M.P. cop kills himself inside police station premises; alleges harassment by officers, sand mafia
According to the police, ASI Pramod Pavan, who hailed from the Scheduled Castes (SC), was found dead in his quarters in the Godan police station premises and is suspected to have ended his life in the intervening night of Monday (July 21, 2025) and Tuesday.
Datia Superintendent of Police (SP) Suraj Kumar Verma told The Hindu that Pavan shared multiple videos to his relatives and on various WhatsApp groups before killing himself, in which he made allegations against station in-charge Arvind Singh Bhadauria, constable-driver Roop Narayan Yadav and neighbouring Tharet police station Anfasul Hasan. He also named one Babloo Yadav in his allegations, who he claimed was part of the local 'sand mafia'.
In the videos that have gone viral on social media, Pavan said that the alleged harassment began after he had caught a tractor-trolley carrying illegally mined sand of Mr. Babloo Yadav.
'Since then, I've been harassed continuously. I haven't been allowed to leave the station to even get my AADHAAR or SAMAGRA cards made. Casteist slurs are hurled at me daily. I can't even eat properly,' Mr. Pavan said in one of the videos, while accusing the four men of threatening to run him over by a tractor.
'If anything happens to me, all these three cops and the sand mafia Babloo Yadav will be responsible for it,' he is heard saying.
In another video, Pavan also accused Mr. Bhadauria and Mr. Roop Narayan of sheltering local gambling dens in the area, and alleged that multiple murders have taken place due to the alleged dens in the last few years.
'If the call details of constable-cum-driver Roop Narayan Yadav are examined in detail, crucial evidence related to various murders will come to the fore,' the deceased ASI is heard saying.
Mr. Verma said that an investigation headed by the Deputy SP (AJK) has been launched in Pavan's death and allegations made by him, while Mr. Bhadauria and Mr. Roop Narayan have been taken off duty and attached to the police line.
'We have started inquest proceedings and a case will be lodged based on the preliminary investigation. We have removed the two officers to maintain transparency in the probe. Any action against Mr. Hasan will be taken based on the probe since he does not seem to have any direct connection with the ASI,' he said.
Mr. Verma said that he was not aware of the allegations made by Pavan earlier and the latter had not approached his office with any complaint.
'Two of his brothers are also in the police force and one of them is posted here at the police line. He could have reached out to them to give his complaint,' he said, while adding that the police will look into all aspects related to the matter.
'We will probe any connection between the victims and the concerned officers. We will also see if the civilian [Mr. Babloo Yadav] has had any link to Mr. Pavan or ever gave a complaint against him,' he added.

Gujarat HC grants relief to news anchor accused in defamation, atrocities case after complaint by senior Congress leader
The Gujarat High Court on Monday granted relief to an Ahmedabad-based news anchor in a case of defamation and atrocity, filed by Congress leader Dr Tushar Chaudhary, based on the assurance of the Additional Public Prosecutor that the journalist will be served a notice of 15 days in case the investigating officer deems it appropriate to arrest her. Justice Nirzar Desai was hearing the petition by Gopi Maniar-Ghanghar, anchor of Ahmedabad-based Nirbhay News Channel, for quashing and setting aside the FIR lodged at Tapi District, based on Chaudhary's complaint under Section 356 (Defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and various sections of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Chaudhary is the newly appointed Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in Gujarat Assembly. The court order stated, 'Public Prosecutor Hardik Dave has made a statement before this Court upon instructions received by the Nikita Shiroya (SC/ST Cell Tapi Vyara) that… the investigation is at very initial stage and therefore, it would serve the end of justice if this Court records the statement of learned Public Prosecutor that in case, during the course of investigation, if the investigating officer deems it appropriate to arrest the present applicant, she will be given a clear notice of fifteen days and upon receipt of the notice…' The court further said, 'The applicant would be at liberty to avail appropriate remedy so as to take remedial measure to seek relief against her proposed arrest. Such a period would start from the date of receipt of the notice by the present applicant.' Chaudhary's complaint is also against Jagdish Mehta, group editor of Rajkot-based Headlines News channel. Chaudhary has alleged that the journalists had defamed him and his deceased father, former Gujarat Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaudhary. In the FIR, the Congress MLA from Khedbrahma has alleged that in a show aired on July 22 on Nirbhay News, Ghanghar made an objectionable statement against him. He said Mehta consented to the statements, which were 'defamatory for him and the entire tribal community'. Ghanghar's advocate Utkarsh Dave said, '…Ghanghar… was the interviewer, who does not have control over what the other person is going to say… We will proceed with legal remedy in case the notice for arrest is issued.'

Aadhaar is new weak link in insurance
Mumbai: After manipulating PIN codes for over a decade, fraudsters have found a new way in the insurance system to exploit Aadhaar-linked processes for identity-based frauds. From motor insurance to health claims, criminals are now manipulating Aadhaar data through forged documents to file bogus claims. UP Police have, as of late July, sent out notices to several insurance companies to share details of the claims teams and other executives involved. These cases involve fake documents and coordinated efforts across banks and insurers. "Aadhaar is emerging as the latest weak link in the fraud chain," said Anukriti Sharma, additional SP Sambhal. "Fraudsters have started creating fake identities using forged or manipulated Aadhaar cards to obtain policies, and to initiate fictitious claims." Live Events Investigations by UP Police have shown that not only are these criminals targeting life and health insurance policies with forged documents but are also running organised rackets for auto insurance. "We have had 2-3 cases tied to the UP fraud," said Krishnan Ramachandran, MD and CEO, Niva Bupa Health Insurance. "Our fraud investigation team is actively involved. These cases often involve fake documents and coordinated efforts." Several life insurers and general insurers have reported instances where Aadhaar-linked phone numbers and email IDs did not match the policyholder's actual contact details, and these frauds go undetected until a claim is filed or money is withdrawn. In certain cases, police found that the syndicate members scout hospital corridors and rural villages for the most vulnerable or people already facing death or poverty. They convince families to hand over Aadhaar details, alter addresses to bypass blacklisted pin codes, and open accounts in their names using small finance banks with less oversight. Then came the life insurance policies where policies worth ₹20 lakh or more are taken. IIB has been stepping up efforts using several modules and platforms for fraud detection and prevention. For instance, one of the tools that stored 144 million records helped identify 300,000 potentially fraudulent life insurance cases, involving a sum assured of ₹1.73 lakh crore over five years.
