Kanpur: Minister of fisheries and national president of the Nishad Party Sanjay Kumar Nishad, stated that this river bank is not just the edge of the Ganga, but is a witness to the sacrifices, bravery, and the first spark of freedom of the country by the Nishad community.
"In 1857, Nishad boatmen drowned the British in the Ganga here, shaking the foundations of British rule. In retaliation, hundreds of Nishads were hanged without trial at the Massacre Ghat, and in 1871, the Criminal Tribes Act labelled the Nishad community as 'born criminals,' and humiliated them," said Sanjay Nishad while addressing a gathering in a programme organized in the memory and on the occasion of the Resolution Day of the Nishad community at Satti Chaura Ghat on Friday.
Sanjay Nishad said, "Today, we are fighting our battle through the Constitution, pen, and vote to ensure separate reservations for the Nishad community." He demanded that Satti Chaura and Massacre Ghat be declared as national monuments and that the truth about the Criminal Tribes Act be included in school curriculum, emphasizing that Nishad children should learn about their ancestors' bravery to instil pride and prepare future generations for leadership.

The Nishad community leader detailed various welfare schemes initiated by the Central and the state govts for the upliftment of the fishing community, such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, Mukhya Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, Fishermen Accident Insurance Scheme, Kisan Credit Card, Intensive Fish Farming Aeration System, Nishad Raj Boat Scheme, Mata Suketa Cage System, and Fish Farmer Welfare Fund.
These schemes are being transparently delivered to the community, with pond and reservoir leases being prioritised for the Nishad community, and the government is fully committed to removing illegal encroachments and protecting water resources, he added.
Regarding the Etawah Katha Vachak controversy, the minister condemned the incident as highly reprehensible, and said that the Indian Constitution grants all citizens equal rights to perform and conduct religious rituals, and no caste can be deprived of this.
When asked about the removal of the words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Constitution, he remarked that any constitutional amendment requires a parliamentary majority, questioning the basis on which the Congress had added these words during the Emergency when democracy was nearly suspended. He suggested that there should be a debate in Parliament on this issue, and if the words are deemed necessary by it, they should remain; otherwise, they should be removed.
"In a democracy, no amendment can be made without collective consent of the people and Parliament," he said.

‘We need clarity': UAE fishermen demand clear seasonal bans aligned with neighbouring Gulf states

Emirati fishermen demand clearer fishing ban dates, urging the season to start in early October like neighbouring Gulf states to better plan and protect livelihoods (Representative image) Emirati fishermen are voicing mounting frustration over seasonal fishing bans that they say lack transparency and coordination with neighboring Gulf countries. These concerns were raised in a recent session of the Federal National Council (FNC), where fishermen called on the UAE's Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to better align the country's fishing calendar with that of the wider Gulf region to help sustain both their livelihoods and the nation's local fish supply. FNC member Mohammed Al Kashf questioned the Ministry about the ongoing ban on certain types of fishing—particularly the use of traditional wire traps, known locally as hiyal. According to Al Kashf, fishermen were notified of the bans via SMS messages that failed to provide clear timelines or durations. 'This lack of clarity prevents fishermen from benefitting during the most suitable times of the year,' Al Kashf told the Council. He urged the Ministry to consider 'adjustments that support both fish stock sustainability and the economic wellbeing of Emirati fishermen.' Ministry Responds: Ban Dates Based on Scientific Studies Responding to these concerns, Minister of Climate Change and Environment Amna Al Dahak clarified that the fishing ban period has remained unchanged since 2021, running annually from November 1 to May 13. She said the timeline is informed by ministerial decisions based on scientific research. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like local network access control Esseps Learn More Undo 'These periods are based on studies that aim to ensure the regeneration of fish stocks and protect marine life,' Al Dahak stated during the session. The Minister added that the ministry sends regular notifications to fishermen, including at the start and end of each season, and holds awareness workshops in coordination with the Fishermen's Cooperative Union. Four such workshops were organized this year alone to keep the community updated. 'We work closely with fishermen and regularly hold stakeholder meetings to address their challenges and align on goals,' Al Dahak said, emphasizing that preserving the fishing profession and ensuring its sustainability is a top priority for the ministry. She also noted that there is ongoing coordination with local authorities, as well as joint technical committees at the GCC level, to improve regional consistency in fishing policies. Fishermen Urge for Earlier Season Start, Regional Coordination While Al Kashf welcomed the Ministry's engagement with the fishing community, he said fishermen still face practical challenges, particularly when bans are imposed without prior notice or with reopening dates that remain uncertain. He emphasized that preparations for the fishing season, such as hiring crew members and securing gear and provisions, require both time and financial commitment. 'Veteran fishermen and sea-goers know the right times for the season to start, and the ministry is pushing efforts in the right direction,' Al Kashf acknowledged. 'But there is a clear call from fishermen to begin the season in early October instead, to match neighbouring countries.' The overarching request from the fishing community is clear: implement better communication, timely notifications, and a harmonized fishing calendar that aligns with other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Fishermen argue that such steps would not only make their work more viable but also help preserve fish stocks and the UAE's marine heritage.
