National Technology Day a tribute to our scientists and engineers: Kiren Rijiju on 26 years of Pokhran-II nuclear tests
NEW DELHI: India on Sunday observed
National Technology Day
, commemorating the successful nuclear tests conducted at Pokhran on May 11, 1998, a landmark event that established the country as a nuclear power and underscored its growing technological prowess.
BJP leader
Kiren Rijiju
paid tribute to the occasion, posting on X, "On this day in 1998, India took a bold leap with the Pokhran tests, a moment etched in our history.

Amid flare-up hours after thaw, officials say things will settle down with time
Ceasefire on, but pressure stays: Key decisions by India against Pak that still stand
'Will work with India & Pakistan to seek solution on Kashmir': Trump
Atal Bihari
Vajpayee declared 11th May as National Technology Day, a tribute to our scientists & engineers whose brilliance continue to power India's journey of self-reliance."
The day not only marks the
Pokhran-II nuclear tests
(Operation Shakti), but also two other key technological achievements: the successful test-firing of the Trishul missile and the first test flight of the indigenously developed Hansa aircraft.
Following the tests, then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee added the words "Jai Vigyan" to the iconic slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan." The following year, on May 11, 1999, India celebrated its first official National Technology Day, organised by the Council for Technology.
India is now among the eight nations globally known to possess nuclear weapons. Its nuclear doctrine follows a No First Use (NFU) policy and a credible minimum deterrence posture, built on decades of research, strategic vision, and indigenous development.
National Technology Day serves as a tribute to the contributions of
Indian scientists and engineers
and highlights the country's strides in innovation, defence, and technological self-reliance.

Bihar SC Commission sends notice to Lalu for 'disrespecting' Ambedkar
The Bihar State Commission for Scheduled Castes has issued a notice to RJD president Lalu Prasad for allegedly disrespecting Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar. The Commission has given the former chief minister 15 days to respond, warning that failure to do so could lead to legal proceedings. Talking to PTI, Bihar SC Commission vice-chairman Devendra Kumar said a notice was issued to Lalu Prasad seeking an explanation over the alleged incident. "The Commission has given Prasad 15 days to respond and warned that failure to do so could result in action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act," he added. The controversy erupted after a video, purportedly recorded during Lalu Prasad's 78th birthday celebrations earlier this week, went viral. In the clip, the ailing leader is seen seated on a couch with his feet on a nearby sofa. A supporter then enters the room carrying a portrait of Dr. Ambedkar and places it near Prasad's feet before greeting him. The act drew sharp criticism from political opponents. On Saturday, the BJP accused the RJD chief of insulting the Dalit icon. Addressing a press conference, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister, a former state BJP president, played the video, demanding accountability. On Sunday, saffron party workers staged a protest and burnt an effigy of Prasad at Income Tax Golumber here. Responding to the notice, Tejashwi Yadav, leader of the opposition in Bihar Assembly and Lalu Prasad's son, dismissed the move as politically motivated. "There have been so many cases of atrocities against Dalits that the Commission has ignored. But since we oppose the BJP, we are being subjected to intimidatory tactics," he said. He further mocked the Commission's process, claiming that a copy of the notice had not yet been officially received. "The draft that's doing the rounds contains multiple grammatical errors. We've also learned that the letter has been withdrawn twice for corrections. We'll respond appropriately once the Commission finishes drafting and formally dispatches it," he added. Yadav also took aim at the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government, accusing it of using state commissions as platforms for political favoritism ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. "In the recently formed commissions, relatives of top NDA leadersincluding from JD(U)have been appointed. Several competent individuals across Bihar were overlooked," he alleged. He further claimed that wives of retired bureaucrats close to the Chief Minister had been accommodated in these commissions, and that children of such officials had set up consultancy firms now working with various government departments. "Frankly speaking, the unconscious Chief Minister and his NDA allies have created what I would call a Jamai Commission' in Biharwhere sons-in-law, relatives, and children of alliance leaders are being handed posts," Tejashwi said. BJP ally Tipra Motha seeks PM's intervention for 'pushing back' illegal immigrants in Tripura
BJP ally Tipra Motha Party (TMP) sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to send back illegal Bangladeshi immigrants living in Tripura. Senior TMP leader and Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma told PTI that following the directives of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), states like Gujarat, Assam and Meghalaya took swift action. "Illegal migrants were detained, flown to various border areas and pushed back to their country of origin. This has not been done in Tripura as was expected," he said. With this demand, a 15-member delegation of the TMP, led by Mr. Debbarma, met Governor N. Indrasena Reddy on Saturday (June 14, 2025) and handed over a memorandum, seeking the PM's intervention. Mr. Debbarma said the TMP urged the PM to send a task force to the state. "We also urged for the setting up of a mechanism, involving the Assam Rifles, CRPF and the State police to detect, detain and push back illegal migrants," he said. 'Demographic change' Expressing concern over "demographic change" in the state, Mr. Debbarma said, "As per government records, the state accepted 6,09,000 people who had migrated from Bangladesh for various reasons during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. An accord was signed with a cut-off date of March 24, 1971, for the identification of illegal migrants." A Mobile Task Force (MTF) was also raised under the Tripura Police with a separate budget for detection and deportation of all the illegal migrants, but the problem persists, he said.
