
McDonald's posts better-than-expected sales as chicken strips, Minecraft meal drive traffic
The Chicago burger giant said Wednesday its revenue rose 5% to $6.8 billion in the April-June period. That was higher than the $6.7 billion Wall Street forecast, according analysts polled by FactSet.
Same-store sales, or sales at locations open at least a year, jumped nearly 4%. Analysts had predicted a 1% decline.
McDonald's shares rose 3% in premarket trading Wednesday.
It was a far different story than the first quarter, when U.S. and global same-store sales slumped and McDonald's said lower- and middle-income consumers were cutting back on fast food.
But a meal tied to 'A Minecraft Movie,' which was offered in 100 countries starting in April, drove customers back to stores. McDonald's said it sold out of its collectible figures in less than two weeks.
McDonald's new McCrispy chicken strips also boosted customer traffic after they were added to the menu in May.
Some rivals didn't fare as well in April-June period. Yum Brands, the parent company of KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, reported lower-than-expected revenue on Tuesday and said KFC's same-store sales dropped 5% in the U.S. And last month, Chipotle lowered its full-year same-store sales guidance after a disappointing second quarter that saw same-store sales fall 4%.
McDonald's net income rose 11% to $2.25 billion in the second quarter. Adjusted for restructuring charges and other one-time items, the company earned $3.14 per share. That was in line with Wall Street's forecast.

Well, that 'week or so' turned into about an hour. Shortly after that Digest hit your inbox, Trump confirmed plans for a 100% tariff on imported semiconductors, with one big caveat – companies that manufacture chips in the U.S., or commit to doing so, will be exempt. Apple's CEO Tim Cook stood by Trump during the announcement after Apple pledged an additional $100 billion in U.S. investment (bringing its total domestic commitment to about $600 billion) and received that exemption. So, what does this mean? And what's the investment step? The headline '100% chip tariff' is dramatic. But the actual policy functions more like a policy lever than a full‑blown blockade. This isn't a death knell to the overall AI/semiconductor story or AI profits (which is why the tech sector isn't plummeting as I write Thursday). But neither is it a nothingburger. As to how to respond, here are three guidelines: Prioritize companies investing in U.S. manufacturing – firms such as TSMC, Samsung, Nvidia, and GlobalFoundries are expanding their U.S. operations and are in a good position to benefit from exemptions Maintain your core AI holdings – the new tariffs don't undermine long-term demand for semiconductors. Hold your top-tier AI plays Look past the headlines for long-term opportunity – if more drama and downward volatility is ahead of us, look for favorable entry points on AI/semi leaders selling off in sympathy Bottom line: Though the headlines sound frightening, this is ultimately bullish for well‑positioned AI players. Yesterday, McDonald's beat earnings expectations, but… While Wall Street applauded the numbers, the company's tone was cautious for one main reason… Weakness among low-income consumers. From CEO Chris Kempczinski: Reengaging the low-income consumer is critical, as they typically visit our restaurants more frequently than middle- and high-income consumers. This bifurcated consumer base is why we remain cautious about the overall near-term health of the U.S. consumer. Longtime Digest readers will recognize this 'bifurcated consumer base' and recall the term we've used within this broader conversation: the 'Technochasm.' There's a growing divide today between the 'haves' and 'have nots' – both in the market and in our society. One of the most influential factors driving this growing divide is wealth generated from investments in cutting-edge technology and artificial intelligence, something our experts have coined, 'The Technochasm.' This bifurcation – strength from higher earners, fragility among lower-income households – is becoming a recurring theme in earnings reports across industries. And it's a valuable clue into the true health of the U.S. consumer. This is especially important in the wake of last Friday's jobs report – the weakest in over a year – and Tuesday's ISM data, which caused legendary investor Louis Navellier to say: We are teetering on a recession here, folks, and I don't like to use that R word, but that's what's happening. Can high-income earners spend us out of a recession? I've been a part of some interesting conversations with InvestorPlace analysts that tackle whether higher-income consumers can spend enough to offset the tightening we're seeing from lower-income households. There's some evidence suggesting this has been happening. For example, earlier this year, credit card data showed that upper-income households were spending regularly, particularly on experiences like travel, fine dining, and entertainment. Here's CNBC from the spring: Lower-income earners are reining in their transactions to focus on