How Fanatics is teaching business acumen to pro athletes

CNBC16 hours ago

Sports merchandising giant Fanatics is aiming to build a training camp for athletes to prepare them for life off the field.
More than two dozen NBA, NFL and NHL players participated in the company's Athlete Immersion Program this past weekend as part of Fanatics Fest in New York City. The program included three days of workshops on business, entrepreneurship, tech and more.
"This definitely opened my eyes," said Cole Anthony, a guard for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies. "I'm already trying to do things on the business side with my partners, my family. It just motivates me more."
The "coaches" for the business boot camp included Fanatics founder Michael Rubin, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, Apollo Global cofounder and Philadelphia 76ers managing partner Josh Harris, Raising Cane's founder Todd Graves, ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro and Boardroom cofounder and CEO Rich Kleiman.
Aaron Donald, who retired from the NFL's Los Angeles Rams in 2024 after winning the Super Bowl, has already begun a new career in business, including an ownership stake in sports nutrition company Ready. But Donald, likely a future Hall of Famer, said he was blown away by the all-star team of business leaders.
"I think it's one of hell of an opportunity," said Donald. "I'm in a room with guys running companies worth billions of dollars. How many opportunities are you going to get to do that? You have to take advantage of all of those opportunities and knowledge."
Fanatics launched the Athlete Immersion Program in 2023 and this year is partnering with Boardroom, a media and advisory company cofounded by Kleiman and NBA superstar Kevin Durant.
"I think it's great to be able to give them a bit of a blueprint," said Kleiman. "Being able to put them in the room with people that have the answers, that have done it, that lead industries. I think you get so much power and opportunity just from the information you get from watching, from learning and from being in these rooms and understanding how to move."
Kleiman pointed to former NBA player Junior Bridgeman, who made less than $3 million during his 12-year career in the league, but built a net worth of more than $1 billion after retirement primarily through investments in Wendy's, Pizza Hut and Chili's franchises and then later through Coca-Cola distribution.
"What he did, he's exceptional," said Kleiman of Bridgeman, who died in March. "He wasn't just a name. He actually built an operational team, built them up, oversaw them, and he was a tycoon of a business mind."
Fanatics Chief People Officer Toretha McGuire said the program is focused on helping athletes use their playing days, what they describe as their "1.0 career" to fuel their "2.0 career."
It's an experience similar to a business school with lectures, case studies and projects, in which each athlete creates their own limited-edition clothing line with vintage sports apparel company Mitchell & Ness, a subsidiary of Fanatics.
"They go through a base business case, we teach them business fundamentals, we take them through the Fanatics business case where we bring them to 2021 where Michael [Rubin] did a final capital raise and we basically say, 'What would you have done?'" McGuire said.
Most professional athletes retire from playing when they're still young, she added.
"The opportunities they have in their 1.0 careers in terms of access and expanding their networks are going to be very critical," she said.
Graves, who founded the popular fried chicken chain Raising Cane's, spoke on a panel about the realities and challenges of entrepreneurship
"If you absolutely want to start a business, imagine how hard it is, multiply that by infinity to be able to make it work," he said. "You have to be passionate, you have to be in the details 100%. And you have to know what you don't know, right? So that is bringing in great people to try and grow it."
The Athlete Immersion Program is meant to be a continuous learning opportunity through which players receive support, education and networking opportunities from Fanatics and Boardroom before and after they begin their business journey.
The next session will be held in December for WNBA, NWSL and MLB athletes in the offseason.
For Anthony, who was recently traded to the Grizzlies from the Orlando Magic, it's also shown him the real parallels between competing in sports and competing in business.
"The common thing with everyone who has spoken to us and I've been able to talk to one-on-one is that every person I met here has been a grinder," he said. "They make whatever it is they are passionate about, or what they are working on their priority. I think that's just dope to hear from other people I can relate to in that sense."
A decade ago, reports suggested 16% of NFL players ultimately filed for bankruptcy — a sign of the type of financial strain many professional athletes face and a cautionary tale of life after the game.
But today, many of the people participating in the Fanatics curriculum believe opportunities like the Athlete Immersion Program can change the narrative — and their financial future.
For Donald, who will be remembered as one of the greatest defenders in NFL history, the focus now is finding the greatest opportunities for the next chapter of his life.
"It would be silly for me to stop the hard work, discipline, the structure that got me to a certain point," he said. "I'm trying to build generational wealth for my kids."

