cases, ruled out any criminal conspiracy or forged documentation. Closure Report In March 2025, the CBI officially filed a closure report, citing it as a 'simple case of suicide." The report gives a clean chit to Rhea Chakraborty and her family, bringing legal closure to the extensive investigation that spanned five years and multiple cities, including Mumbai, Patna, Hyderabad, Faridabad and Delhi. What Is Rhea Chakraborty Doing Now? In 2020, Rhea Chakraborty spent approximately one month in jail. She was arrested in September of that year by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with a drug-related case linked to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. She was granted bail by the Bombay High Court in early October 2020. She spent 28 days in Byculla jail. Since the investigation's conclusion, Rhea has gradually returned to public life. She recently launched her streetwear brand, Chapter 2 Drip, with investment from industry veterans Kishore and Ashni Biyani. She also hosts a podcast titled Chapter 2, where she speaks about life after loss, resilience and moving forward. What Is Happening Now? Despite the CBI's findings, interest in Rajput's case remains high. His passing had sparked a national debate on mental health, nepotism and the pressure of fame. While the official verdict closes the legal chapter, public discourse around his life and death continues to shape narratives in Bollywood and beyond. First Published:

Trump administration to keep detaining pro-Palestine activist Mahmoud Khalil despite judge's order
The US government said on Friday pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil would remain in detention after a U.S. judge ruled foreign policy interests could not be used to justify confinement of the Columbia University student and pro-Palestinian activist. Khalil's lawyers had called for his immediate release, but U.S. attorneys said in a letter to the judge they would keep holding him on other charges such as immigration fraud that were not addressed in the Wednesday ruling. Civil rights groups say Khalil's arrest and detention are an attack on protected political speech. Lawyers for the Syrian-born activist were fighting for his release as Kilmar Abrego Garcia, another immigrant targeted by the Trump administration, pleaded not guilty to migrant smuggling charges after his wrongful deportation. Mahmoud Khalil's wife gives birth to their first child, claims ICE refused to let him see family Marc Van Der Hout, a lawyer for Khalil, said the government practically never detained people for immigration fraud and he was being punished for opposing Israel's U.S.-backed war in Gaza following Hamas' October 2023 attack. "Detaining someone on a charge like this is highly unusual and frankly outrageous," said Khalil's lawyer Marc Van Der Hout. "There continues to be no constitutional basis for his detention." Newark, New Jersey-based U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz on Wednesday ruled the administration was violating Khalil's right to free speech by trying to deport him under a little-used law granting the U.S. secretary of state power to seek deportation of non-citizens whose presence in the country was deemed adverse to U.S. foreign policy interests. Also Read: As Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil faces US deportation, Columbia Journalism School speaks out The U.S. government has also said Khalil should be deported because he fraudulently withheld information from his application for a green card. Khalil's lawyers said allegations he misrepresented himself in his application are spurious. Farbiarz has written that lawful permanent residents are rarely detained on the basis of immigration fraud. Khalil, a prominent figure in pro-Palestinian protests against Israel's war on Gaza, was arrested by immigration agents in the lobby of his university residence in Manhattan on March 8. He has since been held in immigration detention in Louisiana. Khalil's U.S. citizen wife, Dr. Noor Abdalla, gave birth to the couple's first child while Khalil was detained in April.
