Live pig prices up 4.4 per cent in June, says agriculture minister

KUALA LUMPUR: The farm price of live pigs rose 4.4 per cent year-on-year to RM17.78 per kg in June 2025 due to the effects of the 2022 African Swine Fever outbreak.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said following the African Swine Fever outbreak, the farm price of live pigs has continued to rise.
"In June 2024, the price stood at RM17.03 per kg and increased to RM17.78 per kg in June 2025 — marking a 4.4 per cent increase," he said in a written parliamentary reply to Sim Tze Tzin (PH-Bayan Baru).
Nonetheless, he said that the ministry has introduced intervention measures to ensure sufficient pork supply in the nation.
"To ensure sufficient domestic pork supply, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, through the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), has introduced several intervention measures.
"First, facilitating the export of live pigs from Sarawak to Selangor for slaughter. The ministry and the Sarawak government have finalised the export procedures.
"Second, Implementing Modern Pig Farming (MPF) and Pig Farming Area (PFA) models in pig-rearing states.
"State governments regulate pig farming through State Pig Farming Enactments to ensure the industry remains controlled, environmentally safe, and sustainable," he said.
He added that Penang, Perak, Selangor and Sabah have adopted the MPF model, while Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan have implemented the PFA model.
Mohamad said that these policies promote sustainable farming through closed-house systems, effective waste management, buffer zones, and good farming practices.
The ministry is also conducting engagement sessions with pig farmers, butchers, and importers to address challenges in farming and disease control more effectively.

Malaysia to host 4th World Irrigation Forum on climate, irrigation and sustainability

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia will host the 4th World Irrigation Forum (WIF4) and the 76th International Executive Council Meeting in Kuala Lumpur from Sept 7 to 13. The forum will bring together global leaders, technical experts and policymakers from 24 countries to address pressing issues in climate change impacts and water resource management in agriculture. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the high-level international gathering, to be held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, is a strategic avenue to discuss critical challenges in the global irrigation sector and the need for sustainable modernisation of irrigation systems. One of the highlights of WIF4 will be the High-Level Advisory Group Meeting, which is expected to produce policy recommendations and a global roadmap to strengthen the role of irrigation in ensuring world food security. Speaking at the pre-launch of WIF4 and the 76th International Executive Council Meeting in conjunction with the National Farmers, Livestock Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 here today, Mohamad described Malaysia's selection as host as an international recognition of the country's expertise in irrigation, agricultural drainage and water resource management. Also present were Farmers' Organisation Authority chairman Datuk Mahfuz Omar, and Agriculture and Food Security Ministry's Irrigation and Agricultural Drainage Division director Yuslina Mohd Sani. Mohamad said the forum is expected to draw more than 1,000 participants from over 30 countries, including government representatives, research institutions, international organisations, the private sector and farming communities. More than 100 presentations will be delivered, covering comprehensive discussions across the forum's four sub-themes. He highlighted that this year's theme, "Is Irrigation a Sunset Industry?", is particularly significant in reassessing the relevance and future of the irrigation sector in the era of climate change and digital technology. "This theme not only paves the way for critical discussions, but also encourages us to explore new approaches and innovations to ensure the irrigation sector remains relevant, productive and sustainable. "The forum will provide an important avenue for sharing best practices and learning from international experiences in strengthening the country's irrigation sector," he said, adding that it also bridges the gap between practical field experience with scientific research, while promoting stronger international cooperation. Mohamad urged all participants, including policymakers, researchers, engineers and agro-entrepreneurs, to take the initiative in building robust collaborative networks to accelerate the implementation of high-impact projects. He also called on them to seize the opportunity to explore and adopt the latest technologies and innovative practices that can enhance the precision and efficiency of irrigation, encouraging open and constructive dialogue to formulate policy recommendations and practical measures to address future challenges. Mohamad said the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has taken proactive steps to transform the irrigation sector by introducing modern technologies such as precision agriculture, the use of Internet of Things (IoT) in smart irrigation systems, and integrated approaches to sustainable water resource management for irrigation, agricultural drainage and water supply, all aimed at strengthening the agri-food sector.

He said efforts are underway to bring both states in line with Johor — currently the top pineapple-producing state in Peninsular Malaysia — through a large-scale commercial initiative. 'In Sabah, a pilot project with the Sabah Land Development Board (SLDB) will begin on a 300-hectare site in Sinua, Sook,' he said, adding that other potential areas include Kota Marudu, Beaufort and several locations along the main road alignment. 'This is just the beginning. There is huge potential to expand, and we've identified thousands of hectares that can be developed,' he said. The minister also highlighted that the initiative aims to tap not only the domestic market but also the export market, which would boost the added value of agricultural products from both Sabah and Sarawak. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the soft launch of the 4th World Irrigation Forum at the Sabah International Convention Centre here Saturday.

PPK Beluran and Nestlin Malaysia sign RM60m bird's nest MoU

KOTA KINABALU: The Beluran Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK Beluran) and Nestlin Malaysia Sdn Bhd have entered into a 10-year partnership for the supply and purchase of edible bird's nests, valued at over RM60 million. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the MoU involves the supply and purchase of both unprocessed and processed bird's nests. He added that the collaboration will position PPK Beluran as a main hub for the collection and processing of edible bird's nest in Sabah, while boosting the industry's growth in the state. 'The products will be exported to China, which highlights the industry's significant potential in Sabah,' he told reporters after witnessing the MoU exchange at the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day celebration here today. PPK Beluran was represented by its board chairman, Datuk James Ratib, who is also Sabah's Minister of Community Development and People's Wellbeing, while Nestlin Malaysia was represented by its chief executive officer, Datuk Sia Swee Seng. Meanwhile, Mohamad also witnessed another MoU exchange between the Farmers' Organisation Authority (LPP) and the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) for the development of pineapple cultivation in Sabah. The strategic five-year partnership involves technology transfers, technical support, and the expansion of participation among farmers and LPP members, with a total investment of RM500,000. LPP was represented by its director-general Amir Matamin, while LPNM was represented by its director-general Mohd Khairuzamri M Salleh. Mohamad said that aside from Johor, which is currently the leading pineapple producer in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak also have significant potential for large-scale commercial pineapple cultivation, not only to meet local demand but also for export purposes. He added that Sabah has kickstarted its pineapple cultivation on an area spanning 300 hectares in Sinua, Sook, via a collaboration between LPNM and the Sabah Land Development Board (SLDB), and has identified thousands of acres that could be utilised for pineapple cultivation. According to him, districts such as Kota Marudu, Beaufort, and other areas under SLDB's management have also shown promising prospects for commercial-scale cultivation. 'We encourage large-scale cultivation to not only ensure sufficient supply for the domestic market but also to penetrate international markets,' he added. - Bernama
