SGPC urges Centre to release Sikh prisoners on Guru Teg Bahadur martyrdom day anniv
The committee also approved the establishment of a 'Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Chair' at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said that during the 550th Prakash Gurpurb (birth anniversary) celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev in 2019, the Union government had issued a notification regarding the release of some Sikh prisoners and commutation of Balwant Singh Rajoana's death sentence.
'However, that notification has not yet been implemented fully. He emphasised that the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur is a historic opportunity for the Centre to implement that decision fully,' Dhami said.
He further said that the SGPC has given in-principle approval for establishing a dedicated Chair in the name of Guru Teg Bahadur at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University. 'The Chair will focus on original and research-based work on the life, travels, and martyrdom of the ninth Guru, along with philosophical studies on his divine gurbani (verses),' he said.
In another decision, Dhami said the SGPC will support preparations for the National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance exam through its directorate of education.
'Selected students will be provided free graduation education and a monthly stipend, as part of its Nishchai Administrative Services Preparatory Academy and Nishchai Judicial Academy programmes', the SGPC chief said.
He also demanded the immediate reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor and said the holy site holds deep emotional and spiritual significance for Sikhs.
Dhami ducks question on rebel group's poll schedule
Dhami didn't comment on the Akal Takht-appointed panel's announcement of holding elections to pick the party president and office-bearers at the Teja Singh Samundri Hall, the gurdwara body's headquarters, on August 11.
On Sunday, Sukhbir Singh Badal-led SAD camp made it clear that it will not participate in the upcoming election of office-bearers scheduled for August 11.
Senior SAD leader Cheema dismissed the rebel faction's efforts, calling the membership drive a 'farce.
He questioned the legitimacy of the five-member committee, which claimed to have inducted 26 lakh new members, given the resignation of two key figures.

Bangladesh: Student leader arrested on extortion charge
Dhaka, Aug 1 (PTI) Bangladesh police on Friday arrested a student leader on extortion charges, nearly a week after taking into custody five of his comrades, including two prominent figures of Students against Discrimination, in the same case. The Students against Discrimination (SAD) had led last year's mass protest campaign that eventually toppled prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League regime on August 5. 'Our detective branch arrested Jane Alam Apu from Dhaka's Wari area. Apu is the sixth accused to be arrested in the same case of extortion," joint commissioner of police Mohammad Nasirul Islam said. On July 26, police arrested five student leaders, including SAD figures Ibrahim Hossain Munna and Abdur Razzak Riyad, sparking a nationwide uproar. Their arrest prompted the SAD to expel them immediately and dissolve all its units excepting the central committee. Munna was SAD's Dhaka city convenor while Riyad was the convenor of the platform's Private Universities Committee. According to police, the group first went to former lawmaker of now disbanded Awami League Shammi Ahmed's residence at posh Gulshan area in the capital on July 17 and demanded Taka 50 lakh from her husband Abu Zafar since his 'fascist collaborator wife' was not at the house. On that day, they extorted Taka 10 lakh from him and on July 26 they went again to the house to collect the remaining Taka 40 lakh when police appeared at the scene and arrested them responding to a call from the family. The police action came as CCTV footage showing the extortionists receiving cash in the guest room of a residence went viral on social media. The SAD had spearheaded the violent street movement leading to Hasina's ouster. Three days after she fled to India, Muhammad Yunus took over as the head of the interim government on August 8. Two of the representatives of the SAD platform are Yunus' cabinet members. The SAD had later turned into a political outfit, the National Citizen Party (NCP), in February this year. Following the incident, former SAD spokesperson Umama Fatema, who recently resigned from the platform, in a video post on social media alleged that corruption had gripped the platform's leaders and that the 'July Uprising' 'has been made a 'money-making machine'." Fatema, who was one of the key coordinators of the student-led protest last year, said she was 'used like a tissue paper or a doormat" and claimed all key decisions came from Hare Road, where the government's advisers reside. Service Norms of Akal Takht jathedar: SGPC removes GNDU V-C from panel days after his interaction with RSS chief