Which Wisconsin natives are in a position to be selected during the 2025 NBA draft?

The fast-approaching 2025 NBA draft carries a lot of intrigue for Wisconsin Badgers fans. Much of that intrigue surrounds the draft stock of star wing John Tonje. The All-American is fresh off a dominant 2024-25 season that included per-game averages of 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists, plus shooting rates of 46.5% from the field, 39% from 3 and 91% from the free-throw line. Although that top-end production should generate significant NBA interest, he's an older draft prospect at 24 and may have already reached his offensive ceiling. Tonje is a near guarantee to be selected during the draft's first two rounds. The questions are, how early, and by which team? Tonje's draft position aside, Wisconsin basketball fans aren't restricted to following the college level. High school basketball in the state has reached new heights over the past few years, with several notable in-state products excelling in the NBA. Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton's breakout run to the NBA Finals headlines that list. Another notable player is poised to join Haliburton and other Wisconsin natives during this week's draft. In addition, several others are projected as undrafted free agents. Here are those players, plus where they stand in CBSSports' latest top-100 player ranking: Which Wisconsin natives are in position to be selected during the 2025 NBA draft? Duke guard Kon Knueppel UCLA guard Kobe Johnson Memphis guard Tyrese Hunter Knueppel is the one Wisconsin native likely to hear his name called during the draft. He's a projected top-10 pick after a standout true freshman season at Duke. Both Johnson and Hunter are ranked about 30 spots too low to threaten the draft's 59 picks. Therefore, both will likely look for an NBA Summer League or G League opportunity to showcase their talents and earn a full-time roster spot. That trio of Wisconsin natives will look to join a group in the NBA that currently includes Patrick Baldwin Jr., Johnny Davis, Tyler Herro, Tyrese Haliburton, Sam Hauser, Jalen Johnson, Kevon Looney, Jordan Poole, and others. Don't be surprised if Knueppel is a household name sooner rather than later. Projecting the Philadelphia Eagles' depth chart following OTAs and minicamp

