BLOGGING THE VIEW: Films to hit the big screen in 2025
The year is already halfway through but that doesn't mean the best is behind us!
As the winter chill kicks in, now is the time to cosy up with some popcorn and a great film – and there are lots in store in 2025.
Here's a look at 13 great upcoming films – many of them sequels or remakes for the nostalgic among us.
Blockbusters
· Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (Part Two): The time has finally come. After 8 instalments dating back to 1996, Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt in what's expected to be the franchise's explosive finale.
· Fantastic Four (MCU) – First Steps: Marvel's First Family – Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing – officially enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe, setting up a major new phase.
· TRON – Ares: Jared Leto stars in the newest instalment of the cult digital sci-fi series.
· Avatar 3 – Fire & Ash: James Cameron continues his epic Pandora saga with more stunning visuals and deeper world building.
Dramas & action
· Michael: A biopic of Michael Jackson, starring his real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson.
· Alto Knights: A gangster drama starring Robert De Niro in dual roles as 1950s mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, directed by Barry Levinson.
· Ballerina: A John Wick spin-off set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, starring Ana de Armas as a deadly assassin out for revenge.
· 28 Years Later: A long-awaited continuation of Danny Boyle's iconic post-apocalyptic horror series starring Ralph Fiennes.
Animation
· Smurfs (animated musical): This is a new musical, live-action comedy with Rihanna voicing Smurfette, and a great ensemble cast.
· Lilo & Stitch (live action): Disney reimagines the classic animated tale with a live-action twist.
· How to Train Your Dragon (live action): This is a new take on the beloved story of Hiccup and Toothless.
Whether you're looking for something to keep you on the edge of your seat, or just a bit of a walk down memory lane, there are some great films still to hit the big screen this year, so don't despair!

Why modern cinemas are failing to keep audiences happy
Cinemas offer recliners and snacks, but fail at basic comfort and service. Human interaction could keep patrons returning despite streaming competition. Cinemas shouldn't exist. Like the dinosaurs, or vinyl, they should have gone extinct in the relentless face of technological advancement: videos (VHS and Betamax) allowed us to break free of the 8mm home movie tyranny, while DVDs were a godsend. Blue Ray introduced us to a new frontier of high definition and then home theatres literally took Hollywood into our lounges with surround sound. And yet, somehow, cinemas didn't get the message. The pandemic, with its lockdown and the prospect of everyone breathing each other's germs in a warm and dark insulated room should have been its death knell. Tom Cruise is widely credited with preventing that through his slew of derring-do adventure flicks untainted by CGI that literally are better on the big screen. His determination during Covid – and a masterful campaign of misinformation – scared other studios into not shuttering their sets and getting back to work during the industry's greatest inflection point since the VCR. ALSO READ: New film unveils the world of John Lennon and Yoko Ono It also galvanised his own studio into completing work on the blockbuster Top Gun sequel which, in turn, led to the last two instalments of his Mission Impossible franchise, the last of which pays generous cinematic tribute to some of South Africa's most breathtaking landscapes. Cinemas, too, have done a bit to ward off the advance of time by partnering with corporates to take down the ever-spiralling cost of tickets, although not the price of popcorn, Coke and sweets, which continues to do as much for smuggling as Covid did for the illegal tobacco industry. Where cinemas are missing a trick is in not taking a leaf from the past and having human beings doing the work that digitisation and algorithms do today. At least one cinema chain has created the wheeze of getting you to pay extra for a reclining padded seat (fatal for anyone over 45 to stay awake for the duration) and mid-film service of victuals to your armrest. A more practical halfway point might be employing people to check in on cinema patrons while the film is underway to make sure no-one is chatting on their phone, shooting a pirate version of it – or freezing/boiling because of the robotic programming of air-conditioning. ALSO READ: Of Enderman and creepers: Minecraft movie is a romp In the end, all Cruise's laudable efforts might be undone by just that – not the cost of tickets, but the very real risk of freezing to death in summer or melting into a pool of sweat in winter.

Can South African cinemas survive in a streaming-dominated world?
Can the cinema industry in South Africa survive in an age of streaming? In an age where streaming services offer an endless number of films at our fingertips, the global cinema industry faces challenges, grappling with declining audiences and escalating operational costs. Despite the closure of several cinemas nationwide, Ster Kinekor is confident that this year will be a good year, as it recorded its biggest 'out of season' weekend admissions of 2025 last weekend. 'This once again is proof that cinema is alive and well, and that audiences still prefer watching the new release of a blockbuster title on the big screen. It also proves that movie magic is not regulated by the calendar,' said Mark Sardi, chief executive officer of Ster-Kinekor. The strong showing was fuelled by two major releases: the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch and the latest Mission: Impossible film, Final Reckoning. Across South Africa, several theatres have closed their doors over the past year, including long-running venues at Bedford Square in Johannesburg, Gateway in Umhlanga, and most recently, Cavendish Square in Cape Town. These closures follow years of pressure from streaming services, shifting consumer habits, and the lasting effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Cinema chain Nu Metro recently took over the Bedford Square site previously occupied by Ster-Kinekor. It is expected to take over the Ster Kinekor cinema complex at Gateway.
