Should or shouldn't RM21m be spent on ‘kenduri Madani' amid depleting nation's wealth?

Focus Malaysia19 hours ago
PERHAPS the concerns are real if pitted against the backdrop of the Madani government having taken another RM4.5 bil of debt on Wednesday (Aug 7) which pushes the total net government bond borrowings in 2025 to RM85.78 bil which already exceeded the 2025 deficit target of RM80 bil.
But at micro level, man-on-the-street Malaysians have a field day trading thoughts on the recent revelation by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof that the federal government spent over RM21 mil on the Madani Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations in 2024 and 2025 across seven states.
The point of contention is that the cost was fully funded without private sponsorships or GLC (government-linked company) contributions.
Despite Fadillah justifying that the celebrations followed a nationwide format introduced in 2023 which is unlike the 2022 Klang Valley-only event which incurred a higher cost of RM11 mil, prominent Madani government critic Jaywalker (@jaywalkertoto) tended to view forking out RM21 mil as a 'wastage'.
'RM21 mil for a Kemduri Madani, zero from GLCs, 100% tabung rakyat (taxpayers'' money),' he lambasted on X in a reaction to a post by BFM News (@NewsBFM).
RM21 million for Madani kenduri, zero from GLCs, 100% tabung rakyat??!! Meanwhile, 60% of msians can't survive a rm1000 emergency!! Unity isn't built on buffet lines & it is buried under unpaid bills & shrinking savings!!! https://t.co/OSHN9RZEZg

'Meanwhile, 60% of Malaysians can't survive a RM1,000 emergency! Unity isn't built on buffet lines & it is buried under unpaid bills & shrinking savings!'
Probably depending on one's political affiliation, the poster's rigid view has its supporters with one commenter ticking off the Madani government 'for always setting the wrong priorities' given the RM21 mil could be better channelled 'to sponsor young people to enter university'.
However, the proponents claimed that the kenduri Madani bash – apart from delighting and feeding the masses – has benefitted many vendors ranging from caterers to logistics provider, event companies and cleaning service firm, hence ensuring employment for their staff who include artists and entertainers.
After all, apart from oiling the economy, most of the industry players involved in facilitating the kenduri Madani are Bumiputera entrepreneurs.
Another commenter worked out the maths that it would only cost 'around RM1.5 mil each' to stage 14 kenduri Madani events over the two-year period.
'I think that's still better than the previous single-location Raya open house in Putrajaya that cost over RM10 mil,' he rationalised.
'I'm not saying it's okay but it's an improvement. Hopefully, from next year onwards, they can bring the costs down further.'
The bottom line as mooted by one commenter is that 'it's all normal to budget for entertainment' but cautioned that. although government's spending plays a role in fuelling the economy, 'just don't spend too much when there are other more important things to focus on'. – Aug 9, 2025

Penang PKR Youth condemns upside-down Jalur Gemilang display at hardware store

KUALA LUMPUR: Penang PKR's Youth wing has strongly condemned the act of flying the Jalur Gemilang upside-down in front of a hardware store in Kepala Batas, Penang. Its chief, Muhammad Zakwan Mustafa Kamal, said the act was disrespectful, irresponsible, and an insult to the dignity of the nation. "The Jalur Gemilang is a symbol of sovereignty, unity, and the pride of the Malaysian people. Flying it upside down is an unacceptable insult, especially as we celebrate the month of independence," he said in a statement today. Zakwan called for an immediate investigation by the authorities and for legal action to be taken without compromise if the act was proven to be deliberate. He said the shop owner should also issue a public apology to all Malaysians. He also reminded all business owners in Penang to ensure the national flag is flown correctly and with the utmost respect. "We wish to remind everyone that the Jalur Gemilang is not merely a decoration. It is a symbol of the sacrifices of our independence fighters and the identity of our beloved nation. To neglect or make a mockery of it is a form of betrayal against the values of patriotism. "We will not remain silent when the nation's symbol is insulted. We stand firmly with Malaysians who love this country, demanding justice and ensuring that such incidents do not happen again," he said.

Zara Qairina case: No one to be protected

"Our instructions are clear - no compromise, regardless of whose child it is, whether the child of a minister or anyone else, I don't care." 09 Aug 2025 09:20pm Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has given his assurance that the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir in Sabah will be investigated transparently without protecting anyone. Photo by Bernama KOTA BHARU - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has given his assurance that the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir in Sabah will be investigated transparently without protecting anyone. He said the case should not be taken lightly, especially as various allegations have emerged, including that the victim had fallen, been pushed, or bullied. "Our child in Sabah has died; some say she fell, some say she was pushed, some say it was due to bullying. We do not take this lightly, and we do not want it to be turned into political fodder. "Our instructions are clear - no compromise, regardless of whose child it is, whether the child of a minister or anyone else, I don't care,' he said at the Rancakkan Madani Kelantan Programme at USM Health Campus, Kubang Kerian, here today. The Prime Minister said he had contacted Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure the investigation is carried out fairly. "I asked whether there were any mistakes in the investigation into Zara Qairina's case. If there were, take action. This is a death. Regardless of whether it is the child of the poor or the rich, in the mountains, on land or at sea, we will pay attention because the investigation must be conducted transparently. I am saddened because she could have been my child or grandchild. "Due to suspicions, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has ordered the exhumation of the body for a second post-mortem," he said. He said Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar has also been instructed to go to Sabah to monitor the investigation to prevent any perception that certain parties are being protected. "This is the Madani government; we will not protect murderers," he added. The death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir has shocked the nation amid growing outrage over suspected bullying at her school in Papar, Sabah. Today, Zara Qairina's body was exhumed to complete the investigation into the student's death following the AGC's directive yesterday. Yesterday, the AGC, in a statement, said Zara Qairina's remains needed to be exhumed to enable a post-mortem to be carried out on the student's body. The AGC is of the view that further investigation is necessary for the police to ensure all aspects of the case can be examined thoroughly. Zara Qairina, 13, was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17. The student had been taken to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the hostel of a religious school in Papar at 4am on July 16. - BERNAMA More Like This
