Too soon for Orlando Pirates fans to panic?
It was the second loss in as many league fixtures for the Soweto giants, who visited Bahlabane Ba Ntwa at Dr Molemela Stadium for their first away fixture in the 2025/26 season.
Orlando Pirates displayed intent from the opening minutes, forcing Maruma Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi into an early save. The shot came from the boot of striker Boitumelo Radiopane, whose left-footed effort was kept out by the Zimbabwean international.
Debutant Lebone Seema followed that up with a headed effort from the resultant corner, but was unable to direct the ball on target.
Arubi was called upon once more in the seventh minute when he effected a crucial touch to keep out a threatening cross from Tshepho Mashiloane on the right flank.
The Buccaneers' continued to dictate matters and were rewarded in the 16th minute when Deon Hotto got on the end of an excellent long ball from stand-in skipper Mbekezeli Mbokazi before linking up with Patrick Maswanganyi, who expertly guided the ball into the net.
The goal sprung the hosts into action as they threatened the Bucs penalty area in their pursuit for the equaliser.
Arubi remained the busier of the two 'keepers, however, and continued to stand between the visitors and a more substantial lead.
He denied Tshepang Moremi and Oswin Appollis in quick succession with Radiopane also failing to breach his defences with an attempt from point-blank range.
The scores were level on the stroke of half-time, following sustained pressure placed on the Bucs defence by the hosts. Winger Daniel Msendami found the decisive touch, firing past a diving Sipho Chaine to make it 1-1.
Looking to restore their lead as they emerged from the tunnel, Orlando Pirates continued to enjoy most of the possession.
Replacement striker Evidence Makgopa went agonisingly close shortly after being substituted in as he collected a cross from Hotto before firing just wide from close range. Sinoxolo Kwayiba was on target with his effort late in the game, but could not find a way past Arubi.
The breakthrough came at the other end of the pitch as the home side delivered a dagger deep in injury time. Substitute forward Jaisen Clifford provided the late winner as he fired in from close range.
There wasn't enough time on the clock for Orlando Pirates to launch a comeback, with the final whistle eventually sounding.
It confirmed another loss for the Buccaneers, who are still yet to get off the mark in the league this season.
The Buccaneers are in 14th place in the standings – and could drop to 16th and last after Wednesday evening's fixtures.
Crucially, they are already four points behind defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, and could drop six points adrift of bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs if Amakhosi defeat Polokwane City at home tonight.

Kaizer Chiefs: Ex-Pirates duo of Mako and Monyane's expectations
Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Cedric Kaze has touched on recruitment at the club and how Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane are treated no differently. The duo were signed after parting ways with Orlando Pirates in June. Some fans have were under the impression that Amakhosi only signed the two players because they were from Pirates. Kaze though, rubbished the claims, saying the club signs quality players who can fit into their system. Both players have already made their debuts for Kaizer Chiefs this season. 'When you recruit a player, you don't recruit a player differently because he comes from the other side [Pirates]. You recruit a player because of the quality that he has and the work that you see he could be able to do to help the team,' Kaze said, as quoted by SPORTSWIRE . 'I believe that they have already experienced the pressure where they come from, the amount of pressure that we have. It's not only one team, but there are also a lot of teams that are big clubs, and when you come from a big club, then you know the expectations,' he added. Kaizer Chiefs have been the team to watch this season, having won back-to-back league matches and currently top the Betway Premiership. We love him: Pirates coach Ouaddou supports under-fire Mashiloane
Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has come out strongly in support of defender Tshepo Mashiloane, who has come in for stinging criticism for his below-par performances in league defeats to Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants. Mashiloane, 23, was not at his best when Pirates suffered back-to-back defeats to United and Gallants this week — and that left the Buccaneers third from the bottom on the Betway Premiership with no points to show. It will be unfair to put the two defeats solely on the shoulders of the under-fire right because Pirates has failed to click under Ouaddou, who has made changes to the starting line-up. 'It is to simply continue giving him some love and also to all my players, like I always do because it's important,' said Ouaddou as Pirates prepared to take on Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 semifinal first leg at Orlando Stadium on Saturday. "We love him," - Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou offers support for defender Tshepo Mashiloane. WATCH full press conference ➡️➡️➡️ — Mahlatse Mphahlele (@BraMahlatse) August 14, 2025 'He is an important player for the club and we will keep on believing in him. He is a young and a good player but he also needs to improve. But we love him.' Ouaddou started his tenure at Pirates by giving opportunities to new players like Mashiloane, Sihle Ntuli, Sipho Mbule, Abdoulaye Mariko, Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi and Boitumelo Radiopane. Supporters have asked why he has discarded tried and tested campaigners like Deano van Rooyen, Thalente Mbatha, Tshegofatsho Mabasa and Evidence Makgopa but he says their opportunities will come. 'All the players are important but every season is different with new players and coaches. When you have such a number of players, they know where they put their feet. 'They [are] in one of the biggest clubs in Africa, so they know the expectations from the fans and everybody else. We are ready to help them reach their targets and improve themselves. 'It is what we are doing every day. Even in the difficult moments we are doing our best to improve them tactically, technically and mentally. 'I knew Mabasa before I came here. The time will come when he will give his best for the club.'
