Speaker scolds MPs for rowdy show before schoolchildren

KUALA LUMPUR : Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul chastised MPs after a shouting match during the debate today, reminding them that schoolchildren in the gallery were watching their bad behaviour.
The ruckus began when Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar) criticised a speech by Abdul Hadi Awang (PN-Marang) on the 13th Malaysia Plan, saying that it lacked policy points.
He singled out a remark in which Hadi had blamed Pakatan Harapan, DAP and other parties for Kuala Lumpur's problems, calling it irrelevant to the document.
Several PAS MPs, including Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) and Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang), jeered in response.
RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) tried to raise a point of order but was drowned out by shouts and insults aimed at his party, DAP. One of the opposition MPs was heard saying 'Wherever DAP is in administration, there are problems.'
Rayer subsequently asked if they would accept him calling PAS 'Parti Ajaran Sesat', prompting further uproar.
Suhaizan Kayat (PH-Pulai), who was standing in to chair proceedings, struggled to restore order before Johari rushed in from his chambers and issued the MPs a sharp rebuke.
'There are schoolchildren here before us. From my chamber, I could hear insults and foul words. If we want this nation to progress, leaders must progress. Not like this,' Johari said.
As Johari spoke, some opposition MPs staged a walkout, further drawing his ire.
He reminded both sides, each with experience in government, to respect senior leaders and maintain civility during debates.
Rayer later said that two PAS MPs had asked him to 'come out for a fight' before exiting the Dewan Rakyat.
Johari said he would review the Hansard and surveillance cameras near the exit before making a ruling on the ruckus tomorrow.

Detained teacher put up TikTok ‘to make content' about Zara Qairina, says Saifuddin Naution

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained a teacher who produced a TikTok video claiming Zara Qairina Mahathir was killed by being put into a washing machine, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail reveals. 'When questioned, the English teacher said it was just to 'make content'. 'Yet the way the sentence was structured made it appear as though that was the actual cause of death. 'Shockingly, the content was swallowed whole by many people inside and outside of this Parliament. This is how dangerous it becomes,' he told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 18). He cautioned against politicising the case or fuelling speculation, reiterating that only verified evidence could form the basis of justice. 'We reject any attempt to play up political sentiment or spread malicious allegations. 'Demands and accusations must be backed by evidence, not half-baked facts or irresponsible claims. 'The police are committed to uncovering the truth and upholding justice,' Saifuddin added. Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel for breaking news alerts and key updates!

German minister warns of China's aggressive stance in Asia-Pacific

TOKYO: Germany's foreign minister has condemned China for what he described as increasingly aggressive actions in the Asia-Pacific region, including threats to alter borders. Johann Wadephul accused Beijing of openly seeking to shift territorial boundaries in its favour, particularly in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas. 'Any escalation in this sensitive hub of international trade would have serious consequences for global security and the world economy,' he said after meeting Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya. A pre-visit statement released on Sunday highlighted China's challenge to international law while asserting regional dominance. 'China's increasingly aggressive behaviour in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas also has implications for us in Europe,' the statement quoted Wadephul as saying. He also criticised China's role in sustaining Russia's war efforts in Ukraine, calling it a key enabler of Moscow's aggression. 'Without it, the war of aggression against Ukraine would not be possible,' Wadephul said, noting China's supply of dual-use goods and energy purchases from Russia. Ahead of US-led talks on Ukraine, he stressed the importance of security guarantees for Kyiv to ensure long-term defence capabilities. Wadephul referenced Donald Trump's recent summit with Vladimir Putin, urging continued pressure on Moscow until it takes concrete steps toward peace. Monday's discussions in Washington aim to outline a negotiated solution for Ukraine, with security assurances being a critical component. 'Ukraine must be able to defend itself effectively even after a ceasefire and peace agreement,' he said. – AFP

Home minister: Justice for Zara Qairina must be based on facts, not baseless claims

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail today stressed that justice for the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir must be pursued based on facts and the rule of law. Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, he said it could not be built on half-baked information or irresponsible, baseless allegations. 'In this matter, there is a common ground among all of us. We want to seek the truth and we want to uphold justice. This is the motivation that brings us together. Justice and truth must be based on facts and a legitimate legal process. 'It cannot be founded on half-baked facts or irresponsible, baseless accusations. It must rest on facts and the proper legal process,' he said in his speech when delivering the minister's statement. 'We reject any attempt to play up political sentiments, or to make malicious speculation and accusations,' he added. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had also earlier today reminded all parties not to turn the death of any bullying victim into a political weapon. This comes after tens of thousands rallied nationwide in a powerful show of solidarity over the unsolved death of Zara Qairina. Saifuddin cited an example of an English teacher who made a TikTok video falsely claiming that Zara had been murdered after being put into a washing machine. 'When we interrogate, why must it be done like that? 'I just want to make content,' said the English teacher. 'We have arrested [the teacher] and, God willing, if the Attorney-General agrees, will be charged,' he revealed. Saifuddin however regretted how that contact was swallowed whole by many in the public, even among some MPs, which he said led to swelling negative sentiments. 'This is where I must say that we cannot rely on emotional sentiment,' he stressed. Earlier, the Kota Kinabalu's Coroner's Court had fixed September 3 for the start of the inquest into the death of Zara Qairina to determine any criminal elements. Lawyer for the family, Hamid Ismail, said that the inquest will be heard before coroner judge Azreena Aziz and could involve up to 195 witnesses, though the final number will be determined by the Attorney General's Chambers.