essentials, while the wealthy continue to spend freely on perks including dining out and luxury travel, according to first-quarter results from U.S. credit card lenders… For instance, at Synchrony, which provides store cards for retail brands including Lowe's and T.J. Maxx, spending fell 4% in the first three months of the year… That compares to a 6% spending jump at American Express and a similar rise at JPMorgan Chase, both of which cater to wealthier users with higher credit scores than Synchrony. AmEx said its customers spent 7% more on dining and 11% more on first class and business class airfare than a year earlier. These consumers are benefiting from rising asset values, higher interest income, and – thanks to the AI boom – significant gains in tech-heavy investment portfolios. But we're starting to see signs of fatigue Let's jump to Fortune from last week: More than half (58%) of six-figure earners no longer feel financially successful, according to a recent report from Clarify Capital… More than seven in 10 of these high earners are now being forced to shop at discount grocery chains to save cash. Around 74% also say they're cutting back on dining out, 54% are skimping out on entertainment, 51% are getting thrifty with buying clothes, 49% are scaling back their subscriptions, and 49% are spending less on travel… About 85% of six-figure workers say they feel stressed and anxious due to increased living costs. Fortune goes on to report that the delinquency rate among high-income borrowers has surged 130% over the last two years. As to the investment implications, there are many ways we can take this Let's briefly walk through four options. Invest in the companies at the forefront of the technologies that will continue to explode the Technochasm Clearly, that's AI. But as we've been profiling here in the Digest, the latest evolution is 'Physical AI' (think robots/humanoids). On Monday through Wednesday, we brought you interviews from Louis Navellier, Eric Fry, and Luke Lango detailing this opportunity. And they just released a new portfolio of Physical AI leaders in their AI Revolution Portfolio investment service. Regardless of how you do it, giving your portfolio at least some exposure to cutting-edge AI is imperative. Focus on fundamentally superior companies that are growing their earnings, despite a broader consumer slowdown This has been the cornerstone of Louis' market approach for decades. Earlier this week, in the same Flash Alert market update in which Louis warned of a potential recession, he also congratulated his Growth Investor subscribers on three earnings wins from earlier this week. Here's how those stocks have performed since Tuesday: AXON: +13% KGC: +11% PLTR: +9% As Louis loves to say: 'earnings are working.' Trade companies successfully catering to lower-income Americans Lower-income shoppers are still buying from certain retailers, causing Wall Street to push up prices. Our hypergrowth expert Luke Lango is in one such retailer in Breakout Trader – Dollar Tree (DLTR). After opening the trade in late-April, they're sitting on 31% gains. These lower-income trades aren't necessarily 'hold forever' stocks, but for however long cost-conscious shoppers help drive their prices higher, stick with bullish momentum. Refresh yourself on the valuations of every stock you own If even higher-income consumers are beginning to pull back, earnings are likely to be next. And when earnings fall, eventually, stock prices do too – especially those priced for perfection. So, refamiliarize yourself with the valuation of each stock you hold. Make sure you're comfortable. Coming full circle to McDonald's… Its earnings report is a snapshot of the Technochasm in action. Yes, certain consumers are still spending. But for many – especially at the lower end of the income spectrum – the strain is becoming undeniable. Bottom line: When McDonald's says it's having to 'reengage' its most loyal customers through cheaper meals, we should take notice. That's a macro warning. Checking in on Jonathan Rose's NioCorp trade Back in July, we put a new speculative trade on your radar – NioCorp Developments (NB) – thanks to a heads-up from veteran trader Jonathan Rose. Jonathan had just closed a 700% win on rare earth play MP Materials. And he had recently recommended a trade on NB as another early-stage name riding the same wave: U.S. demand for critical minerals tied to defense, energy, and the AI boom. Better still, even higher prices appear on the way… A major new catalyst for growth On Tuesday, we learned that the U.S. Department of Defense has awarded up to $10 million to NioCorp's Elk Creek Resources unit to support its domestic production of scandium – a rare earth metal critical for advance defense and aerospace systems. This is a big deal. Virtually the entire global scandium supply comes from China, Russia, and Ukraine. The U.S. hasn't mined scandium since 1969 – until now. NioCorp's Elk Creek project is also sitting on high-value niobium and titanium, both essential for hypersonic missiles and other military applications. The company already has binding long-term deals in place for 75% of its planned niobium output, and it just inked its largest scandium deal ever. From CEO Mark Smith: This is a grant, not an investment. It shows strong U.S. government backing and how critical niobium and scandium are for defense. In short, this is no longer just a speculative story; it's becoming big business, with real government backing. Now that Emma Myers is on one of the hottest shows around, the 'Wednesday' star gets a kick out of someone bringing up her first TV role. On a 2010 episode of the Florida-based police procedural 'The Glades,' Myers played the daughter of a NASA mission specialist caught up in a murder investigation. The thing is, there was no acting involved – instead, she showed up, smiling, in multiple family photos. 