CM ‘voice of community':Sanjay Nishad
Gorakhpur: An awareness rally, led by Uttar Pradesh fisheries minister and NISHAD party chief Sanjay Nishad was taken out in Gorakhpur on Monday. Addressing reporters, Sanjay Nishad made a sharp remark, stating, "Jo Nishad Party ka jhanda uthae wahi mera bhai hai, jo na uthae wahi kasai hai" — equating those not supporting the party with butchers. He further elaborated that individuals from the community who do not chant 'Jai Nishad Raj' or align with the rival political outfits are harming the community's progress, similar to butchers slaughtering animals. Referring to former minister Jamuna Nishad, he claimed that slogans like 'Jai Bhim' and 'Jai Samajwad' had yielded little benefit, emphasizing the need for community solidarity under the NISHAD Party banner. The minister praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath , calling him the "voice of the Nishad community ". He noted that Yogi, even during his tenure as an MP, had raised the demand for granting SC status to the Nishad community, and now, as the CM, the expectations are higher than ever. He alleged that despite a directive from the Registrar General of India (RGI), implementation at the state level remains pending and urged the Bharatiya Janata Party to honour its promise. Highlighting welfare initiatives, he said the fisheries department would extend support to the community members in areas including education, healthcare (even without an Ayushman card), and assistance in marriage.

Centre's caste census move may alter UP's political dynamics
LUCKNOW: The Centre's decision to include caste enumeration in the upcoming census is set to create political ripples in Uttar Pradesh, the country's most politically significant state, by reshaping caste-based alignments that dominate its political landscape. The move is likely to accelerate long-pending demands from BJP allies in the state for a sub-quota within the OBC and SC/ST categories. Parties such as Om Prakash Rajbhar's Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP), Dr Sanjay Nishad's NISHAD Party and Anupriya Patel's Apna Dal (S) have consistently advocated the division of broader caste groups into sub-categories to ensure equitable distribution of reservation benefits. The demand for 'quota within quota' stems from the findings of the Rohini Commission, constituted in 2017 to examine sub-categorisation of OBCs. Headed by Justice G Rohini, retired Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, the four-member panel submitted its report in 2023, recommending a fairer allocation of reservation based on internal disparities among OBC communities. This argument for equitable distribution was previously echoed in Uttar Pradesh when the state government set up a social justice committee under retired judge Justice Raghvendra Kumar. The committee, in its 2018 report, recommended dividing OBCs into three groups: backward (12 sub-castes), more backward (59 sub-castes) and most backward (79 sub-castes). Similarly, the Dalits were also split into three groups: Dalit (4 sub-castes), Ati Dalit (31) and Maha Dalit (46).

Lucknow: Nishad Party plans to contest the Karchhana, Bara, and Handia assembly seats in Prayagraj in the 2027 UP assembly elections, said party president and UP fisheries minister Sanjay Nishad. It is meant to drum up public support for reservation for all the sub-castes of Nishads in the state under the SC category. "The yatra was divided into four phases. Prayagraj is the last leg of it," said the minister. After moving through Pratapgarh, Mirzapur, Bhadohi, and Sonbhadra, it will conclude in Lucknow. The alliance between BJP and Nishad Party happened for the welfare of Nishads and to get them reservation under the SC category, he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scarlett Johansson, 40, Shows Off Her Real Size In A New Vacation Photos 33 Bridges Undo Meanwhile, the party claimed that the aim of the 'yatra' is also to know how well the welfare schemes of the govt were implemented at the ground level through direct communication with the beneficiaries. The party has also tried connecting with backward castes, other than Nishads, to bring them within the fold of the welfare schemes of the centre and the state, besides publicising the schemes that the state govt launched for the fishermen communities.

India: 15 dead in stampede at Kumbh Mela, world's largest religious gathering
A stampede at the world's largest religious gathering in India killed at least 15 people with many more injured, a doctor at the Kumbh Mela festival told AFP Wednesday. Deadly crowd crushes are a notorious feature of Indian religious festivals and the Kumbh Mela, with its unfathomable throngs of devotees, already had a grim track record before the latest incident in the early hours of the morning. The six-week festival is the single biggest milestone on the Hindu religious calendar, and millions of people had been expected to participate in a sacred day of ritual bathing on Wednesday. "At least 15 people have died for now. Others are being treated," said the doctor at the festival site in Prayagraj, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to talk to media. Rescue teams were seen working with pilgrims to carry victims away from the site of the accident over ground strewn with clothes, shoes and other discarded belongings. Police officers moved through the area carrying stretchers bearing the bodies of victims draped with thick blankets. Dozens of relatives were anxiously waiting for news outside a large tent serving as a purpose-built hospital for the festival around one kilometre from the accident. Wednesday marks one of the holiest days in the festival, when saffron-clad holy men were due to lead millions into a procession of sin-cleansing ritual bathing at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. But instead officials were strolling the festival site with loudhailers urging pilgrims to keep away from the waterways. "We humbly request all devotees do not come to the main bathing spot," said one festival staffer, his voice crackling through his megaphone. "Please cooperate with security personnel." Numerous pilgrims decided to make an early exit from the festival. "I heard the news and saw the bathing site," attendee Sanjay Nishad told AFP. "My family got scared, so we're leaving." Local government official Akanksha Rana told an Indian news agency that the stampede began after the collapse of some crowd control barriers. Pilgrim Malti Pandey told AFP that he was on his way to bathe in the river along a barricaded walking route when the stampede began. "Suddenly a crowd started pushing and many people were crushed," the 42-year-old said. The Kumbh Mela is rooted in Hindu mythology, a battle between deities and demons for control of a pitcher containing the nectar of immortality. Organisers have likened the scale of this year's festival to that of a temporary country, forecasting up to 400 million pilgrims to visit before the final day on February 26. Mindful of the risk of deadly crowd accidents, police this year installed hundreds of cameras at the festival site and on roads leading to the sprawling encampment, mounted on poles and a fleet of overhead drones. The surveillance network is fed into a sophisticated command and control centre that is meant to alert staff if sections of the crowd get so concentrated that they pose a safety threat. More than 400 people died after being trampled or drowned at the Kumbh Mela on a single day of the festival in 1954, one of the largest tolls in a crowd-related disaster globally. Another 36 people were crushed to death in 2013, the last time the festival was staged in the northern city of Prayagraj.
