Wynne Evans says Strictly controversy took him into ‘darkest spot' of his life
The Welsh tenor, 53, known for the GoCompare insurance advertisements, competed in the recent series of the BBC dancing programme alongside professional Katya Jones.
Evans recently announced that he had been dropped by the BBC and will no longer present on BBC Radio Wales following an apology saying that he used 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing tour.
The apology came after the Mail On Sunday reported in January that he aimed a sexual joke at one of the other professional dancers, Janette Manrara.
Speaking on ITV's This Morning, he claimed the story was taken out of context and that he was talking to fellow contestant, EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick, who he gave the nickname 'old spit roast boy' to.
He said: 'I used to call him this because he could contort his legs over his head.
'I didn't know there was a reporter still there, recording, apparently, on their phone.
'Even though I'm looking at Jamie, they claim that I'm directing this word at Janette. And it's totally been taken out of context.
'When I saw the narrative in the newspaper, I was just shocked and horrified.'
He added that the nickname was 'unsuitable' and 'inappropriate' and claims that he was misrepresented.
This comes after Borthwick was suspended from the BBC when a video emerged of the actor using a disabled slur on the set of the dance programme.
Evans added that he never approved of the statement that was issued by the BBC in January where he apologised for making an 'inappropriate and unacceptable' comment.
He said: 'They didn't run it by me. They sent it off to the newspaper. They printed that as my apology. And, of course, then it looks like I validated the story.'
A BBC spokesperson said: 'The apology issued on Wynne's behalf by the Strictly Come Dancing Tour PR representative on Saturday January 25 was fully approved by Wynne.'
While recounting the controversy, he got visibly emotional and said that he wanted to end his life.
He said: 'I've had clinical depression since 2016, diagnosed. It took me into the darkest spot of my life.
'I was at my lowest ebb. I wanted to end my life. I would have if I hadn't been surrounded by people.
'At one point one of the newspapers was so relentless, I remember saying to my girlfriend, I have to kill myself, I have to, because this is what they want.'
He added that he was under the crisis team for a month with his family, friends and girlfriend on a rota to be with him 24 hours a day.
Overnight, Evans has also shared in an Instagram post that he is engaged to his girlfriend Liz Brookes, saying that he is feeling 'very lucky' after proposing in Morocco.

And the segment led to Lorraine showing off her own 'real' bikini body in which she admitted: "I've got a belly!" The star showed off her skin in the white two-piece snap taken as she took a dip in a swimming pool during a recent holiday getaway. In order to demonstrate just how easy it is to edit images, a side-by-side image of Lorraine's real body next to her altered bikini snap was flashed up on the screen. The edited image heavily slimmed down the star and added more definition to her stomach area as well as a much fuller bust and smoother skin. Laughing at the changes, Lorraine squawked: "It just shows you what you can do now. "It depends on what you're using it for. They did it with me, and I looked at it, and I actually laughed! "I thought, crikey!" Looking back at the unedited image, Lorraine quipped: "That's more kind of normal, I've got a belly, who hasn't?" Tributes paid to Britons feared killed in Air India plane crash
Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, who run a spiritual wellness centre, were said to be among the dead. The pair laughed and joked as they filmed a video of themselves at the airport before taking off. (PA Graphics) In an earlier Instagram post they told of their 'mind-blowing' trip to India and their intention to make a vlog about it. Mr Greenlaw is said to have appeared on ITV's This Morning earlier this year to talk about wellness. Former editor of the show Martin Frizell praised his 'vibrancy' and 'enthusiasm'. 'So so sad to hear that Fiongal Greenlaw Meek and his partner are reported to be among the passengers and crew killed today on board the Air India flight bound for Gatwick,' he said in an Instagram post. 'I remember his visit to the studio in January, he was passionate about auras and although I'm a sceptical sort his vibrancy and sheer enthusiasm won folk over. 'And I know for a fact that he hoped to use his appearance on This Morning to build his wellness brand, he had a great future ahead of him. 'Thoughts are with his family and friends and those of his partner Jamie.' The Greenlaw-Meeks were running the Wellness Foundry in London, which offers psychic readings, tarot, reiki and yoga. The firm is included in Time Out's top places in the capital for tarot readings. The Wellness Foundry also has a podcast called Spirit Level, which the website says is a 'guiding light on the journey to holistic well-being and spiritual enlightenment'. The Gloucester Muslim Community group offered 'sincere and deepest condolences' after Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa and their daughter Sara were reported to be among the victims. 'During this moment of overwhelming sorrow, our hearts go out to all those left behind,' a statement said. 'No words can truly ease the pain of such a profound loss, but we pray that the family may find solace in the tremendous outpouring of compassion and solidarity from communities across the world.' Raj Mishra, the mayor of Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, called for people to come together as he announced the deaths of three people from his community. 'Among those lost were Raxa Modha, infant Rudra Modha, and Ms K Mistri, all from our Wellingborough community,' he said. 'I extend my deepest condolences to their families, friends and all those affected by this heartbreaking event. 'May their memories be a blessing, and may we come together to support one another in this time of grief.' Briton Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, is believed to be the only survivor of the crash. Speaking outside the family home in Leicester, his brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, 27, said: 'We were just shocked as soon as we heard it. 'I last spoke to him yesterday morning. We're devastated, just devastated. 'He said, 'I have no idea how I exited the plane'.' Mr Ramesh's older brother Ajay was also aboard the flight. Another of Mr Ramesh's relatives, Jay, said the survivor spoke to his father after the crash and asked after his brother. Jay told PA: 'After the crash he spoke to his dad worrying about his brother saying, 'Where's Ajay'?'