'They put out like a cattle call for kids,' says the Orlando native, 23. Edited and condensed for clarity. Q: How do you feel both you and Enid have grown since the first "Wednesday" season? Emma Myers: I mirror Enid a bit in her journey. I've definitely gained confidence in myself in the past three years. No love triangles for me (in real life), thank goodness (laughs). She's a bit more headstrong and she goes out and gets what she wants. I love to stay true to the original old Enid, but also just bringing in that subtle strength behind her as well. She and Wednesday have this unspoken understanding. They have a sense of comfort in one another that Wednesday probably wouldn't admit to but Enid certainly would. Do you get a say in Enid's wardrobe or what gets put in her half of their dorm room? Definitely. If I'm in a fitting, I'll always pick out my favorite ones or just say that I don't like something and they'll nix it. But in Season 2, I'm the one who decided that haircut. I said, 'If we're going to make her a bit more edgy and stuff, this is a fun haircut to give her.' It's great to have that sort of say and have people trust you about it. But Enid doesn't transform as much as one would expect from a werewolf. Do you wish you wolfed out on the show more? If you overdo the wolfing-out, the significance of it lessens a lot. The amount that she wolfs out is actually fine. Also, just from an actor's perspective, it's humiliating to do the beginning of wolfing out, so I'm glad that I only had to do it as many times as I've had to. Your accent is spot-on as Pip in "Good Girl's Guide." Does anybody ever think you're actually a Brit? I get it sometimes, but then also sometimes I get people telling me that it was too exaggerated. I really don't know what to think, to be honest with you. Season 1, I didn't get time to practice it. I was thrown into the role two weeks before we started shooting. This next season that we just finished, I had a lot more time to prep, so I hope it pleases the audience this time. Congrats on that Favorite Butt-Kicker Kids' Choice Award for 'Minecraft.' Where do you keep your trophy? I haven't been home since I won. I don't even know if they've sent me one. If I don't have one, I would like one because I feel like I deserve one! Texas Roadhouse's mixed results capture the conundrum this stock has become
Texas Roadhouse on Thursday evening reported mixed second-quarter results as elevated beef prices weighed on profitability. Still, the company posted strong comparable sales and said the ongoing third quarter was off to a great start, offsetting some fears around higher input prices. Revenue in the quarter ended July 1 increased 12.8% year over year to $1.51 billion, exceeding the LSEG-complied Wall Street consensus estimate of $1.50 billion. Earnings per share (EPS) increased 4% on an annual basis to $1.86, missing expectations of $1.91, LSEG data showed. Shares were down a little more than 1% in extended trading Thursday. The stock has been drifting lower this summer, closing the regular session down 7.4% from its late May high of the year. Bottom line Texas Roadhouse is executing on what it can control – creating an enjoyable environment and offering full menus at affordable prices – and it's showing within the results. When the restaurant chain reported Q1 results in early May, management said same-store sales growth for the second quarter were tracking at 5%. This is key restaurant industry metric is also called comparable sales, or comps. We were pleased to see that the 5% growth rate not only sustained through the quarter, but improved a little further. What a difference the weather can make. By month, comparable sales, a key restaurant industry metric, increased 4.3% in April, 7.2% in May, and 5.8% in June. Companywide, same-store sales increased 5.8% in the quarter, mostly driven by an increase in customer traffic — a good sign. This result beat the consensus of 5.3%, according to FactSet. Even better, these positive trends continued early into the third quarter, with comparable sales up 5.3% through the first five weeks, beating the consensus estimate of about 5%. This strong rate includes a negative 60 basis point pressure from the calendar shift of the Fourth of July. Texas Roadhouse Why we own it: Texas Roadhouse is a fast-casual steak chain that offers quality food at an affordable price in a fun atmosphere, creating