TikTok Launches 'Footnotes' Feature in US
TikTok has rolled out a new feature called 'Footnotes' in the United States for the first time, giving users the ability to add explanatory notes that provide context to videos.
The tool allows creators to clarify complex topics, such as breaking down scientific concepts, adding updated statistics to an ongoing news story, or even choosing whether comments appear alongside the video.
The move draws comparisons to community fact-checking tools already in use on other platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram. X pioneered the concept in 2021 under the name 'Birdwatch,' which continued after Elon Musk's 2022 takeover.
Octavio Vinhas, a researcher at Brazil's National Institute for Science and Technology in Conflicts and Information Sovereignty, said the initiative aligns with U.S. President Donald Trump's more liberal vision of free expression on social media. However, he noted that TikTok's Footnotes differ from X's approach, as TikTok still prompts users to cite sources for their notes, something not required on X.
Scott Hale, associate professor at the Oxford Internet Institute, explained that the main challenge for all social media companies is ensuring that the right people see these notes. Platforms typically use similarity-based ranking systems, comparing what content a user receives with that of others, as well as accounts followed or videos watched.
The algorithm also exposes content to users deemed 'different' from the note's author to test its usefulness. Only notes passing this evaluation appear publicly.
But according to Vinhas, most notes never reach an audience. A June study by the Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA) found that over 90% of the 1.7 million English- and Spanish-language notes in X's public database had never been published online. While the average time to publish notes dropped to 14 days in 2025, down from 100 days in 2022, delays still persist.
Hale added that discovering notes that challenge a user's perspective remains difficult, given social media's tendency to reinforce existing beliefs. 'It's very easy to lock ourselves into parts of networks that are similar to us,' he said.
One potential improvement, Hale suggested, would be making notes interactive, similar to Wikipedia's model, where contributors have their own pages showcasing their edits.

Instagram Launches ‘Map' Feature
Israa Farhan Instagram has rolled out a new feature called 'Instagram Map,' enabling users to share their latest activity locations with friends and discover location-based content. The Meta-owned platform is also introducing post re-sharing and a new 'Friends' tab on its short-form video service, Reels, available globally. The 'Map' update closely mirrors a popular feature on rival Snapchat, following Instagram's earlier adoption of the Stories format from Snapchat in 2016. With more than 400 million monthly active users, Instagram surpasses Snapchat's Snap Map in reach, making the new feature one of its most prominent additions in recent years. According to Instagram, location sharing on Instagram Map is switched off by default. Users' location data will only update when the app is opened, meaning it does not provide live location tracking. By contrast, Snap Map allows users to choose between updating their location only when using the app or sharing it in real time. Instagram says the new tool will make it easier for friends to coordinate meet-ups and for users to explore content linked to places shared by friends and favorite creators. For example, if a friend attends a nearby music festival and posts a Story, it will appear on the map. Similarly, if a creator uploads a short video about a new restaurant, its location will be tagged on Instagram Map. Regardless of whether a user shares their own location, the map can still be used to explore geographically tagged content. The feature also allows users to leave short 'notes' on the map for others to see. read more UAE's Lunar Mission Delayed to Tomorrow Twitter Lifts Trump's Account Ban Scientists Find Evidence Of 10،000 Black Holes Surrounding The Center Of The Milky Way Galaxy Greenhouse In Antarctica Able To Grow Vegetables Without Soil Or Sunlight Moving Over China: U.S. Is Again Home to World's Speediest Supercomputer Technology The 10 most expensive cars in the world Technology Top 10 fastest cars in the world Technology Lasers Could Make Computers 1 Million Times Faster Technology Smart technology taking control of our lives News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani

United Bank contributes EGP 600m to syndicated loan worth EGP 6.2bn for Mountain View project
United Bank has participated with EGP 600m in a syndicated long-term loan worth EGP 6.2bn, arranged by a consortium of six banks led by Banque Misr, to finance part of the Mountain View 1.1 project's EGP 14.4bn investment cost. The facility has a maximum tenor of seven years. CEO Ashraf El Kady said the bank's participation reflects its commitment to supporting the state's development strategy and contributing to sustainable, integrated infrastructure projects that enhance citizens' quality of life. He highlighted the construction sector's vital role in driving economic growth and GDP expansion, noting that bank financing for such projects helps stimulate investment and create jobs. El Kady also stressed the importance of directing investment to promote balanced geographic and demographic development, easing population pressure on the Nile Valley and Delta, while supporting housing supply for various income segments—particularly middle-income and social housing—thereby fostering social stability. Deputy Managing Director for Business Sectors Nevine Kashmiry said United Bank is a major supporter of Egypt's construction sector, given its central role in development. She noted that the country's urban expansion under the 'New Republic' includes the New Administrative Capital and 12 new smart cities such as New Alexandria, New Assiut, New Suez, and New Alamein. Deputy CEO Farag Abdel Hamid described the participation as a reflection of the bank's national role in shaping Egypt's future under Vision 2030, while Deputy CEO Moataz El Kassaby stressed the bank's preference for partnering with developers committed to quality and sustainability standards to maximise economic and social returns. Albir Nasan, Head of Syndicated Loans, said United Bank's involvement in financing real estate projects aligns with its longstanding role in supporting the Egyptian economy and the state's urban development goals under Vision 2030.
