Box Office Milestone: ‘Lilo & Stitch' Becomes First Title of 2025 to Cross $1 Billion Globally

At last.
Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch has cleared the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, becoming the first Hollywood pic of 2025 to achieve the milestone and cementing its status as the year's top-grossing Western movie both globally and internationally, the studio announced Thursday.

Box Office: 'Superman' Saves the Day for DC Studios With $125M Domestic Opening, $220M Globally
It finished Wednesday with a domestic tally of $416.2 million and $584.8 million overseas for a worldwide haul of $1.001 billion.
China's Ne Za 2 is the 2025 record-holder overall, with more than $1.899 billion in ticket sales. The vast majority of that film's earnings, or $1.832 billion, are coming from the Chinese box office. (It has earned $20 million in North America.)
Lilo & Stitch, an adaptation of Walt Disney Animation Studios's popular 2002 animated film, has exceeded expectations all along the way since opening over Memorial Day, thanks to families and Gen Zers who grew up on the original title.
The milestone means Disney's film empire has released four billion-dollar films in the past 13 months alone. In addition to Lilo, produced by Rideback, and the Moana sequel, the roster includes 2024 summer tentpoles Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.328 billion), and Pixar's Inside Out 2 ($1.698 billion), not adjusted for inflation.
'We knew there was a lot of love for Lilo & Stitch with audiences around the world, yet we never take that for granted, and we're proud of how this new film has connected with people,' Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman said in a statement. 'I'm thankful to our filmmakers, our cast, and all on our Studio team who have made this film such a success, and we look forward to more adventures with these characters ahead.'
Domestically, Lilo & Stitch opened May 23 to a record-breaking $183 million over the four-day holiday, helping to fuel the biggest Memorial Day weekend in history alongside Tom Cruise-starrer Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, from Paramount.
Lilo & Stitch is one of only two films this year to surpass $400 million at the domestic box office, behind Warner Bros.' A Minecraft Movie, which has earned a stellar $955.1 million globally to date, but fell short of gaining membership to the billion-dollar club. It is still ahead of Lilo in North America with total ticket sales north of $423 million.
Overseas, Lilo & Stitch ranks as the top-grossing international Hollywood release of the year, and is the highest-grossing Disney live-action film of all time in Mexico. It is also the highest-grossing film of 2025 across a range of key international markets in Europe (France, Italy, Spain) and Latin America (Brazil), in addition to several smaller markets.
Lilo & Stitch is stiil playing in theaters worldwide, with a sequel already in development. The new live-action film's box office success has reignited global interest in the franchise, driving record viewership of the original animated classic and related content on Disney+, which have been viewed more than 640 million hours on the platform globally.
The all-audience crowd pleaser is the 58th film in history to cross the $1 billion mark globally. Among Disney's other live-action pics, 2019's The Lion King tops the list of best earners at $1.662 billion, not adjusted for inflation.

Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen to jointly receive humanitarian award at 2025 Emmys

In an Emmys first, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen will together receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award. The Hollywood golden couple, who will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary in October, will jointly receive the honor, which recognizes awardees' 'extraordinary' philanthropic activism and efforts, according to a news release. Usually handed out to individuals, it's a milestone that the couple will mark together during the Emmys telecast in September. 'Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen have long used their voices – and their hearts – to champion causes that uplift the planet and its people,' Cris Abrego, chair of the Television Academy, said in a statement Wednesday. 'The Television Academy is proud to honor their extraordinary legacy of service with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.' 'Cheers' star Danson cofounded the American Oceans Campaign in 1987 to bring attention to the life-threatening hazards the ocean faces due to the oil spills and pollution. Danson also supports other organizations including the ASPCA and the Elton John AIDS Foundation, among others. Steenburgen has supported several organizations, including Artists for a Free South Africa, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and No Kid Hungry, among others, the release said. Together, the couple cofounded Angels at Risk, which provides resources for families affected by drug and alcohol abuse, and are active supporters of the LGBTQ community. Danson and Steenburgen are both beloved and celebrated film and TV actors, with Danson being a two-time Emmy winner and Steenburgen the recipient of an Academy Award (for best supporting actress for 1980's 'Melvin and Howard). They've appeared in several titles together, including 'Gulliver's Travels' and 'It Must be Love.' The pair met in the early 1980s before tying the knot in 1995. They each have two children from previous relationships, including Steeburgen's son Charlie McDowell, who is married to 'Emily in Paris' star Lily Collins.

