Pressure grows to strip shamed rugby star Stuart Hogg of his MBE award
HONOURS chiefs are under mounting pressure to strip shamed rugby star Stuart Hogg of his MBE. It comes six months after he was sentenced for inflicting five years of domestic abuse on his estranged wife Gillian. 3 Ex-Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg, 33, was given a community payback order for at Selkirk Sheriff Court for terrorising his wife Credit: Owen Humphreys/PA 3 The former national team skipper was awarded an MBE for services to the game only months before his conviction Credit: Adam Davy/PA Wire 3 Hogg abused spouse Gillian for five years We told in February how the Cabinet Office's honours bosses, the Forfeiture Committee, were asked to make a 'timely decision'. But the disgraced former Scotland captain, 33, is still clinging to the gong awarded to him in 2024 for services to rugby union. Last night Tory MSP Pam Gosal said: 'It's shameful Stuart Hogg has still not done the right thing and handed back his MBE. "His continued refusal is an insult to his victim and all domestic abuse victims across the country. And clinical psychologist Dr Mairead Tagg, who has worked with domestic abuse survivors for more than 20 years, also urged the officials to act now. She said: 'Are they just hoping it will all go away? "Do they think we are so taken up with other issues that we will just let it go? "I don't think so. 'Stuart Hogg made his ex- partner's life a living hell. Rugby player Stuart Hogg sentenced for abusing estranged wife 'Do we really want to reward that? "This man has let his teammates down, he has let his country down and the good name of Scottish rugby down.' Dr Tagg added: 'He is not a role model. "We should not be rewarding domestic abusers.' We told how Hogg pleaded guilty last November to a charge of domestic abuse involving mum-of-four Gillian, 38. He admitted to shouting and swearing, tracking her movements and sending distressing messages. At Selkirk Sheriff Court in January he got a community supervision order and was barred from contacting his ex for five years. First Minister John Swinney previously said calls to take back Hogg's MBE were 'reasonable and understandable'. An honour can be withdrawn for a variety of reasons, including criminal convictions and bringing the honours system into disrepute. Former Crewe Alexandra footie manager Dario Gradi, 84, was stripped of his MBE in 2023 after failing to protect kids from sexual abuse at the club. A review found he 'should have done more' on claims about paedo coach Barry Bennell. Hogg, now at French side Montpellier, was approached for comment. The Cabinet Office said it didn't comment on individuals.

Taxpayers foot £30k bill for short-lived court fight linked to Sheku Bayoh probe
Critics say the costs could have been avoided if there was "openness and transparency" Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE SNP Government spent £30,000 on a short-lived case linked to the Sheku Bayoh probe. We can reveal the huge bill was run up even though a legal challenge by cops was withdrawn just days after it came to court. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 The judicial review was launched at the Court of Session in Edinburgh 3 Tory shadow Justice Secretary Liam Kerr MSP Credit: Alamy Police Scotland called for a 'judicial review' in January over a bid to extend the inquiry into how Mr Bayoh, 31, died in custody in Kirkcaldy in 2015. His family's lawyers wanted Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes to let them examine if any officers should have been prosecuted. The force blasted 'a failure to share relevant material'. But days later they said more details had been provided. Ms Forbes later ruled an extension wouldn't be in the public interest. Tory shadow Justice Secretary Liam Kerr said: 'Scots will wonder how the SNP government racked up these costs in such a short space of time "Yet again, the SNP have spent public money in court in a way many would consider wasteful and pointless. 'SNP ministers should come clean about developments in this inquiry and guarantee answers will be delivered for everyone involved.' And a source said: "It's a joke. It could have been avoided if there was openness and transparency." Deputy Chief Constable Alan Speirs said the info received meant the force could 'more fully engage in the process'. Sheku Bayoh's sister says family still 'suffering' five years after his death and calls for justice in online protest The Scottish Government said: 'Our decisions are informed by analysis of legal considerations. "The nature of any advice sought or given remains confidential.'

Scandal-hit Ferguson Marine may build two new Scots ships in hopeful bid to secure future
It comes just days after MSPs urged Nats chiefs to 'urgently' invest in the yard 'SHIP-SHAPE DEAL' Scandal-hit Ferguson Marine may build two new Scots ships in hopeful bid to secure future Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SCANDAL-hit Ferguson Marine is weighing up a bid to build two new ships for the Scottish Government in order to secure its future. Bosses at the nationalised shipyard have been alerted to the need for replacement marine protection and research vessels. Ferguson chief financial officer David Dishon, pictured, said: 'We have registered our interest and await details of the tender before deciding whether or not to bid.' Ministers are looking to replace MRV Scotia, used to assess fish stocks, and MPV Minna, which combats illegal marine activity. Both were built by Ferguson in 1998 and 2003. We told last week how the yard has won work to build three structural units for a Type 26 Destroyer being assembled by BAE in Glasgow. Previous similar work has yielded around £7million. Tory transport spokeswoman Sue Webber said: 'The SNP's gross mismanagement since they took control of the yard leaves it at a clear disadvantage in any bidding process.' Government procurement quango CMAL recently handed a £175million seven-ship small ferries replacement contract to a yard in Poland. Ferguson, based in Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, had bid for the work. It has no full vessel contracts after the second of two delayed Caledonian MacBrayne ferries, MV Glen Rosa, is delivered next year. Glen Rosa ferry finally launched from Ferguson Marine shipyard The cost of her and sister MV Glen Sannox has spiralled from £97million to around £400million. Lib Dem Scottish affairs spokeswoman Christine Jardine said: 'A revolving door of well-paid executives has done little to turn around fortunes, while the SNP are handing contracts to Poland rather than supporting Clyde shipbuilding.' A Scottish Government spokesperson said: 'MPV Minna and MRV Scotia are reaching the end of their operational lifespans. This early market engagement is part of a planned renewal programme. We are finalising specifications.'