one of the more compelling value propositions for consumers in the full-service dining category. A substantial majority company's stores are company-owned stores, with only a small proportion as franchise locations. Competitors: Darden (Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse), Brinker (Chili's and Maggiano's), Bloomin' Brands (Outback, Carrabbas Italian Grill, BonefishGrill) Portfolio weighting: 2.3% Most recent buy: April 9, 2025 Initiated: Feb. 4, 2025 Usually, strong traffic and comparable sales performance translate to operating leverage, margin expansion, and earnings per share growth. But out of the company's control is beef inflation. This headwind weighed on the second-quarter results and is expected to be even worse in the third quarter. The company has some counterbalances in its disposal, including raising menu prices and labor inflation is coming in a little bit better than expected. On the call, CEO Jerry Morgan said the company plans to raise prices by 1.7% at the beginning of the fourth quarter. "We feel confident this is the right level of pricing to maintain our everyday value while offsetting some of the inflationary pressures we are facing," he said. We are once again torn on Texas Roadhouse. The continued traffic-driven comps are proof that the brand is loved and the concept works wherever they open up a new location – and the company is doing plenty of it. The consumer may get more "picky" and "choosy" in the back half of the year, but Texas Roadhouse is a sensible place to flock to get great bang for one's buck. However, beef prices are everything for this steakhouse chain, and even with the strong comps, we probably won't see the big stock breakout we've been waiting for until prices fall. Tight cattle supplies in the U.S. have driven beef costs up in recent years. On Thursday, cattle futures traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange hit another record high. That's our current view. We remain optimistic about the future, supported by strong traffic trends, ongoing franchise acquisitions, and growth from new store openings. However, commodity pressures remain a headwind, which is why we're maintaining our hold-equivalent 2 rating and refraining from buying the stock until we see a more attractive entry point. Commentary The better than expected comparable sales growth of 5.8% was driven by a 4% increase in traffic and a 1.8% increase in the average check. Management spent some time on the earnings call walking through some of the mix dynamics— an industry term for the items sold — impacting check levels. The alcohol category continues to be a drag, a sign that people are drinking less when they are dining out. This is a society-wide trend. Introducing nonalcoholic cocktails, often called mocktails, to the menu has been one way the company has addressed the weakness in alcohol. On the entree side, management called out guests trading up to either bigger steaks or ordering steak more often as opposed to other dishes like chicken. During the quarter, Texas Roadhouse opened four-company owned restaurants, including two Bubba's 33 locations, and one franchise restaurant. Management said it's on track to open approximately 30 company-owned restaurants this year and could do a little more than that next year due to plans to step up growth for Bubba's 33, its sports-bar chain with 52 locations currently. Additionally, Texas Roadhouse completed the acquisition of three franchise restaurants, bringing its year-to-date total to 17. Texas Roadhouse said it has plans in place to acquire eight domestic franchise restaurants in the coming quarters, including its five remaining franchised locations in California. The company buys back these franchised locations from time to time, and we generally think these are a good use of cash. Bringing franchised locations under the corporate umbrella gives the company more control over everything in its restaurants and typically leads to stronger operating results. As for cash returns to shareholders, the company bought back $9.8 million worth of stock in the quarter. That's a step down from the $50.2 million worth of shares repurchased in the first quarter. Guidance As mentioned earlier, Texas Roadhouse comparable sales at company-owned restaurants increased 5.3% year over year through the first five weeks of the third quarter. For 2025, management reaffirmed most of its outlook. It continues to expect positive comp sales growth, including the benefit of menu price actions. It also continues to expect capital expenditures totaling $400 million and so-called store week growth of 5% Store week growth is a way to measure both new store openings and franchise acquisitions. However, the company now expects commodity cost inflation to be approximately 5%, which is up from last quarter's view of 4%. This is obviously disappointing to see but it's not a complete surprise since beef prices are on the rise. Partially offsetting the worsening commodity costs is a better view on wage and labor inflation. Management now sees that increasing 4%, which is the low end of its previous guidance range of 4% to 5%.
