‘Insecure' Govinda was cast in Shola Aur Shabnam, Aankhein as he ‘didn't have work', reveals Pahlaj Nihalani
On a podcast with Learn From The Legend, Pahlaj Nihalani shared the story behind casting Govinda in his films. He shared, 'I made four films with Govinda. I was starting a film after Aandhi Toofan, I wanted to repeat Mithun Chakraborty and Shatrughan Sinha in my movie. However, the schedules didn't match for Mithun, and finally Govinda came into the picture.'
The filmmaker revealed that although he didn't like Govinda's look in the photos, it was the actor's talent that convinced him to cast him in Ilzaam. 'I saw his pictures at first and I didn't like it at all. I didn't like his look. He came the next day with his dance video cassette. Break dance was very popular because of Michael Jackson. I asked him about his talents. Then, although I didn't like the face much, I cast him only because of his work (dance, action, etc.). My story had a lot of action, hence I asked him for a day to get back,' he said.
'As an actor, there's still no one as talented as him even today. Although he didn't quite fit the role of an inspector, doctor, or advocate—considering his height and all—he became a star. And once someone becomes a star, you can make them do anything,' Pahlaj added.

Pahlaj Nihalani also shared that he cast Govinda in Shola Aur Shabnam and Aankhen as the actor didn't have work during that time. 'When he didn't have any work, I gave Shola Aur Shabnam to him. He was doing comedy for the first time. Then, when he didn't have any work again, I gave him Aankhen. I changed his entire image. Both Shola Aur Shabnam and Aankhein were opposite. I was actually wanting to cast Dilip Kumar and Mehmood in Aankhen. I moulded him for that role. You will see Dilip Kumar and Mehmood at certain places if you watch the film today,' he revealed.
When asked if the rumours about Govinda's arrogance were true, Pahlaj Nihalani said, 'Govinda was always insecure in everything. His father was a huge hero of Mehboob Khan. He was a producer also, had so many losses. Usne itna dard saaha uske baad, bahut saari cheezein unke haath se nikal gayi, aur struggle karna pada. All those things were built inside him while doing something.'
Pahlaj added that Govinda's main goal was to earn a lot of money, after seeing his father Arun Kumar Ahuja's struggles. 'Usko yeh tha ki paise kisi tarah se ajaayen. He had many responsibilities of his brothers and sisters as well, paison mein uljha rehta tha. He wanted to do everything. Uska attitude aisa hogaya tha. Jab kaam aur pressure bahut tha, he developed a habit of that attitude. Vehmi bhi ho gaya. Yeh saari cheezein usko khaati rahi. Jab nahi chalta aadmi toh sab usko damage karta hai. Otherwise, you won't find an actor like Govinda even after searching,' he concluded.

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Thursday questioned the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over its delay in certifying Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi, a film purportedly based on Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath's life. The court also took note of the fact that the film draws from a published book that has been in the public domain for years without incident. HC pulls up CBFC for delay in certifying film on Yogi Adityanath A division bench of justices Revati Mohite Dere and Dr Neela Gokhale was hearing a petition filed by the film's producers, Samrat Cinematics India Pvt Ltd, challenging the CBFC's refusal to certify the movie. The film is said to be inspired by Shantanu Gupta's 2017 biography of Adityanath, The Monk Who Became Chief Minister. The court issued a notice to the CBFC and directed it to respond by Friday. The petitioners told the court that they first applied for certification on June 5. Under the Cinematograph Act, 1952 and the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024, the board is required to process such applications within a week and schedule a screening within the next 15 days. However, more than a month had passed without any communication, they said. Calling the delay 'arbitrary, unreasonable, and unexplained,' the producers alleged that the CBFC had stalled the process deliberately, despite the film being slated for release on August 1 across over 1,500 cinema halls. They also said they reapplied under the board's 'priority scheme,' paying three times the usual fee, and were given a screening date of July 7—which was later cancelled without any explanation. The producers further alleged that the CBFC had asked them to procure a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Uttar Pradesh chief minister's office (CMO)—a demand they termed 'erroneous and extraneous,' citing no such requirement in the certification rules. 'It is a matter of record that the book which forms the foundation of the film has been officially endorsed by the CMO,' the petition said, adding that the film was a 'truthful, respectful, and inspiring portrayal' of a public figure. The court observed that the censor board could not sit indefinitely on an application, especially after charging priority fees. 'The application has to be decided. You cannot just sit on it,' the bench said. Notably, a similar petition had been disposed of on July 17, after the CBFC told the court that it would take a decision on certification within two days. The producers have now returned to court, alleging continued inaction and seeking relief ahead of the film's scheduled release.

Dhadak Box Office Preview: Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri starrer run time, screen count, advance booking & opening day
After launching Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khattar with Dhadak in 2018, Karan Johar is set for Dhadak 2 with two upcoming talents – Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri. The romantic saga releases on August 1, 2025 and much like the first part is an intense love story set against the backdrop of music. The Shazia Iqbal directorial has been certified U/A by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with an approved run time of 2 hours 26 minutes (146 minutes). The film is seeing an all-India release by Zee Studios in consultation with Dharma Productions, and the partners have strategically opted for a restrained release on about 1000 screens. The release is planned more towards the urban markets, with the hope of a surge over the weekend based on audience feedback. The advance bookings for Dhadak 2 opened on Wednesday evening, and the response has been on the expected lines. The film has sold about 15,000 tickets in the national chains as on Thursday at 7.00 PM and is headed for a closing in the vicinity of 25,000 tickets. The first day business of Dhadak 2 is expected to be in the range of Rs 3.75 crore to Rs 4.25 crore, and the hope is to capitalize from this start and grow over the weekend. Dhadak 2 is a film relying on word of mouth of the audience, and if reports come in its favour, the romantic saga will be looking to show big spikes on Saturday and Sunday to consolidate with good results over the weekend. With romance being the flavour of the season, Dhadak 2 could spring a surprise if reports from the audience come in its favour.