Hannah Montana's Streams Skyrocket After Miley Cyrus's Cryptic Hint

Some child stars do everything they can to distance themselves from the projects that first brought them to fame, especially as they seek critical acclaim as adults. Miley Cyrus may have played the wild child for a while, but she never disparaged Hannah Montana, the Disney Channel series that turned her into a household name. She has actually embraced that chapter of her career, and as time has gone on, she seems increasingly grateful for it. Recently, Cyrus appeared on SiriusXM's TikTok Radio, where she hinted that she may be cooking up something to celebrate Hannah Montana's twentieth anniversary, which is set for next year. While the Grammy winner is staying fairly mum about what exactly may come to pass, the mere idea of a special or concert of some kind was enough to help some of the fictional pop star's most beloved tracks soar on Spotify. Hannah Montana's Songs Surge on Spotify Spotify shared data showing that many Hannah Montana tunes enjoyed massive upticks in streams after Cyrus's comments went viral. Seven tracks credited to the Disney Channel brand/musician saw their stream counts grow by at least 100% on July 29, compared to the average daily number of plays. That roundup includes 'I'm Still Good,' 'The Best of Both Worlds,' 'Life's What You Make It,' 'Who Said,' 'True Friend,' 'I Got Nerve,' 'One in a Million,' and 'Let's Get Crazy.' The biggest growth belonged to 'I'm Still Good,' which was up 145%, while both 'One in a Million' and 'Let's Get Crazy' saw their stream totals double. Hannah Montana's Upcoming Anniversary While on the radio interview, Cyrus opened up about the potential future for Hannah Montana, saying, 'I want to design something really, really special for it, because it really was the beginning of all of this.' The singer has been frank about the fact that she has no real desire to tour, so an anniversary concert trek seems unlikely, but perhaps a one-off show or TV retrospective could be in the works.

The AI-Altered ‘Wizard Of Oz' Controversy, Explained

(Photo by Silver) Getty Images An AI-altered version of The Wizard of Oz created for the Las Vegas Sphere has ignited backlash online, with film fans describing the changes as 'vandalism.' As generative AI slowly creeps its way into the film industry, one tendril at a time, the alteration of an iconic film struck many commentators as incredibly invasive. In April, Warner Bros. announced that an altered version of The Wizard of Oz (1939) would play inside the Las Vegas Sphere, with the help of Google's engineers—alterations to the film are estimated to have cost $80 million dollars. The Las Vegas Sphere is something of an absurd object, even for Vegas, a gargantuan metal dome wrapped in LED screens. Surreal images of the Sphere regularly go viral on social media (the Sphere's transformation into a giant emoji is particularly popular). The interior of the Sphere offers an unusually immersive experience for viewers, featuring a curved 160,000-square-foot screen, towering over a 17,600-seat theater. Usually, the Sphere is limited to showing films shot specifically for its giant screen, but in order to bring The Wizard of Oz to the Sphere, AI was used to expand and alter the original film. Google's engineers worked on expanding the aspect ratio, smoothing out the film grain and even adding new background details. Rather than multiplying the existing pixels on screen, Google's generative AI tools created new pixels to increase the definition and scale of the film. While the AI-altered version of the film exists only to be screened in the Las Vegas Sphere, the sight of the artificially expanded land of Oz made commentators uneasy. AI-Altered 'The Wizard Of Oz' Sparks Backlash Shots from the AI-enhanced Wizard of Oz were shared on social media, and baffled many film fans, as intentionally blurry backgrounds had been sharpened, and an AI-generated doppelganger of Uncle Henry had been generated to fill empty space beyond the frame. On X, one commentator offered sarcastic praise, writing: 'I think this is a wonderful idea. Like everyone, I'd been wondering my entire life what Uncle Henry was doing over by the window while Aunt Em argued with Miss Gulch, and finally we know. He was standing there.' Film critics didn't hold back, with many expressing deep disappointment that the original, carefully considered shots of The Wizard of Oz had been altered. While most of the altered shots have the shimmery, glossy sheen of generative AI, the biggest casualty might be the film's glorious hand-painted backdrops, which add to the otherworldly atmosphere of The Wizard of Oz . The Sphere's AI-expansion has changed these backdrops into sprawling, photo-realistic landscapes, making the magical Land of Oz look like just another place—Dorothy might as well have stayed in Kansas. The controversy parallels a widely mocked trend that briefly arose during the early days of generative AI, in which iconic works of art were 'improved' or enlarged using the technology. This led to strange sights, like the AI-generated expansion of the Mona Lisa, creating a bizarre alien landscape. While the Sphere's version of The Wizard of Oz is far from the first time that a classic film has been tinkered with, the fact that AI was used to not only alter existing shots, but generate new imagery beyond the frame, sparked serious concerns. The word "vandalism" appears in many of the critical comments— The Wizard of Oz is viewed as one of cinema's most sacred objects, and film fans do not like to see it being tampered with. Another classic film, Jurassic Park , contains a quote which has proved prescient in the age of generative AI: "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
