Malaysia hosts SDMX workshop to boost regional statistical capacity
The workshop gathered over 30 statisticians, data professionals, and IT officers from national statistical offices (NSOs) in Bhutan, Brunei, India, Indonesia, and Malaysia. DOSM stated that the event reinforced Malaysia's leadership in promoting global data standards and fostering a resilient, data-driven ecosystem.
'This workshop marks a strategic milestone in capacity-building and institutional empowerment, supporting structured governance and interoperability in statistical systems,' said DOSM.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin emphasized SDMX's role in enhancing institutional integration and public trust. 'SDMX is not just about technical interoperability—it strengthens accountability, transparency, and the impact of official statistics,' he said.
The workshop aligns with global efforts to modernize statistical ecosystems, backed by organizations like the UN, IMF, World Bank, and Eurostat. It also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by improving data quality and comparability.
Mohd Uzir highlighted the need for structured data standards, integrating frameworks like the Generic Statistical Business Process Model (GSBPM) to enhance policy formulation. 'Data is a national asset, crucial for economic resilience and inclusive governance,' he added.
DOSM also announced preparations for the 2026 Economic Census, which will provide detailed economic data to guide policymaking nationwide. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: The Public Works Ministry (KKR) will integrate cutting-edge technology into strategic infrastructure projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (MP13), focusing on road networks, highways, bridges, and public facilities. In a statement today, KKR emphasised that MP13 is not just about physical development but also aims to uplift living standards for all Malaysians, ensuring equitable progress across urban and rural regions. Digitalisation efforts will also be prioritised through initiatives such as MyJalan, the Highway Network Development Plan, and the Road Accident Management System to optimise planning and maintenance. The ministry highlighted that these measures aim to deliver cost-efficient infrastructure by minimising project delays, which could otherwise increase national spending and defer public benefits. MP13, tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, includes key projects like the Rantau Panjang–Sungai Golok bridge upgrade (Malaysia-Thailand link) and the Kalabakan–Simanggaris road (Malaysia-Indonesia connection). Other major developments include the Central Spine Road (Bentong to Kuala Krai), the Pan Borneo Highway completion in Sabah and Sarawak, and the Sarawak–Sabah Link Road. The Prime Minister also announced upgrades for major highways and 2,800 km of rural roads by 2030. Jo Ghani: US' 19 per cent tariff on Malaysian palm oil competitive
PASIR GUDANG: The 19 per cent export tariff imposed by the United States (US) on Malaysian commodities, including palm oil, is considered competitive and not burdensome compared to other Asean countries, said Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Johari said Malaysia remained in a good competitive position as the tariff rate was among the lowest in the region. "The 19 per cent tariff imposed by the US on Malaysia is among the lowest in Asean countries. Even Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, is subject to the same tariff rate. If we look at the context of palm oil commodities, Indonesia is the largest producer, number one in the world, and we are number two. But Indonesia is also subject to 19 per cent like Malaysia, so there is no problem, meaning we have a 'fair fight'," he said. He was speaking at a press conference after officiating the Pasir Gudang Umno Division Delegates Conference today. Also present was Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who is also an Umno vice-president and Pasir Gudang Umno division chief. Malaysia was subjected to the 19 per cent tariff based on an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump. The document for the reciprocal tariff rate adjustment, signed by Trump on July 31, 2025, has been uploaded to the White House website. Previously, Trump set a 25 per cent tariff for Malaysia, but it is understood that a phone conversation between him and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday may have been a factor in the tariff reduction. Johari, who is also performing the duties of the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, added that there had been no significant issues with the country's commodity exports due to the tariff rate. "Malaysia's commodity exports are still able to compete fairly in the international market. I don't see any problems so far with the 19 per cent tariff imposed by the US on our country's commodity exports," he said.

New villages welcome news on 13MP incentives
Chinese new villagers want better basic infrastructure, job opportunities and more community spaces as the Government pledges support under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said the socio‑economic level of Chinese new villages would be strengthened through the Kampung Baru Development Master Plan, which would provide financing for entrepreneurial activities, including the preparation and upgrading of hawker sites. Lim says the Prime Minister's announcement on 13MP is encouraging. At Selangor's Seri Berjuntai New Village in Bestari Jaya, which has about 2,500 residents, village chief Chiang Yoke Leong said employment prospects were limited. 'There are more job opportunities in other towns like Ijok,' he said. On infrastructure, Chiang said that while some drainage upgrades have been carried out, those projects were 'few and far between'. He also highlighted the lack of a waste collection facility, adding that tourism had yet to take off in the village. 'Most people bypass our village, but with funding and new proposals we hope to build up some kind of cottage industry or tourist sites,' he said. Kampung Cempaka New Village chief Theresa Lim said Anwar's announcement was encouraging. 'It is good news for new villages,' she said. Lim said that while most residents in the Petaling Jaya village were senior citizens, a younger community still remained. 'There is potential for them to get some kind of funding to start a business in the village. 'As for infrastructure, the situation can be improved with better roads and proper drainage,' she said. Lim also hoped for more green spaces for the village's elderly folk.
