PBK: Additional S'wak DUN seats not commensurating with population growth
MIRI (July 12): Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) has called the proposed addition of 17 State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats as 'unreasonable and unnecessary' as it does not commensurate with Sarawak's population growth.
PBK Miri chief Leslie Ting said based on figures from the Department of Statistics Malaysia, Sarawak only experienced a six per cent growth in population over the past 10 years.
'Therefore, the (proposed) increase in the number of DUN seats by 17 per cent is not commensurate with the population growth in Sarawak,' he told a press conference here Thursday.
The DUN, on July 7, passed the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Membership Composition) Bill 2025 to raise the number of state constituencies from 82 to 99.
On a separate matter, Ting said PBK would either go solo in the next state election or seek to form an alliance with other 'like-minded' local political parties.
At the same time, he called upon Pakatan Harapan (PH) to 'leave the political scene in Sarawak', accusing the coalition led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of failing to deliver on their election pledges and meet the aspirations of Sarawakians.

MBKS approves venue for 722 event, urges unity and mutual respect

KUCHING (July 11): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has approved a permit for the 'Sarawak Independence Day and Tribute to Tok Nan' event to be held at Song Kheng Hai Ground. Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng confirmed this in a statement today, saying there was no need for organisers to raise the issue of a delayed response on social media. He noted that while the EC retains full authority to initiate any redelineation process, the state's decision appears to carry clear political intent. 'If the state assembly has already passed the decision to increase the number of seats, it is clear the EC will have to redraw and adjust constituency boundaries,' he said in a Free Malaysia Today (FMT) report today. 'This includes potentially creating additional parliamentary seats to meet the terms agreed under the MA63 (Malaysia Agreement of 1963),' he added. Wan Ahmad also highlighted the financial implications of such an expansion, pointing out that additional administrative and development funding would be required.