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Friday removed Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Vice-Chancellor Dr Karamjit Singh from the committee formed to frame service norms for the Akal Takht's Jathedar, the move coming days after he made some comments during a discussion with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, which have been perceived as offensive to the sentiments of the Sikh community. 'A video circulating on social media shows Dr Karamjit Singh expressing views aligned with an anti-Sikh ideology during his conversation with the head of the RSS,' SGPC secretary Partap Singh said. 'In light of objections raised by the community, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami has taken the step to remove Dr Karamjit Singh from the aforementioned committee,' he added. The Akal Takht in July 2004, had issued a directive asking all Sikhs to remain cautious about the activities of RSS and its Sikh wing — Rashtriya Sikh Sangat. The directive was issued as both bodies were at the time taking proactive steps to celebrate 400th anniversary of first installation of Guru Granth Sahib, something that had irked the Akal Takht. The GNDU, meanwhile, issued a statement saying that the Vice-Chancellor had attended a programme organised by Amrita University, Kochi, which brought together V-Cs from various institutions. 'The purpose of this gathering was to strengthen academic collaboration and share information about initiatives being undertaken at their respective universities,' it said. During the event, V-C Singh shared details about the institution's efforts to digitize the Punjabi language as a response to modern needs, environmental initiatives inspired by Sri Guru Har Rai Ji, and the university's role in promoting Sikh philosophy, it said. The university further said that misleading statements based on incomplete information about the event are being circulated on social media, and such claims are far from the truth. The university urged the public not to believe or spread unverified or misleading information. Earlier, Punjab Congress MLA Pargat Singh had raised objections after a video purportedly showing GNDU V-C briefing Bhagwat at the Mysuru event on July 28 surfaced. The allaged interaction took place at the 'Gyan Sabha – Education for Viksit Bharat', an event organised by Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham at BN Bahadur Institute of Management Sciences (BNBIMS). The event focused on the role of education in building a developed India. Pargat criticised the Punjab government, accusing it of ideological alignment with the RSS. Taking to X, he posted: 'When GNDU's Vice-Chancellor is seen abjectly explaining things to the RSS chief, it raises serious questions. It shows how the AAP government in Punjab has helped the RSS to take control of the entire education system, including universities, in Punjab.' The video shared by the legislator purportedly shows the V-C rising from his seat in the audience and informing the RSS chief about initiatives at the university, including the introduction of a compulsory PhD course on Bharatiya Parampara (Indian tradition) and the establishment of a Sikh Chair aimed at studying the connections between the Rigveda and the teachings of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev. Pargat Singh further alleged that the AAP government had already displayed its alignment with right-wing policies by implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) in the state. The Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas was established in 2007 as an extension of the Shiksha Bachao Andolan, and has since emerged as the RSS's principal platform for educational outreach. It promotes value-based education, textbook reforms, and the revival of Indian knowledge systems.

GNDU VC Karamjit Singh seen on stage with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in Kerala, courts controversy
Amritsar: Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) vice chancellor Dr Karamjit Singh courted controversy after he attended a meeting in Kerala where Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat was seen seated on the stage. In a viral video from the event, Karamjit Singh is seen addressing the gathering while Bhagwat remains on dais. Although the audio is unclear, the VC appears to be speaking about the introduction of new academic courses on Bhartiya parampara (Indian traditions) and the establishment of a Sikh Studies Chair. This chair, he says, would explore links between the Rigveda and Guru Nanak Dev's teachings, particularly the concept of Sarbat da Bhala (welfare of all). He also reportedly touched on issues related to the environment and Punjab's industry. Reacting to the video, the leader of opposition in Punjab assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, posted on X: "The GNDU VC bowing before RSS chief isn't just shameful — it's a symbol of how education in Punjab is being hijacked. Kejriwal, a closet Sanghi, and Bhagwant Mann are enabling RSS infiltration into our universities." Terming the AAP a 'B team' of the BJP, Bajwa cautioned: "B-team, stop this ideological takeover." AAP govt has already shown its obedience to the right-wing agenda by implementing the NEP (National Education Policy) in toto. " When contacted, Dr Karamjit Singh explicitly denied addressing Mohan Bhagwat or the general gathering. He clarified that he was attending a vice chancellors' meet in Kerala and was interacting solely with fellow university heads. "At no point did I address Mohan Bhagwat. He was present, but my interaction was limited to the vice chancellors," he said.
