PPK Beluran and Nestlin Malaysia sign RM60m bird's nest MoU
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the MoU involves the supply and purchase of both unprocessed and processed bird's nests.
He added that the collaboration will position PPK Beluran as a main hub for the collection and processing of edible bird's nest in Sabah, while boosting the industry's growth in the state.
'The products will be exported to China, which highlights the industry's significant potential in Sabah,' he told reporters after witnessing the MoU exchange at the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day celebration here today.
PPK Beluran was represented by its board chairman, Datuk James Ratib, who is also Sabah's Minister of Community Development and People's Wellbeing, while Nestlin Malaysia was represented by its chief executive officer, Datuk Sia Swee Seng.
Meanwhile, Mohamad also witnessed another MoU exchange between the Farmers' Organisation Authority (LPP) and the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) for the development of pineapple cultivation in Sabah.
The strategic five-year partnership involves technology transfers, technical support, and the expansion of participation among farmers and LPP members, with a total investment of RM500,000.
LPP was represented by its director-general Amir Matamin, while LPNM was represented by its director-general Mohd Khairuzamri M Salleh.
Mohamad said that aside from Johor, which is currently the leading pineapple producer in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak also have significant potential for large-scale commercial pineapple cultivation, not only to meet local demand but also for export purposes.
He added that Sabah has kickstarted its pineapple cultivation on an area spanning 300 hectares in Sinua, Sook, via a collaboration between LPNM and the Sabah Land Development Board (SLDB), and has identified thousands of acres that could be utilised for pineapple cultivation.
According to him, districts such as Kota Marudu, Beaufort, and other areas under SLDB's management have also shown promising prospects for commercial-scale cultivation.
'We encourage large-scale cultivation to not only ensure sufficient supply for the domestic market but also to penetrate international markets,' he added. - Bernama

In a statement issued yesterday, the branch's publicity secretary Fang Toung Shyuan acknowledged the government's intent of preventing retirees from misusing their EPF savings and potentially falling into financial hardships. However, he also stressed about the retirement funds rightfully belonging to the contributors. 'EPF savings are the result of a member's lifelong hard work. 'Once they reach retirement age, the funds belong to them, not the EPF. 'Imposing mandatory restrictions on how these savings can be accessed is unjustified,' he said in the statement. Fang called upon the government to respect the voices and feedback of EPF contributors, whose funds had been accumulated over many years of employment. He argued that retirees should not be subjected to a rigid, one-size-fits-all policy, especially when many already had personal retirement plans in place. 'At the very least, members must be free to choose their preferred method of withdrawal,' he said. Fang also expressed concern over recent declines in EPF investment returns, which he warned could lead to public suspicion that the proposed policy served as a means for the government to shift financial risk to the people. He noted that some contributors planned to use their EPF savings to start small businesses, invest, support their children's ventures, or to make home purchases. Furthermore, he cited EPF's data reporting that around 50 per cent of members had less than RM10,000 in their accounts at retirement funds. 'If a monthly disbursement system is enforced, it could mean receiving only a few hundred ringgit per month, which may last just two to three years.' Malaysia to host 4th World Irrigation Forum on climate, irrigation and sustainability
KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia will host the 4th World Irrigation Forum (WIF4) and the 76th International Executive Council Meeting in Kuala Lumpur from Sept 7 to 13. The forum will bring together global leaders, technical experts and policymakers from 24 countries to address pressing issues in climate change impacts and water resource management in agriculture. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the high-level international gathering, to be held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, is a strategic avenue to discuss critical challenges in the global irrigation sector and the need for sustainable modernisation of irrigation systems. One of the highlights of WIF4 will be the High-Level Advisory Group Meeting, which is expected to produce policy recommendations and a global roadmap to strengthen the role of irrigation in ensuring world food security. Speaking at the pre-launch of WIF4 and the 76th International Executive Council Meeting in conjunction with the National Farmers, Livestock Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 here today, Mohamad described Malaysia's selection as host as an international recognition of the country's expertise in irrigation, agricultural drainage and water resource management. Also present were Farmers' Organisation Authority chairman Datuk Mahfuz Omar, and Agriculture and Food Security Ministry's Irrigation and Agricultural Drainage Division director Yuslina Mohd Sani. Govt raises ploughing incentive to RM160 per hectare
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to increase the Ploughing Incentive for Padi Farmers (IPKP) from RM100 to RM160 per hectare for each season, starting this year. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) said the incentive will be implemented in stages to ensure efficient and effective delivery to padi farmers. 'The implementation of this incentive involves two main disbursement methods: an additional cash payment of RM60 per hectare for farmers who have completed ploughing and submitted claims for the first planting season of 2025; 'And a payment of RM160 per hectare through the existing mechanism under the Padi Production Incentive Scheme (SIPP), channelled via service providers or machinery owners for the second planting season of 2025,' it said in a statement today. KPKM explained that for the additional RM60 per hectare incentive for farmers who have planted during the first season of this year, the ministry is finalising the list of eligible recipients based on claims submitted by machinery owners and service providers. 'It will be paid as soon as the list is finalised. The process may take some time as there are service providers who have completed the ploughing work but have yet to submit claims to the agency,' it said. The ministry also announced a new initiative — the Padi Harvesting Incentive — at a rate of RM50 per hectare, starting this year. According to the statement, the incentive will be paid once harvesting work is completed and claimed by registered combine harvester owners or service providers under the Farmers' Organisation Authority (LPP) or Area Farmers' Organisations (PPK), beginning from the second planting season of this year. 'At present, the agency is registering the combine harvesters to enable payment to be made once harvesting is completed,' it said. The ministry also acknowledged delays in incentive payments and said efforts are being made to expedite disbursements to padi farmers in stages. - Bernama
