TIRUPATI: A 25-year-old woman was tied up to a tree by a moneylender after her husband failed to repay a loan of Rs 80000.
This inhumane incident was reported at Narayanapuram village in Kuppam assembly constituency represented by
Andhra Pradesh chief minister
Nara Chandrababu Naidu in Chittoor district.
The victim was identified as Sirisha, who works as a daily wage labourer at Narayanapuram. Her husband Thimmarayappa had borrowed a sum of Rs 80000 from a local moneylender Muni Kannappa about three years ago.
Thimmarayappa couldn't repay the borrowed money with interest on time and when Muni Kannappa pressurised him to repay his loan, Thimmarayappa abandoned his family and fled away from the village.
After Thimmarayappa fled away, the moneylender began harassing his wife to repay the loan and he often used to hurl abuses at her whenever he found her in the streets.
Not stopping with the abuses, in a bid to exert more pressure on Sirisha, Muni Kannappa once again entered into a heated altercation with her on Monday, dragged her in full public glare and tied her up to a tree at Narayanapuram village, in an extreme act of humiliation.
The deafening cries of Sirisha's two minor children also did not deter Muni Kannappa from his demeaning act of tying up a helpless woman to a tree in a bid to force her to repay his loan.
When local tried to film and photograph Muni Kannappa's inhumane act, he tried to attack them as well.
Kuppam police, who learnt about the incident, rushed to Narayanapuram village and rescued Sirisha from the moneylender's clutches.
After reports of the incident went viral on various social media platforms on Tuesday, chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu expressed anguish over the barbaric act of the moneylender and directed the Chittoor district police administration to immediately arrest him and initiate legal proceedings against him.
Chittoor police informed the CM that they had already arrested Muni Kannappa and have booked a case against him under various sections of the BNS Act.

Minister Seethakka sets monthly targets for Panchayati Raj Dept

Hyderabad, June 17 (UNI) Telangana Minister for Panchayati Raj and Rural Development, Dr Dhanasari Anasuya Seethakka, on Tuesday directed officials of the department to set monthly targets and work systematically towards their achievement to ensure the timely implementation of development and welfare activities. Chairing a high-level review meeting here, the Minister reviewed the progress of ongoing schemes such as Mission Bhagiratha, Indira Mahila Shakti, Stree Nidhi, and the newly introduced HUM Policy for rural road construction. She also addressed pending employee issues and praised the efforts of departmental staff in delivering grassroots services, an official statement said. Minister Seethakka congratulated N Sridhar on taking charge as the Principal Secretary of the Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Department, expressing confidence that under his leadership, the department would scale new heights. She recalled Sridhar's contributions as the former Warangal Collector and CMD of Singareni Collieries, particularly in her own constituency, and said his appointment would strengthen interdepartmental coordination and help secure more funding for rural initiatives. She emphasised that the department, which represents over 2.5 crore people, should function like a family—from the minister to the multipurpose worker—working together with a shared vision of village development. Highlighting the importance of rural road infrastructure, the Minister stated that 18,472 kilometres of roads would be modernised under the HUM Policy, with 7,947 kilometres to be developed in the first phase. She added that Rs 1,800 crore worth of works had already been sanctioned and instructed officials to prepare an action plan to invite tenders within the next 15 days. The guidelines for the HUM project would be released shortly, and teams had been dispatched to Maharashtra and Karnataka to study best practices for effective implementation. Seethakka noted that rural roads, once neglected, would now surpass even urban roads in quality through this policy. She also announced that this year, 1,440 Gram Panchayat buildings and 1,440 Anganwadi centres would be constructed across the state—two for each mandal. These projects are expected to be taken up under a state-wide "Work Fair," which aims to generate employment while creating durable community assets. The Minister said that the government had resolved many staff-related issues since coming to power, including the regular payment of salaries to 93,000 village-level employees through the green channel. She further informed that the file regarding MPDO transfers was with the Chief Minister, and the vehicle allowance file had reached the Finance Department, with approvals expected soon. Principal Secretary N Sridhar, addressing the meeting, said that the Panchayati Raj Department plays a vital role in empowering rural communities and women through schemes like Indira Mahila Shakti. He said the department delivers essential services from the village to the district level and pledged to hold focused review meetings with each section to enhance overall performance. Sridhar urged everyone to work in unison to bring a good name to the government under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Minister Seethakka. He assured full commitment to building a transparent, efficient, and people-centred department. UNI VV SS

BCC discusses action against Tilakwadi Club and Vega Funmobile

Belagavi: Heated discussions marked the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) council meeting on Tuesday, as several corporators accused BCC officials — including the law officer — of indirectly helping the management of Tilakwadi Club, which is under fire for violating lease terms. Deputy commissioner (Revenue) Reshma Talikoti, informed the council that the club breached lease conditions by operating a bar, restaurant, and other commercial activities, which were not permitted. As a result, the commissioner's court ordered the cancellation of the lease in May. A caveat related to the case was also filed in court. Talikoti explained that as per the Karnataka Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, three notices must be served before initiating eviction proceedings. The first notice period expired on June 13, and subsequent notices will follow. However, the club management obtained a court stay against the show-cause notice, temporarily halting the eviction. Corporators advocate Hanumant Kongali and Ramesh Sontakki criticised officials for failing to file a caveat before serving the show-cause notice. "At a crucial stage in the process, the officials helped the club management by issuing a notice without filing a caveat, allowing them to easily obtain a stay," alleged Kongali. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The law officer defended the move, stating that efforts are underway to vacate the stay in upcoming hearings. Vega Funmobile faces eviction In another key issue, ruling BJP members demanded action against Vega Funmobile Pvt Ltd for allegedly evading property tax amounting to Rs 7.3 crore. Deputy commissioner Reshma Talikoti confirmed that two notices were already served — the first with a one-month deadline and the second with a one-week notice, ending on June 18. A final 24-hour notice will be issued on Wednesday, following which seizure proceedings will be initiated. Belagavi (North) MLA Asif Sait suggested exploring a one-time settlement with the company, but officials responded that such an option was no longer available under current rules.
