(Reuters) -Hedra, an AI startup that helps businesses generate lifelike videos, said it has raised $32 million in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz's Infrastructure fund to expand operations and deepen its reach among marketers.
The Series A fundraise valued the company at $200 million, according to a source involved in the deal.
The round brings its total raised funds to $43 million, Hedra said on Thursday.
The AI video space has boomed in the past year, with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI's Sora and Runway's Gen-2 among the models racing to dominate the nascent industry. However, doubts remain over their scalability due to high computing costs and their ability to avoid the "uncanny valley", where near-realistic digital characters trigger discomfort in some viewers.
Founded in 2021, Hedra is hoping to stand out with its Character-3 foundation model that blends text, image and audio to create lifelike digital characters. Businesses can use the technology to create animated mascots or professional spokespersons for their brands.
"Getting over the uncanny valley of compelling performance is the hardest frontier in video, and with our Character-3 foundation model, we're devoted to crossing it," said founder and CEO Michael Lingelbach, a former stage actor.
Hedra currently employs 20 people and plans to triple its workforce to support its growing operations.
The round also saw participation from existing investors, including a16z speedrun, Abstract and Index Ventures.

Malaysia's palm oil stocks rise to highest in nearly two years

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's palm oil stocks rose for a fifth consecutive month in July to their highest level in almost two years as production growth outpaced exports, data from the industry regulator showed on Monday. The rise in inventory in the world's second-biggest producer of the tropical oil could weigh on benchmark Malaysian futures, which were trading near their highest in nearly four months. Palm oil inventories at the end of July rose 4.02% over the month to 2.11 million metric tons, the highest since December 2023, data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) showed. Crude palm oil production was up 7.09% in July from June to 1.81 million tons, the highest since September last year, while palm oil exports increased by 3.82% to 1.31 million tons after a large fall in June, the MPOB said. A Reuters survey had forecast Malaysian inventory at 2.25 million tons, with output seen at 1.83 million tons and exports at 1.3 million tons. Malaysian July exports were capped by aggressive selling at a discount by rival Indonesia, which wanted to ship as much as possible before a higher export duty becomes effective in August, said Tajgir Rahman, general manager, trading and procurement at IFFCO. Exports from Malaysia will rise in August, as Indonesia's move to raise its export tax narrows the discounts that Indonesian shipments had been enjoying over Malaysian supplies, he said. Malaysia's palm oil exports in the first ten days of August rose 23.3% compared to the first ten days of July, cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services said on Sunday. The rise in palm oil stocks is not burdensome for the market, as production in August is underperforming, while exports are picking up, said Anilkumar Bagani, research head of Mumbai-based vegetable oil broker Sunvin Group. - Reuters

Philippine central bank signals August rate cut

MANILA: The Philippine central bank signalled on Monday (Aug 11) it may deliver the first of two remaining interest rate cuts this year at its Aug 28 policy meeting as inflation remained subdued. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli Remolona said it was "quite likely" the bank would lower its key policy rate later this month, reiterating its easing bias to support growth amid global uncertainties and as inflation continues to slow. "Things look good," Remolona told a forum organised by the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines, adding that inflation could fall to 2% this year, the bottom of the BSP's target range. Cooling prices have underpinned domestic demand, with the economy expanding 5.5% in the second quarter, slightly faster than the 5.4% growth in the previous quarter. Annual inflation eased to 0.9% in July, the lowest since October 2019, bringing the year-to-date average to 1.7%. Remolona told Reuters on July 28 the BSP was on track to cut rates two more times in 2025. The key rate now stands at 5.25%, a two-and-a-half-year low. After this month's meeting, the BSP will have two more policy meetings before year-end. - Reuters

Britain's M&S restores click and collect services 15 weeks after systems hacked

FILE PHOTO: Pedestrians walk past the Marble Arch branch of British retailer Marks & Spencer Plc in central London, Britain, May 18, 2025. REUTERS/Carlos Jasso/File Photo LONDON (Reuters) -British retailer Marks & Spencer has resumed taking click and collect orders for clothing after a 15-week hiatus following a cyber hack and data theft. The 141-year-old M&S stopped taking orders through its website and app for clothing and home deliveries and collection from stores on April 25, three days after disclosing it was managing a "cyber incident". It resumed taking online orders for delivery on June 10 but click and collect services, which allow customers to order items online and pick up in stores, had remained suspended. M&S's website said on Monday that click and collect had resumed. The company did not respond immediately to a request for comment. In May, M&S forecast the hacking of its systems would cost it about 300 million pounds ($404 million) in lost operating profit in its 2025/26 financial year, though it hopes to halve the impact through insurance and cost control. As part of its management of the hack and data theft, M&S took other systems offline. That reduced both clothing and food availability in stores, further denting sales. Rivals, such as Next in clothing and Sainsbury's in food, have been beneficiaries. M&S CEO Stuart Machin told investors in early July the group would be over the worst of the fallout from the incident by August. Shares in M&S are down 12% so far this year.
