Bengaluru rain havoc: ‘Crores spent, zero results,' says BJP-led opposition

Hindustan Times19-05-2025
The Opposition in Karnataka on Monday blamed the ruling Congress government for letting rains overwhelm the city, claiming that despite crores of rupees being spent on infrastructure, the result was zero.
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, also in charge of Bengaluru, said he was in touch with officials concerned and is "closely monitoring the situation".

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka and MLA of Malleswaram, CN Ashwath Narayan criticised Shivakumar, saying, "Crores spent. Zero results."
Taking to 'X' he said: "Last night's rains didn't expose Bengaluru's infrastructure — they exposed @DKShivakumar's track record of the last two years of doing nothing."
Shivakumar also said in his 'X' post that he is deeply concerned by the havoc caused by relentless rains in Bengaluru.
"I've been in continuous touch with the concerned officers, and I'm closely monitoring the situation. As always, I remain committed to Bengaluru - working round the clock to address challenges and ensure relief. I will be visiting the BBMP War Room and flood-affected areas personally to take stock on the ground."
The Deputy Chief Minister agreed that the issues Bengaluru faces are not new.
"Let us be clear: the issues we face today are not new. They have been ignored for years, across governments and administrations. The only difference now is - we are working to solve them. Not with temporary fixes, but with long-term, sustainable solutions," he said further in his post on 'X'.
Shivakumar further reiterated that he stands with Bengalureans.
"To my fellow Bengalureans - I am one among you. I understand your concerns, I share your frustration, and I assure you of my commitment to resolving them. I stand with you," he wrote.

Earlier, Karnataka BJP General Secretary and MLA of Karkala, Sunil Kumar Karkala had challenged the government on 'X' to release a white paper on how much has actually been spent on Bengaluru's infrastructure in the last two years.
"Visit Silk Board once — you'll see your real contribution," he said.
Speaking at a press conference, BJP spokesperson Ashwath Narayan Gowda said "Despite the weatherman predicting heavy rainfall almost a week ago, there were no efforts made to meet any monsoon-related exigency. The Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar is directly responsible for the rain havoc in the city'.
He alleged that the Deputy Chief Minister kept repeating 'Brand Bengaluru' and in the last assembly session, Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill was passed.
'From Brand Bengaluru to Greater Bengaluru, and now from Greater Bengaluru, it has now become 'Submerged Bengaluru'. This is the achievement of the state government,' Gowda charged.
The BJP leader said no development works took place in the city in the past two years, which finally culminated in rain havoc.
'Maximum taxes in Karnataka are collected from Bengaluru, but the investment required on the basic infrastructure here is not being done,' the party spokesperson said.

Delhi Chief Minister On Air Quality Dipping To 74 For The First Time In A Decade

New Delhi: Citing the latest Air Quality Index of 74, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to reduce the city's pollution, and claimed that for the first time in a decade, the index has come down to such a satisfactory level. Inaugurating a "Jan Seva Kendra" in the Greater Kailash Assembly constituency, the Chief Minister said, "Apart from cleaning the air, we are also committed to cleaning the Yamuna and ending the mountains of garbage." She said her government, after taking note of the public concerns over the proposed ban on end-of-life (EOL) vehicles, approached the court and got a stay on the ban till November 1. "Going forward, bringing the public's voice to every platform, addressing their needs and demands, is our responsibility. As this is not the same government that only made hollow promises. Today's government is genuinely working to reduce Delhi's pollution," she said. CM Gupta said she aspires to make the city so beautiful and habitable that people are not forced to shift out of here. Calling her government's decision to allow commercial establishments to operate 24x7 historic, the CM said, "The licensing process is also going to be simplified and replaced with a single-window system." The CM slammed the earlier AAP government and legislators, saying, "Earlier, MLAs remained confined to their offices and homes. But each MLA of the BJP is now working tirelessly for the public." At an earlier event, she said the government is aiming to ensure that the bed per 1,000 patient ratio should improve to 5 from the current level of around 2.7. CM Gupta also announced her government's plans to introduce a PPP model for purchasing medical equipment in hospitals and complete the development of the 24 hospitals whose construction was suspended midway by the previous government. Later, taking to the social media platform X, the CM said, "Today, the Jan Seva Kendra was inaugurated in the Greater Kailash Assembly constituency and dedicated to public service." "This centre will serve as an effective medium for resolving the problems of the common people, providing information about the schemes of the Central and State Governments, and delivering prompt assistance to those in need, in line with the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to service and good governance," she wrote. "The BJP's double-engine government is committed to ensuring that development, service, and rights reach the last person in line in a time-bound manner," she wrote.

Internal quota: Parameshwara appeals to groups to not protest

Home Minister G. Parameshwara here on Sunday said that the Congress government was committed to implementing internal reservation for Scheduled Caste communities in the State and appealed to those threatening to stage protest seeking implementation of it to not do so. 'We had made the declaration on internal reservation in Chitradurga and we have also committed to it in our manifesto. Whatever we need to do should be done according to the procedure and guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. We are committed to implementing internal reservation; procedures have to be followed for which we need some time,' he told presspersons. His statement comes in the light of Dalit left (Madigas) groups threatening a protest from August 11. Dalit left leaders from the BJP, including Govind Karjol and A. Narayanaswamy, have also made such a threat. The Minister said that the commission, headed by retired judge H.N. Nagamohan Das, would submit its report to the government on August 4. It would discussed in the State Cabinet and steps would be taken to implement the recommendations. The A.J. Sadashiva Commission report was not accepted by the then BJP government because of data issues. On the meeting of Ministers from the Scheduled Caste community that he had convened, Dr. Parameshwara said that it was decided to have a common voice on the internal reservation. 'If there are any issues with communities, it was decided to talk to them.'
