‘If Nishads don't get SC quota soon, BJP may face difficulties in 2027 polls': UP Minister
The state Fisheries Minister, who is also the NISHAD Party chief, said the BJP should fulfil the long-pending demand soon or it may face 'difficulties' in the 2027 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
The Nishads, a boating and fishing community, are currently counted among the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the state.
'The thing is that the BJP has found solutions to all difficult issues, be it Article 370 or 10 per cent upper caste reservation (for the economically backward in general category) even when it was not promised in the Constitution, women reservation and even on the topic of faith i.e. construction of Ram Temple. So what is keeping it from fulfilling its promise to the fishermen community?' said Nishad.
The minister said the BJP had promised SC reservation to Nishad sub-castes because of which he aligned with it but now it is becoming difficult for him to convince his community about the long delay despite being in the government.
'We are only part of the government, that is all. Actual decision-making lies with the BJP, which had come out with its separate vision for the Nishad community…,' he said.
'BJP yahi kehke layi thi, SP aur BSP ne galat kiya. Par jo Bhagwan ko paar utarne wale hain, weh apna hissa mang rahe hain. Hum jawab nahin de pa rahe hain (The BJP had brought us along saying that the SP and BSP did wrong. But now the community which helped Lord [Ram] is asking for its rights, and we are unable to answer them),' said Nishad, who has for long been raising the demand for SC reservation for 17 sub-castes of the community.
The delay in giving SC quota to the Nishads, Sanjay Nishad said, had resulted in the shifting of votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as the community fell for the 'false promises of the SP'. And if this continued, it would make things difficult for the BJP and allies in the next Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, he said.
'The Nishad community constitutes 18 per cent of Uttar Pradesh. They voted for us in 2019 on this promise. But in 2024, the INDIA bloc was able to take their votes with false promises and if this continues then the community would distance itself,' he said. 'BJP jaldi ise door kare nahi to 2027 mein mushkil ho sakta hai (The BJP should resolve this soon or there might be difficulties in 2027).'
In the 2022 Assembly elections, the NISHAD party, in alliance with BJP, was able to win six Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh but failed to win a single seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The Nishad community is primarily found in regions alongside rivers, especially in eastern and central Uttar Pradesh, including areas surrounding Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, and Varanasi, among others.

End ‘inhuman' hand-pulled rickshaws in Matheran: SC
The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered immediate phasing out of hand-driven rickshaws in Maharashtra's hill town of Matheran within six months, observing that continuation of such an inhuman practice in a developing country like India violates human dignity and betrays the constitutional guarantee of social and economic justice to all citizens. End 'inhuman' hand-pulled rickshaws in Matheran: SC Dealing with an issue concerning plying of e-rickshaws in Matheran, one of the few towns in the country where vehicular traffic is prohibited, the top court was informed that to service the transportation needs of about 8 lakh tourists visiting the hill station annually and over 4,000 residents living in the town, hand-driven rickshaws are still in vogue. The bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan R Gavai said, 'Continuing such practice even after 78 years of independence and after 75 years of the Constitution being enacted promising social and economic justice to its citizens, would be betraying the promise given by the people of India to themselves.' Granting six months for the state to phase out hand-rickshaw pullers and in the meantime, framing a scheme for their rehabilitation, the court further held, 'We direct the state to forthwith stop plying of hand-held rickshaws in a phased manner and in any case within six months.' The court noted that persons pulling hand-held rickshaws are victims of circumstances who have no alternate source of livelihood and such practices were held to be against the goal of social justice by the top court in a 1980 decision in Azad Rickshaw Pullers union v State of Punjab. 