Some Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 units are reportedly not opening completely flat

It seems Samsung might be in some hot water over a growing potential issue with the hinge on its Z Fold7. We've been keeping an eye out for developments and still can't quite decide whether the issue is a real cause for concern or not. Still, it is worth reporting.
The facts we have so far are at least a couple of photos published on Reddit of what seem to be store demo units. Indeed, these appear not to be opening fully. That said, the poster does mention that they could "help it a bit", so it's more a case of the hinge not snapping properly than not opening.
This might be due to a defect in the hinge, something caused by rough treatment (though that shouldn't be the case on such new units), or a case of preproduction units not quite meeting the standards. There is also always the possibility that the users didn't open the phone fully, intentionally or not. For the record, we have no such issues with our review unit.

Whatever the case, there is still no talk of a manufacturing defect or a recall of any kind. For some context, the new and redesigned Armor FlexHinge should not only reduce display creasing but also be more durable by distributing stress more evenly.
Samsung hasn't released any formal cycle durability figures regarding its new hinge yet, but we do know that the Z Fold6 is rated for over 200,000 open and close cycles without any issues.
It is also worth noting that the "original" "zero-gap" hinge introduced with the Z Fold5 had an official tolerance of between 178.5 and 181.5 degrees when fully open. Anything more should be covered by warranty. Perhaps the new hinge has a similar degree of tolerance; we just aren't aware of it. We'll keep an eye on how this story develops once the first deliveries begin to arrive.

Galaxy S26 Ultra's updated design leaks in new render

Add this to the Galaxy S26 Ultra leaks, Samsung will bring a thinner and lighter flagship with key upgrades to its screen, cameras and charging speed. The new report comes via UniverseIce, who holds a solid track record with Samsung devices and we also get a render of the device. Ice believes that the S26 Ultra is getting thinner and will now measure below 8mm. For reference, the S25 Ultra is 8.2mm thick. Galaxy S26 Ultra render (@UniverseIce) Not only that, but the upcoming Ultra will be slightly wider and taller than its predecessor (162.8 x 77.6mm) while also weighing slightly less than the current Ultra's 218 grams. The tipster shared a render of how the S26 Ultra might look. We can spot the updated camera island, which is carrying three of the four camera modules. This would be a big change for the Galaxy S Ultra series, as the past four iterations all feature camera cutouts instead of an island formation. Speaking of cameras, UniverseIce believes the S26 Ultra is getting an updated 200MP main sensor with a larger aperture alongside a new 3x telephoto lens and a wider aperture on the 5x periscope module. Samsung is also expected to bring a new 6.9-inch AMOLED display featuring a Color-on-Emitter (CoE) depolarizer layer. This should offer improved color accuracy and brightness output while also drawing less power. CoE OLED panels integrate the color filter directly into the light-emitting layer. The new leak also suggests the S26 Ultra is getting an updated third-generation anti-reflective glass treatment. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra The other big upgrade? Faster wired charging. The new report suggests 60W speeds which will be a modest yet welcome update over the 45W capabilities of the S24 Ultra and its predecessors. Sadly, the battery capacity is once again rumored to remain at 5,000mAh. Source

Apple continues to dominate the US smartphone market, but Samsung is getting surprisingly close

As volatile and as unpredictable as the global mobile industry can often be, it's hard to imagine the leaders of certain key smartphone markets could change very soon. Just like Samsung comfortably dominates the sales charts of its Korean homeland quarter after quarter and year after year, Apple remains easily the top handset vendor in the US, followed by... none other than Samsung. But while the gap between the two giants stateside is generally pretty large, the latest quarterly report put out by Canalys may cause some serious concern in Cupertino. Believe it or not, Samsung is only 18 percent behind its arch-rival in US market share as of Q2 2025, which is probably going to sound like a huge difference... until you look at the Q2 2024 numbers and realize Apple held an advantage of no less than 33 percent back then. That obviously means US iPhone shipments have declined between the April-June 2024 timeframe and the same period of this year (by a whopping 1.6 million units, to be exact), while Samsung has remarkably managed to boost its figures by no less than 2.3 million units. Surprisingly (or not), Samsung's regional progress is mainly attributed to its mid-range Galaxy A family rather than the high-end Galaxy S25 trio released in February or the ultra-thin Edge model added to the premium lineup in (late) May. That's a pretty steep fall for Apple and an impressive rise for Samsung, but Google's numbers are also looking good. With the entry-level Galaxy A16 5G made available in the US at the very beginning of the year, followed by the costlier and overall better Galaxy A36 in March and the even more expensive and more powerful Galaxy A56 earlier this month, Samsung's shipment numbers in the Apple-dominated market could well continue to grow in Q3 2025. Of course, the same is likely to be true for the market's leader if the iPhone 17 family is released by the end of the quarter, which feels all but guaranteed already. And then you've got Motorola and Google in third and fourth place respectively, both of which have either recently launched exciting new products or are preparing to do so in the very near future. All in all, the US smartphone market expanded by a microscopic 1 percent in Q2 2025 compared to Q2 2024, which... is obviously better than a dip in sales. More interestingly, the percentages of smartphones shipped in the US that were manufactured in India and Vietnam absolutely exploded between April and June of this year, while the number of China-made devices on the market predictably went way down as a consequence of Donald Trump's dangerous tariff game. India and Vietnam are currently the big winners of Trump's economic war with China. In addition to making major (and largely unexpected prior to this year) supply chain shifts, all of the nation's top smartphone vendors are "frontloading" inventory, thus attempting to be as well-prepared as possible for any and all short-term tariff revisions. Of course, that makes the aforementioned 1 percent year-on-year increase in shipments feel even more modest than it initially sounded, signaling "tepid" consumer demand in an "increasingly pressured economic environment." Basically, times are tough for smartphone buyers in the US (as if I need to tell you that), and while Samsung, Motorola, and Google all have reasons to be proud of their latest shipment results in the region, said results might not be entirely accurate in terms of actual sell-through, aka the number of units moved from stores and storage facilities to the hands of real-life users.
