Public Bank and DBP reignite Hadiah Bahasa to champion national language
PUBLIC BANK marked a historic moment with the official launch of the Hadiah Bahasa Public Bank – Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka 2025, a prestigious national language award.
In collaboration with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), the aim is to inspire professionals to continue producing quality literary works in the national language, to foster a reading and reference culture while recognising outstanding national language works for their linguistic and intellectual merit.
This initiative also encourages students at all education levels, from primary to tertiary, to produce high-quality work in the national language.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim whose attendance signifies the government's strong and unwavering support for initiatives that uplift the national language.
Present at the official launch were Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh, Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Board of Governors chairman Datuk Dr Anwar Ridhwan, and Public Bank chief executive officer and managing director Tan Sri Tay Ah Lek.
Public Bank deputy chief executive officer Datuk Sulaiman Abdul Manap highlighted in his speech that Public Bank has long believed that language is more than just a means of communication; it symbolises national identity, is a vessel of culture, and is a foundation of unity.
He added that Public Bank proudly embarked on a new chapter, Hadiah Bahasa Public Bank Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.
This collaboration continues the bank's legacy of supporting language development and reaffirms their shared vision with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka to elevate the national language.
'Hadiah Bahasa is not something new to us at Public Bank. As early as 1984, inspired by our founder, the late Tan Sri Dr Teh Hong Piow who aspired to support the nation in elevating the status of the national language, Public Bank launched the inaugural edition of Hadiah Bahasa in collaboration with the Linguistic Society of Malaysia,' said Sulaiman.
After a 27-year hiatus, Public Bank enters a new chapter through its collaboration with DBP, an institution entrusted with developing and enriching the national language.
This revival reflects Public Bank's deep-rooted commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the realm of language and literature.
It also underscores the bank's belief that true national progress lies in economic gains and our contributions toward cultivating a knowledgeable, cultured, and forward-thinking society.

In a statement issued today after chairing the Special Coordination Meeting for National TVET Day 2025, the Deputy Prime Minister said the celebration brings together broad participation from various government agencies, TVET institutions, industries and the general public, aiming for a direct impact on human capital development and employment opportunities. The three-day event will begin tomorrow at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officially launch it on Thursday. 'The official launch on June 12 is expected to include several strategic announcements related to the agenda of strengthening national TVET. Key focus areas will include efforts to encourage wider participation of TVET graduates in high-impact entrepreneurship sectors, in line with current economic needs. 'This step is hoped to further strengthen TVET's role as a driver of growth in high-potential sectors,' said Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development. With the theme "TVET: The Career of Choice", he said the celebration symbolises the MADANI government's commitment to making TVET a core pillar of national development and reinforces its dedication to mainstreaming the skills pathway as part of the country's progressive, inclusive and sustainable Malaysia MADANI aspirations. He said the event will be implemented comprehensively and with high impact, featuring various inclusive, interactive and strategic activities aimed at bringing the public closer to the world of TVET. According to him, the National TVET Day 2025 celebration will consist of four main segments, including the TVET Convention Hub, TVET Job Fair, and TVET Challenge. 'The celebration is expected to take place in a positive atmosphere, with growing public interest in the skills pathway,' he said.

Malaysia, Poland seek strengthened economic, trade ties
KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia is seeking strengthened economic and trade ties with Poland while reaffirming the importance of free and open trade, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Polish President Andrzej Duda said here on Tuesday. They reaffirmed the importance of adhering to internationally accepted trade norms and multilateral engagement and cooperation, as this would be mutually beneficial, the leaders said in a joint statement during Duda's official visit to Malaysia from June 9 to 11. "The leaders reiterated their unwavering commitment to open and inclusive trade and a fair, rules-based international trading system. They strongly reaffirmed their support for the swift advancement of the Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement (MEUFTA) negotiations and stressed the importance of concluding the agreement at the earliest opportunity," they said. "Both sides agreed to promote balanced trade by reducing economic barriers, enhancing consultation mechanisms between relevant ministries, and fostering collaboration amongst business communities," they said, adding that friendly bilateral cooperation will facilitate cooperation in a number of new and emerging fields such as the digitalization of public services, green transition, particularly the hydrogen economy and renewable energy and the maritime economy. Anwar and Duda also agreed to cooperate on security matters, including enhancing the exchange of experiences and coordination in combating crime, including organized and international crime. Poland is Malaysia's important trading partner among EU member states. Malaysia's main exports to Poland include electrical and electronic products, rubber products and machinery, while main imports from Poland consist of machinery, equipment and spare parts, electrical and electronic products, and transport equipment.

Govt committed to increase women-owned companies
KUALA LUMPUR: The percentage of women-owned companies in Malaysia are still low compared to other ASEAN countries, at about 20 per cent or 210,000 companies out of all enterprises in the country. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government through the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) would strive to increase the percentage through various new programmes and policies. 'In helping women access overseas markets more effectively, the government is committed to providing trade facilities such as MADANI Digital Trade, Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) and also trade missions to various countries,' he said during the opening ceremony of the Women in Export (WiEX) Forum 2025 today. Tengku Zafrul said the initiative implemented was open to women entrepreneurs who wanted to explore international markets, including emerging markets such as West Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe, which have high demand for Malaysian products. 'MATRADE also constantly monitors the participation of female entrepreneurs in international exhibitions and overseas trade missions so that women can become competitive exporters on the international stage,' he said. Meanwhile, MATRADE chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the participation of Asian women in the economy, comprising only 30 to 35 per cent, shows that there are still untapped economic opportunities. 'Therefore, to assist women-owned companies in the export market, MATRADE has allocated 40 per cent of the RM14.89 million in export grants to 6,711 women-owned companies,' he said at the event. Regarding the organisation of WiEX, he said the forum was important as a meeting place to empower women in the export ecosystem and, by 2026, the forum would be known as the Women International Exporters Expo. 'The WiEX Forum has become the perfect platform to celebrate and recognise women entrepreneurs who want to make a name for themselves in the international arena. All the knowledge, inspiration and strategies shared today are valuable gifts that can guide their respective journeys,' he said. Therefore, Reezal Merican said MATRADE has launched an e-directory that serves as a bridge connecting products and services provided by women-owned companies. 'This platform will showcase to the world the great products and services produced by Malaysian women. It will facilitate business collaboration, build international networks and, most importantly, provide direct access to global markets. 'This initiative is in line with the National Women's Policy 2025-2030 and sustainable development goals, demonstrating the government's unwavering commitment to empowering women in the trade sector,' he added. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, chairman of the Umno Malaysia Women's and Family Affairs Council (HAWA) Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and MATRADE chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz.
