Peterson stole the show with a complete-game shutout. He allowed just six hits and no runs while striking out six Nationals hitters across nine dominant innings. Impressively, he didn't walk a single batter, showing excellent command and control throughout the night.
MLB's official account praised the performance, posting:
'David Peterson was LIGHTS OUT tonight in Queens! He lowers his ERA to 2.49.'
The 29-year-old is now 5-2 on the season with a 2.49 ERA. Over 79.2 innings, Peterson has struck out 71 batters while issuing only 24 walks. He allowed just four home runs all year.
The Mets' offense gave him plenty of support with five runs on seven hits. Pete Alonso got things rolling in the bottom of the first with an RBI double that scored Brandon Nimmo.

Juan Soto later launched his 13th home run of the season, and Nimmo added to the lead with a solo shot in the fifth and another in the seventh. He now has 12 homers on the year.

Tigers Urged To Reunite With Familiar Face By Former MLB Executive
The Detroit Tigers entered Thursday with the best record in the American League, but they will likely be looking to add a corner infielder before the trade deadline arrives. The Tigers have been without third baseman and outfielder Matt Vierling for all but four games this season, and although Vierling began his throwing progression Sunday, former MLB executive Jim Bowden of The Athletic believes the team may look to reunite with Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JUNE 11: Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks reacts after hitting a grand slam against the Seattle Mariners during the sixth inning of the MLB game at Chase Field on June 11, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. More Photo byZach McKinstry and Andy Ibanez have been the primary third base tandem for the Tigers this season, with Jace Jung and Javier Baez filling in from time to time. With Baez's resurgent season and versatility combined with the struggles of Jung, the Tigers could look to fill third base with someone outside of the organization in the second half of the season. Enter Suárez. The veteran right-handed slugger began his career with the Tigers and is on pace to hit 30 or more home runs this season for the fourth time in the last five seasons. With the Diamondbacks entering Thursday with a record of 34-34, they may not sell at the deadline, but the Tigers will be in an aggressive mode that may swing the Diamondbacks to make a deal if they lose more ground within the National League West. Suárez will be a free agent after this season, and if the Diamondbacks are not in a competitive position at the trade deadline, he may be a piece that many teams are after in the trade market. Suárez's power is going to be a hot commodity if available come July. More MLB: Clayton Kershaw Calls Cardinals 'Bush League' For Showing Postseason Highlight

Phillies Urged To Trade With Divisional Rival For All-Star Closer
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets are locked in a race for the division crown, and Sports Illustrated's Maddy Hudak urges the Phillies to trade inside the division to turn the tide of the battle for the National League East. Hudak tagged Washington Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan as the target the Phillies should home in on at the trade deadline. SEATTLE, WA - MAY 29: Relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan #67 and catcher Keibert Ruiz #20 of the Washington Nationals celebrate after a game against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on May 29, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. The Nationals won 9-3 in tenth innings. More Photo byThe Nationals are a rebuilding team, and Finnegan will be a free agent after this season, lining them up perfectly to bring in talent in return for their All-Star closer. Finnegan was an All-Star last season and is off to another fantastic start this season with a 2.25 ERA and 18 saves in 21 chances so far. Finnegan would bring certainty to the back end of the Philadelphia bullpen, a group that has been among the league's worst in ERA. The Phillies brought in closer Jordan Romano from the Toronto Blue Jays in free agency this season, and he has been given 10 chances while saving eight. Romano has had his struggles, and the Phillies do not have a clear-cut ninth-inning man, a role that is relied on heavily in October. While Finnegan does not immediately jump the Phillies into purebred title contenders, his presence in the back end of the bullpen could settle the group and bring them close to the major league average. Patrick Mahomes, Brittany Mahomes Make Major Personal Decision
Patrick Mahomes, Brittany Mahomes Make Major Personal Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, are, without a doubt, one of the most well-known couples in the NFL today. Patrick Mahomes is one of the top quarterbacks in the game right now, and his three Super Bowl rings are a clear testament to this fact. His wife, on the other hand, has firmly established herself as part of the elite group of NFL WAGs (wives and girlfriends) as a model, endorser and entrepreneur, among other things. It also only follows that their kids have had the spotlight on them for pretty much their entire lives. Patrick and Brittany Mahomes have three children. Their eldest is daughter Sterling, 4, followed by a son, Bronze, who is 2. In January, Brittany Mahomes gave birth to their third child, Golden Raye. On Tuesday, the couple made a big decision by publicly showing the face of their daughter for the first time. The couple took to Instagram to share a set of adorable family photos, which, for the first time, revealed the beautiful face of Golden. The couple waited five months before they went public with their daughter, who, according to Brittany Mahomes herself, will very likely be their last child. "Nope," she said in a recent interview on the "WHOOP Podcast." "We're done; we're done for a while. Three. I don't know, I mean I feel like you can never like say you're done, but I think three is all I need." Right now, Patrick Mahomes is able to play the role of a full-time dad at home amid the NFL offseason. However, it's only a matter of time before the Chiefs' preparations for the upcoming campaign heat up, which means that Mahomes will be forced to spend a lot of time away from his wife and kids. After all, Dad has a fourth Super Bowl title to win. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 13, 2025, where it first appeared.
