Comedian Reveals Cost Of Using 1 Taylor Swift Song In His Act, And It's No Joke

Yahooa day ago
Comedian Marc Maron said the cost to use a Taylor Swift song in his standup special was 'doable' within limits.
(Watch the video below.)
Maron said on Vulture's recent 'Good One' podcast that the sum he paid was for 'up to a minute' of her 2022 song 'Bigger Than The Whole Sky.'
'I think it came out to $50K, around that. ... I did everything I could to get the joke in front of her,' he said.
Maron made the deal with Swift's intermediaries after the song's co-producer, Jack Antonoff, encouraged him to try 'proper' channels to reach the pop star before he'd help. But he 'never heard back from him,' Maron said.
'It was doable,' said Maron, who originally thought the payment would have to come out of his own pocket. 'We made enough money. It was tight, but because of the ticket sales for the special, we were able to get that song.'
Maron's special, 'Panicked,' is set to debut on HBO on Aug. 1, and Maron said the bit involving the song is in both the opening and closing. The show can also be streamed on HBO Max.
'I have no idea if Taylor Swift saw the bit or not,' he said.
Incidentally, the $50,000 that Swift and her associates made from Maron's use of her song is a mere drop in the bucket compared to the estimated $360 million she earned in reclaiming ownership of numerous master recordings recently.
Fast-forward to 1:35:08 for the lowdown on Maron's deal with the pop icon:

Billy Joel sets the record straight on whether he's had multiple DUIs

Billy Joel has had a few car accidents, but not for the reason many people have believed. In his HBO documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' the 76-year-old seeks to clear up consistent speculation that he has been arrested multiple times for drinking under the influence. (HBO is owned by CNN's parent company.) In 2002, Joel crashed a car in East Hampton, New York and less than a year later, he drove into a tree in Sag Harbor which resulted in him having to be airlifted to the hospital. Two years later he crashed into a house in Long Island. The car accidents have been attributed to road conditions and Joel's depressive mental state, and while he has been in rehab before, the singer maintains that he has never gotten a DUI. 'You know, along with fame comes a lot of gossip, rumors. I didn't like the tabloid kind of press,' he said in the documentary. 'For example, there's this rumor that I have all these DUIs. That never happened, but people keep repeating the myth: 'Oh, he's got so many DUIs.'' Joel went into rehab at the Betty Ford Center in 2005 after he said he was given an 'ultimatum' by his then-wife, Katie Lee. He discussed it in 2013 with the New York Times Magazine, but at that time he again denied ever having a DUI. 'I went to rehab in '05 because, when I was with Katie, she said, 'You're drinking way too much.' I never had a DUI in my life. That's another fallacy. Look at the police records.'

HBO Max just got a live sports upgrade for every tier — here's what's coming

HBO Max is giving us another reason to keep it our top pick for the best streaming service out there — Banana Ball. Yes, the baseball sensation that's sweeping the nation is coming to HBO Max. Starting with The Savannah Bananas vs. The Firefighters at Rate Field in Chicago (home of the White Sox) on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m. ET, you'll be able to watch Banana Ball live on TruTV and HBO Max. For those of you who've heard of the Bananas, you already know this is awesome news. The one-time collegiate summer league baseball team has transformed into the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball, ditching traditional baseball for fast-paced, two-hour games featuring everything from dancing grandmas (the "Banana Nanas") to iconic 2000s pop-punk band The All-American Rejects performing an impromptu concert during a game. As someone lucky enough to attend a game in person, I promise you that the hype around this sports sensation is earned. My wife does not like baseball in the slightest, and she had a blast, as this live sporting event is easily as much about the entertainment as it is about the baseball, if not more. And when I say "lucky," I mean it. These games sell out fast, so watching on TruTV or HBO Max might be the best chance you have at seeing what all the fuss is about. Unlike with most live sports, everyone will get access to these Savannah Bananas live broadcasts. Back in February, HBO Max announced that its Bleacher Report Sports add-on, which gives subscribers access to live sports streaming, would become free for most users. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. HBO Max gives you tons of hit shows and movies, from HBO Originals to A24 movies and more. But there was a catch: only Standard and Premium subscribers got this free perk. If you had the Basic with Ads plan, you wouldn't get it, including those who get HBO Max through the Disney Plus, Hulu, HBO Max Bundle With Ads Plan. Not this time, though. All 19 Banana Ball games on truTV will be free to all HBO Max subscribers, including those on the ad-supported plan. So tune in on Aug. 16 and get ready to go Bananas. If you don't have HBO Max, don't worry. As these games are on TruTV, you can also get them through most of the best live TV streaming services.
