Remembering the SMS Bears in the 2003 College World Series
And one big sports story this week was Murray State beating Duke in an NCAA Super Regional.
That gave the Racers a ticket to the College World Series in Omaha.
Murray State becomes the first Valley team to make it to Omaha since the Southwest Missouri State Bears back in 2003.
I thought it was time to break out Danny's Way Back Machine.
Periodically we'll crank up the Way Back Machine, blow off the dust from some file tape, and show you what it looked like back in the day.
So we take you back to June of 2003, the Southwest Missouri State Bears baseball team was on a roll.
After winning the Valley's regular season, the Bears earned an at-large berth to the Lincoln regional in the NCAA tournament.
SMS beat Coastal Carolina in the opening game 8-3.
Then the Bears took two of three from Nebraska to earn a trip to the Super Regional in Columbus, Ohio.
In Columbus, Southwest Missouri State swept the home town Buckeyes 13-8 and 13-7.
Evidently 13 was a lucky number for coach Keith Guttin and the Bears.
So the crew went off to Omaha with a roster full of talent.
Shaun Marcum, Brad Ziegler and Jeff Gray eventually made it to the major leagues.
And a first baseman named Scott Nasby, became the baseball coach at Drury.
The Bears played Rice in the first game at the College World Series.
Greg Mathis hit a home run for the Bears but Rice won the game 4-2.
SMS faced Miami in the elimination game, the Hurricanes built a big lead, but the Bears battled back.
Shaun Marcum belted a three run homer late to make Miami nervous, but the Hurricanes beat SMS 7-to-5.
But it was an historic run for Keith Guttin and the Southwest Missouri State Bears.
The team won 40 games, the Valley's regular season championship, and advanced further than any other baseball team in Missouri State history.
So I hope you enjoyed your trip through the Way Back Machine to the year 2003.
MoState still has a few weeks left in the Valley conference, enough time to cheer on Murray State in Omaha at the College World Series.

And I'll see you then.

2025 Missouri State Football Predictions: Bears Ranked 123rd in RJ Young's Ultimate 136
College Football 2025 Missouri State Football Predictions: Bears Ranked 123rd in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 9:42 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where Missouri State lands in my Ultimate 136. Team ranking: No. 123 Last year's ranking: N/A Top player: RB Shomari Lawrence: Has rushed for 1,500 yards and 9 TDs in his last four collegiate seasons (South Dakota and FIU). [ Missouri State's 2025 schedule ] RJ's take: Like Delaware, the Bears have reclassified to Big Boy football in C-USA. They aren't as put-together as the Blue Hens are — or were in 2024 — but they've got a QB who could make them a credible, if bothersome, opponent in Year 1. ADVERTISEMENT 6-foot-5 QB Jacob Clark threw for 3,604 yards and 26 TDs in 2024. And he's got a couple of wide outs who look like they could do some damage in James BlackStrain and Jmariyae Robinson. The duo combined for 62 catches and 953 yards last season. [ Check out RJ Young's Ultimate 136 College Football Rankings here ] Missouri State Win Total Odds: Over 4.5 (-110) Under 4.5 (-110) Have an issue with my rankings? 2025 Baylor Football Predictions: Bears Ranked 44th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136
College Football 2025 Baylor Football Predictions: Bears Ranked 44th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 8:44 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where Baylor lands in my Ultimate 136. Baylor ranking: 44 Last year's ranking: 63 Top player: QB Sawyer Robertson: Finished fifth in the Big 12 in pass yards with 3,071 and second in pass TDs with 28; one of 21 players in FBS to throw for 3,000+ yards and 25+ pass TDs last season. [Baylor's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: Dave Aranda's Bears won six of their last seven games, with their loss coming to LSU. In Year 6, Aranda believes he has the most talented team he's ever had in Waco, Texas. And remember, his team finished 12-2 in 2021. ADVERTISEMENT Pairing offensive coordinator Jake Spavital with QB Sawyer Robertson could prove lethal for the Big 12. Robertson didn't win the job in preseason camp, and he still finished with 3,071 passing yards, 32 total TDs and eight INTs. They get a chance to lay down a marker against Auburn in Week 1 and SMU in Week 2. And those are the toughest opponents they play before Arizona State. 10 wins is in the offering if Aranda is right about his team's talent. [Check out RJ Young's Ultimate 136 College Football Rankings here] Baylor Win Total Odds: Over 7.5 (-105) Under 7.5 (-115) Have an issue with my rankings? How did Quinn Ewers play vs. Bears? Dolphins QB stalls in NFL preseason debut
Quinn Ewers joined the NFL rookie QB debut party on Sunday. Unfortunately, he may have had the worst time of them all. The Miami Dolphins' 2025 seventh-round pick got the lion's share of the work vs. the Chicago Bears, giving him a first, lengthy taste of NFL action. The one-time five-star recruit and Texas Longhorn product, though, got something of a rude awakening in his Sunday debut. Ewers went just 4-for-16 passing and was under constant duress throughout the matchup, which ended in a 24-24 tie. While the expectations are low for Ewers – and the competition even less so given preseason Week 1 – he had a debut that he may want to put in the rearview mirror soon. Here's how Ewers performed: Quinn Ewers stats today Ewers put together a line to forget in his first NFL game action vs. the Bears: Completions/Attempts: 5/18 Passing yards: 91 (5.1 YPC) Passing touchdowns: 0 Passer rating: 48.1 Sacks: 2 Interceptions: 0 Fumbles (lost): 2 (2) Rushing yards (attempts): 0 (0) Ewers was the third quarterback on the field for the Dolphins following starter Tua Tagovailoa and Zach Wilson, getting most of the passing work. He played with backups, so the less-than-great performance wasn't entirely on his shoulder pads. Still, Ewers showcased a lack of anticipation on some throws and took two inopportune strip sacks, including one while the Miami offense was backed up near its goal line. That all makes for a painful performance to forget for the rookie. He'll likely get another bite at the apple when the Dolphins take on the Detroit Lions on Saturday, Aug. 16. As the saying goes, it's only up from here for the Dolphins' seventh-rounder. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Quinn Ewers stats today: Dolphins QB has debut to forget
