Morrisons launch exclusive new money saving deals for over-60s in all 344 cafés

Daily Record09-07-2025
The supermarket's new 'Club 60' offers hearty food at "purse pleasing prices."
Morrisons is now offering a new incentive that will see customers over the age of 60 able to save money in all of its cafés across the country.
The supermarket giant announced yesterday, July 8, that it has launched its exclusive new 'Club 60' designed to help pensioners' money go further, especially for those feeling the "financial squeeze."

Available now across all 344 Morrisons cafés nationwide, the incentive will provide eligible customers with two exclusive meal deals that will see them save some extra pennies.

The first will offer over-sixties a small breakfast at any time of the day. This includes sausage, bacon, fried egg, hash brown, Heinz Baked Beanz, toast and butter and any refillable hot drink for just £6, which is said to save £2.50.
Club 60 will also offer an Afternoon Meal Deal from 12pm onwards every day on the classic fish & chips, bread with butter, any slice of cake and hot drink.
The afternoon deal will cost customers just £10 for the entire slap-up meal, which is said to save them £3.25 compared to when before the new club launched.
Not just designed to help over-sixties save some money, but the supermarket's café, which is said to be one of the top destinations for affordable dining, will also serve as a local hub for the community.
The launch of its 'Club 60' incentive comes after research has suggested that almost half (49 per cent) of older people admitted to cutting back on meeting friends due to financial pressures.

According to the supermarket, its latest offer for those over sixty aims to support and provide a social community space with hearty food at "purse-pleasing prices."

Chris Strong, Senior Café Trader at Morrisons, said: 'We know many of our older customers are feeling the financial squeeze – 'Club 60' is our way of offering a welcoming space and a good meal at a great price to our customers.

"It's a small step that we hope will help to make a difference to the pockets of our customers."
This is just one of the latest incentives to be offered by the supermarket for those dining in its cafes, as it previously launched the 'OAPension-Friendly Breakfast' earlier this year, offering anyone over 60 a full English breakfast with a free refillable hot drink for just £5.
The supermarket has also been known to offer seasonal deals for customers dining in at certain times of the year, with offers sometimes launched on Mother's Day, Father's Day and Veteran's Day.

Customers of all ages can also save money on their groceries at Morrisons, as the supermarket recently announced that it was offering two pizzas with a side or dessert for just £10 at all of its pizza counters nationwide.
Meanwhile, for the summer, the firm has launched a 10 percent discount across its Market Street vendors for anyone who is signed up to its More Loyalty scheme.
As for the new 'Club 60', it is officially available for all eligible customers in 344 cafés nationwide now.

Abersoch claims another luxury vessel as speedboat gets marooned

A second luxury boat has become stranded in the Abersoch area in a little over a day. Residents in the Gwynedd resort woke up this morning (Wednesday, August 13) to find a 27ft speedboat high up on the main beach. It was perched on the sand in front of Abersoch's infamous beach huts, many of which are owned by people wealthy enough to afford the super sleek Saxdor 270. Online, it was claimed the vessel drifted onto the beach last night after running out of fuel. Stranded on hard sand, with a 4.78-metre high tide at 11.26am, it was hoped the boat could be refloated this morning. The stranding followed another embarrassing mishap on Monday afternoon, when a luxury yacht en route to Pwllheli hit rocks off St Tudwal's Island East near Abersoch. When retrieval efforts failed, the receding tide left it high and dry. There's more on this incident here. This morning's high tide attempt to refloat the speedboat from Abersoch beach reportedly failed. Despite a rope pull from a second boat offshore, the vessel was said to have stayed resolutely on the shoreline. With tongues firmly in cheeks, there have been local mutterings about 'salvage rights'. Join the North Wales Live WhatsApp community group where you can get the latest stories delivered straight to your phone Online, one man said: 'Bagsy that if it's still there in an hour'. Another said he was too late. 'I called shotgun hours ago soz,' he insisted. The Saxdor 270 was one of the most hotly anticipated sportsboats of 2023. A Finnish brand, the company offers sleek Scandinavian designs at mass market prices by building its boats in Poland. Entry-level prices for the Saxdor 270 start at from £89,857, rising to more than £140,000 for extra fixtures and fittings. They're equipped with a sun lounge with twin sofas converting into a sun pad. It's speculated the boat's owners may call in extra help and make a second attempt to refloat the vessel at the next high tide. This won't be until 11.46pm – but the water will be slightly higher at 4.95 metres.

Russia restricts Telegram, WhatsApp calls, citing law breaches

MOSCOW, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Russia has started restricting some Telegram and WhatsApp calls, accusing the foreign-owned platforms of failing to share information with law enforcement in fraud and terrorism cases, the digital development ministry said on Wednesday. Russia has clashed with foreign tech platforms for several years over content and data storage in a simmering dispute that intensified after Moscow's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, with critics arguing that Russia is trying to expand its control over the country's internet space. President Vladimir Putin has authorised the development of a state-backed messaging app integrated with government services, as Moscow seeks to establish what it calls digital sovereignty by promoting home-grown services and reducing its dependence on platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram. "In order to counteract criminals... measures are being taken to partially restrict calls on these foreign messengers," the Interfax news agency quoted communications regulator Roskomnadzor as saying. "No other restrictions have been imposed on their functionality." WhatsApp owner Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab and Telegram did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Reuters reporters verified the restrictions, noting that voice calls on Telegram had barely been functioning since August 11 and that WhatsApp calls had been rendered impossible due to intermittent sound and a metallic buzzing. The digital development ministry said Telegram and WhatsApp had ignored repeated requests to take measures to stop their platforms being used for activities such as fraud and terrorism. The blocking measures, which extend only to calls, would be lifted should the platforms comply with Russian law, the ministry said. This includes opening legal entities in Russia, complying unconditionally with all Russian laws and cooperating with Roskomnadzor and law enforcement, said Anton Gorelkin, deputy head of the lower house of parliament's information technology committee. Meta was branded an "extremist" organisation by Moscow in 2022, but WhatsApp, widely used in Russia, was allowed to remain. The messenger has received some penalties for failing to remove information banned by Russia. Gorelkin last month said that WhatsApp should prepare to leave the market. Another lawmaker described WhatsApp's presence in the Russian market as a breach of national security. Critics have voiced concerns that Russia's new state-backed messaging app may track its users' activities and have suggested Russia might slow WhatsApp's speeds in order to get users to migrate to the new platform. Human Rights Watch said in a report last month that Russia's government was increasing its technological capacities and control over the country's internet infrastructure, allowing for more widespread blocking and throttling of unwanted websites and censorship circumvention tools.
