LABUAN (April 27): Local siblings Nadzmar Sukarno and Shahdan Sukarno continued their remarkable dominance in sea sports by clinching their third consecutive victory in the Labuan International Round Island Kayak Challenge 2025.
Representing the Labuan Canoe Association, the brothers showcased outstanding endurance and determination by winning the 51.2-kilometre race, despite undergoing only three months of training ahead of the competition.
The Labuan Round Island Kayak Challenge, renowned for its demanding course that circumnavigates Labuan Island, drew 48 participants from various states across Malaysia, and neighbouring Brunei.
Competitors battled strong sea currents, unpredictable weather, and open-water conditions, making it a true test of physical and mental strength.
Labuan Corporation chief executive officer, Mohd Sukuran Taib praised the brothers' achievement, noting that their success underscores the growing strength of Labuan's athlete development programmes.
He said their achievement reaffirmed their status as among Malaysia's top kayak athletes.
'The victory of Nadzmar and Shahdan for the third year in a row is a testament to their exceptional discipline, skill, and perseverance.
'Winning an event of this scale and difficulty with only three months of preparation is simply remarkable.
'This success also reflects the effectiveness of Labuan's ongoing efforts to nurture sporting talent, particularly in sea sports. It is achievements like these that inspire young athletes to strive for excellence,' he said to Bernama after the event's closing ceremony on Sunday.
Their latest triumph at the Labuan Round Island Kayak Challenge marks another proud milestone for Labuan, inspiring the next generation of sea sports champions from the island.
Mohd Sukuran highlighted the Labuan International Round Island Kayak Challenge is one of the four flagship events of LISC 2025, alongside the International Deep Sea Fishing Challenge, the Regatta International Race, and the Labuan Kayak Mini Marathon Challenge.
The Labuan International Sea Challenge 2025, held from April 22 to 27, featured 12 exhilarating events and attracted thousands of visitors.-Bernama

UPSI developing international water sports facility

UNIVERSITI Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) is charting new territory as an international kayaking hub, developing a state-of-the-art water sports facility worth RM1mil at the UPSI Marina in Perak. Its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff said the initiative, which included enhancement of the lake, acquisition of the latest kayaking equipment, specialised reference materials and the support of sports science expertise, had positioned UPSI as a leading destination for training, research and the management of national water sports events. 'UPSI offers more than just physical infrastructure. We are backed by strong academic capabilities and technical expertise,' he told Bernama. The university currently has four national-level kayaking experts based at the Faculty of Sports Science and Coaching, ready to provide guidance and advisory services to athletes, coaches and sports organisations, he highlighted. With ongoing scientific research, up-to-date reference resources and the application of cutting-edge water sports technology, UPSI is poised to become an integrated training centre for kayaking as well as a platform for organising local and international tournaments, he said. Prof Md Amin said this when opening the 16th UPSI Kayak Regatta at Gerbang Suria on the Sultan Azlan Shah Campus near Tanjong Malim in Perak. 'Our aim is not just to produce excellent athletes but also to develop kayaking through a holistic approach that encompasses training, sports science, management and education,' he said. Prof Md Amin said UPSI was in the process of securing official recognition from the Asian Canoe Confederation as one of the primary venues for canoe and dragon boat sports development and championships in the country. 'Once recognised, UPSI will join the ranks of Malaysian universities with international-class status as a centre for kayaking and dragon boat sports development,' he added. UPSI offers comprehensive educational opportunities for athletes, ranging from diploma to doctorate programme. This includes a special pathway known as Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning for Qualifications (APEL Q), tailored for coaches. 'We believe sports and education should progress together. 'Through this dedicated pathway, coaches with over 20 years of experience can further their studies through the Master of Education programme in Sports Science,' said Prof Md Amin.

Endrick Determined To Help Harimau Malaya Break Vietnam Hoodoo

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) – Harimau Malaya midfielder Endrick Dos Santos is determined to draw on the experience and insights he gained during his time in Vietnam to help the national team secure a positive result against the Golden Star Warriors in the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers this Tuesday. Endrick, who is currently on loan with Ho Chi Minh City in the 1 for the 2024-2025 season, said he was working closely with the coaching staff to offer ideas and tactical input that could help Malaysia claim a long-awaited victory over Vietnam — a feat they have not achieved since 2014. 'Many times we come prepared. We also have our analysts who study their game. They are fast, strong, and aggressive, but they also have weaknesses, so we train hard, follow the coach's plan, and I believe we are in a good position to perform well again,' he said at a press conference today.