Bridgerton star describes horrific 'life and death' moment she fought off thief
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Bridgerton actress Genevieve Chenneour has shared insight into her horrific experience as she bravely defended herself from a prolific thief. The 27-year-old star's real-life drama was thoroughly modern as she fought off a phone thief in Joe & the Juice. Chenneour, who plays Clara Livingston in Netflix's beloved show, revealed on This Morning the moment which turned into a 'life and death' situation. She shared: 'I had a bit of a sixth sense that something wasn't quite right, as woman you have that kind of intuition, and I could feel people moving around me in a different way but I only became aware of it once the incident had happened.' Chenneour was waiting for her order at the chain cafe on Kensington High Street, London when the thief, who the Daily Mail identified as Zacariah Boulares, 18, quietly snuck up behind her and grabbed her phone, which was placed on the counter. Immediately, the actress sprang into action as she spun around and grabbed his arm while another man came to her aid. 'I did feel they were going back and forth trying to find a target, so they chose me,' she explained CCTV footage showed her freeing her phone from his grasp as she pushed him to the ground and fought back against the hooded criminal. 'I don't know if I would advise anybody else to do it,' Chenneour warned. 'I think I have very quick reactions, thanks to having three brothers growing up and I'm an aviated carded boxer. 'I think it just was an instinct, I also do a lot of fight training for work and acting… I thought that was a normal reaction and I read all the comments [from the CCTV footage] and realised, actually a lot of people would just let them take the phone.' At one point another man threatened to stab Chenneour, turning the incident into 'a real matter' which was 'life and death'. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video She continued: 'So, I did things like, I remember kicking him back with my leg to create space in case he had a weapon on him… It was just a life changing, crazy moment.' In court on May 29, Boulares pleaded guilty to stealing her phone as well as assaulting another customer. The actress previously told the Mail: 'They didn't expect me to stand up for myself – but I did.' 'I was left with a concussion just before the Screen Actors Guild Awards and since then, I've felt constantly on edge,' she shared. 'Even my dog was traumatised – now, if anyone touches me, he panics and tries to protect me. Getting a coffee shouldn't be something you need your wits about you for.' Chenneour added that she was thankful to the staff in store who were 'incredible' during the incident, and she has returned to see since. She retrained as an actress after winning an Olympic scholarship to train for Team GB's artistic swimming team at the age of 15. Unfortunately, an injury prevented her from going pro but after being a stunt double for underwater scenes in Gateway To The West she landed a role on Bridgerton. Boulares reportedly also threatened Aled Jones with a machete 18 months prior, as he stole the star's £17,000 Rolex watch while in West London. He was jailed for 14 months in a young offenders centre after the incident in October 2023, getting released 10 months early. At the hearing regarding Chenneour's case, he also admitted to stealing a handbag at a pizza restaurant in London's West End in January this year. In a message on her Instagram, the Bridgerton debutante thanked fans for their support after the attack. 'I'm okay and incredibly grateful he won't be able to harm anyone else,' she said. 'I am, however, finding it difficult to feel safe going out – especially after being repeatedly threatened with being stabbed in the face.' This second man has been released due to a lack of evidence and won't be going to court, according to the star. A spokesman for the Met Police said: 'Police were called to a restaurant on Kensington High Street on Saturday, 8 February following reports of a theft and an assault. 'CCTV showed the suspect stealing a phone from the table and then assaulting a separate member of the public who confronted him. More Trending 'The victim of the assault was kicked and punched before the suspect left the premises. 'CCTV enquiries identified Zacariah Boulares as the suspect and he was arrested. Boulares, 18, was charged with common assault and theft.' View More » He will be sentenced later this month. Got a story?