'It is really unfortunate that after 45 years of the decision of this court, the inhuman practice of a human being pulling another human being is still prevalent in the town of Matheran…Permitting such an inhuman practice which is against the basic concept of human dignity in a country like India, which is a developing country, belittles the constitutional promise of social and economic justice,' the bench held. The court was conscious that ending this practice will entail depriving them of their source of livelihood. The court noted that with advancement of technology, e-rickshaws are now available which are eco-friendly and operate on batteries. The court directed the Maharashtra government that while evolving a scheme for rehabilitating the hand-held drivers, the state must consider a novel scheme launched by Gujarat government in Kevadia, where e-rickshaw licenses on hire has been provided to local Adivasi women who ferry tourists visiting the town to witness the Statue of Unity - a massive 600-feet statue of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel, and the Sardar Sarovar dam. The court asked the state to consider giving priority to hand-held rickshaw pullers in getting the licenses for e-rickshaws and also consider tribal women among other needy persons in and around Matheran. The court was assisted in passing the order by senior advocate K Parmeshwar assisting the court as amicus curiae who insisted that only 20 e-rickshaws should be permitted for now. The court further permitted laying of paver blocks on the main city road from Kasturi Naka to Shivaji Statue (4-km long stretch) without any concrete bedding to ensure the roads are motorable by rickshaws, horse carts even during monsoons. The hand-held rickshaw pullers and horse-cart pullers were represented by senior advocate Shyam Divan and advocate Nina Nariman who took the court through the adverse effects of concreting the roads. However, the court permitted no paver blocks on the internal town roads and the trekking route. The court allowed the state to consider sponsoring the e-rickshaw scheme through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative or any other scheme but clarified that non-availability of funds will not be treated as an excuse for not implementing the scheme. Matheran located in the Western Ghats was declared an eco-sensitive zone by the Centre in 2003 and is home to several species of flora and fauna including the bonnet macaque, Hanuman langur, Malabar giant squirrel, and barking deer among others.

SP insulted Lord Ganesh, damaged education system: Yogi
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday criticised the Samajwadi Party's 'PDA Pathshala', calling it an attempt to dismantle the education system. The PDA Pathshala is a campaign launched by SP workers in protest against the Uttar Pradesh government's school pairing policy. He accused the SP of even insulting Lord Ganesh and damaging the state's education system. Recalling an incident from the time of Kalyan Singh's government, he said the SP had opposed teaching 'G for Ganesh' to children. He said that while the SP had destroyed educational institutions, his government, in line with the National Education Policy, is establishing state-of-the-art educational centres like Atal Residential Schools and Mukhyamantri Abhyudaya Schools. Adityanath said that the SP, which now pretends to be concerned over backward and marginalised groups, had in the past shown blatant disregard for education. The chief minister termed the BJP's victory in the Kundarki by-election in November 2024 as the people of Moradabad's response to the divisive politics of the SP and Congress. He said that the public chose satisfaction over appeasement, causing the SP-Congress candidates to lose their security deposits. The chief minister, during the one-day visit to Moradabad, inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 87 development projects worth ₹1,172 crore. He called the inauguration of 60 projects worth ₹640 crore and the foundation stone laying for 27 projects worth ₹532 crore, a gift to Moradabad, symbolising a new Moradabad and a new Uttar Pradesh. He also inaugurated an Atal Residential School built at a cost of ₹79 crore. He highlighted the transparent and purposeful use of the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) fund as directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He accused previous governments of turning this fund into a source of corruption and embezzlement, but affirmed that it is now being used for the education of labourers' children. The chief minister described the SP's tenure as a period of anarchy and mafia rule, alleging that their agenda was 'one district, one mafia,' and riots were instigated in every district. He also accused the SP of supporting terrorists. He said those who once rose to power through the politics of appeasement now find themselves directionless. 'Such people could neither stand with society nor with future generations,' he said, adding that BJP's schemes are based on 'santushti' (satisfaction), not 'tushtikaran' (appeasement), and aim to reach every citizen without any discrimination. During the event, he extended greetings to the people for Rakshabandhan, Krishna Janmashtami and Independence Day. He said while the Samajwadi Party government had attempted to ban festivals like Krishna Janmashtami, the current 'double-engine' government would celebrate the festival with grandeur across Uttar Pradesh. He declared that the festival would be enthusiastically organised at every police station and training institute. Connecting Raksha Bandhan with the anniversary of the Kakori Train Action on August 9, Adityanath paid tribute to freedom fighters Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqullah Khan, Thakur Roshan Singh, Rajendra Prasad Lahiri, and Chandrashekhar Azad. The CM noted that Moradabad, once known for anarchy and hooliganism, is now famous for its brass items under the 'One District, One Product' (ODOP) scheme. During his visit, the chief minister accepted a poem titled 'Mera Rajya, Pyara Rajya' written in Braille by a visually impaired student Kumari Usha and blessed her.