With training camp now one month away, we're looking at an early depth chart prediction for the Philadelphia Eagles After a nine-week off-season program and one day of mandatory minicamp, the Philadelphia Eagles are on summer break, which means the team will be off until it regroups for training camp on July 21. Players will still be working out and training on their own, but there won't be any organized team activities or practices until camp commences. Even after suffering significant losses in free agency, the bulk of the Super Bowl champion roster is returning, and the Eagles will open the season as an early favorite to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in back-to-back seasons. So what does the depth chart look like as of now? There's no clear picture of how the coaching staff views things at every position, but we can at least project which players look like starters and who are the backups. Here's our latest projection of the training camp depth chart with OTAs and minicamp in the rearview. QB starter --Jalen Hurts 2nd--Tanner McKee 3rd-Kyle McCord (Rookie) 4th-Dorian Thompson-Robinson Hurts is the reigning Super Bowl MVP, and he'll enter 2025 with his fourth offensive coordinator in five years with the Eagles. After Kenny Pickett was traded to Cleveland, Tanner McKee became the unquestioned backup quarterback. At the same time, Dorian Thompson-Robinson offered an athletic option at No. 3. Things got even more interesting after Howie Roseman drafted Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord with pick No. 181 in the sixth round. The St. Joe's Prep star attended Ohio State before transferring and heading to Syracuse, where he demolished several of Donovan McNabb's school records. FB Starter--Ben VanSumeren RB Starter-Saquon Barkley 2nd-A.J. Dillon 3rd-Will Shipley 4th-Lew Nichols 5th-ShunDerrick Powell (undrafted rookie) 6th-Montrell Johnson Jr. (undrafted rookie) A.J. Dillon will replace Kenneth Gainwell in the lineup and battle Will Shipley for the backup running back spot. Ben VanSumeren will make the roster as a fullback. Philadelphia added two undrafted rookies in Montrell Johnson Jr. (Florida) and ShunDerrick Powell (Central Arkansas). Johnson, a 5-foot-11-inch, 216-pound running back, wrapped up an impressive college career with over 3,000 rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns. Known for his powerful running style, big-play ability, and reliable hands out of the backfield, Johnson became a solid running back for the Gators after transferring from Louisiana. A former Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and an East-West Shrine Bowl participant, Johnson made an impact everywhere he played. Powell rushed for over 4,000 yards in his collegiate career with 42 total touchdowns. He had eight 100-yard games in 2024. The two-time FCS All-American is a three-down running back and potential special-teams standout. WR Starter --A.J. Brown 2nd --Johnny Wilson 3rd--Danny Gray 4th-Darius Cooper (undrafted rookie) WR Starter --DeVonta Smith 2nd-Terrace Marshall Jr. 3rd--Elijah Cooks 4th-Taylor Morin (undrafted rookie) WR Starter--Jahan Dotson 2nd--Ainias Smith/Avery Williams 3rd-Giles Jackson (Tryout) TE Starter-Dallas Goedert 2nd-Grant Calcaterra 3rd-Kylen Granson/EJ Jenkins 4th-Harrison Bryant 5th-Nick Muse 6th-Cameron Latu Dallas Goedert is back on a restructured deal, and it wasn't a tough decision after the veteran (team-record 52 career playoff catches) led the Eagles in receptions (17) and receiving yards (215) in the postseason. Philadelphia has Grant Calcaterra as the backup after signing Kylen Granson and Harrison Bryant. LT Starter --Jordan Mailata 2nd--Kendall Lamm 3rd-Darian Kinnard/Myles Hinton 4th--Laekin Vakalahi (International Pathway program) LG Starter --Landon Dickinson 2nd--Trevor Keegan 3rd-Hollin Pierce- (Undrafted rookie) C Starter --Cam Jurgens 2nd-Landon Dickerson 3rd-Drew Kendall RG Starter--Tyler Steen 2nd--Kenyon Green 3rd-Matt Pryor Former Alabama offensive tackle and third-round pick Tyler Steen was slightly better, landing at 75th with a 40.7 grade from PFF. There will be competition for this spot, and it's a noticeable downgrade after Mekhi Becton's exit. RT Starter --Lane Johnson 2nd--Cameron Williams 3rd-Brett Toth Edge Rusher Starter --Nolan Smith 2nd --Azeez Ojulari 3rd- Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr. -Drafted Rookie 4th--KJ Henry DT Starter --Jalen Carter 2nd--Ty Robinson -Drafted Rookie 3rd-Thomas Booker IV 4th- Gabe Hall During the regular season, Jalen Carter was 4th among interior DL with an 81.5 PFF pass-rush grade, behind Chris Jones (91.0), Cameron Heyward (87.2), and Jeffery Simmons (81.6) in that category. Philadelphia selected Nebraska's Ty Brown in the fourth round for depth and physicality. DT Starter --Jordan Davis 2nd--Moro Ojomo 3rd--Byron Young Davis logged 27 tackles (15 solo), one sack, and two passes defended while playing in all 17 regular-season games in 2024. He added six tackles (four solo), including two sacks and one pass defense across four playoff appearances. Ojomo finished the 2024 season with 20 tackles (six solo) in 17 regular-season games. Ojomo saw a significant increase in workload in his second season with the Eagles, playing 370 defensive snaps and 70 snaps on special teams while appearing in all 17 of the team's regular-season games. Ojomo could be a starter, with Milton Williams departing. Edge Rusher Starter --Jalyx Hunt 2nd --Joshua Uche 3rd --Patrick Johnson 4th-Ochaun Mathis We're predicting Hunt will get the first shot at replacing Josh Sweat despite Josh Uche getting signed. Hunt finished the 2024 season with 21 total tackles (12 solo), including 1.5 sacks, while adding one pass defended and two forced fumbles over 16 regular-season games. LB Starter--Zack Baun 2nd-Jihaad Campbell 2nd-- Lance Dixon - (undrafted rookie) Baun is a Defensive Player of the Year finalist and All-Pro, while Trotter Jr. should get the first shot at replacing the injured Nakobe Dean. Baun was PFF's highest-graded LB (90.1) in the regular season, producing 150 tackles and 5 FFs (2nd in the NFL, behind T.J. Watt – 6). In the playoffs, Baun became the second NFL LB since 1991 to generate takeaways in each of their first four career postseason starts (Devin White in 2020), which included an INT of Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LIX. LB Starter-Jeremiah Trotter Jr. 2nd-Smael Mondon Jr. -Drafted Rookie 3rd -- Nakobe Dean (injury) 4th--Dallas Gant Philadelphia drafted Jihaad Campbell at No. 31 and Smael Mondon Jr. in the fifth round. Jrue Holiday trade grades: Who won Celtics and Blazers deal?

Jrue Holiday is on the move once again after the veteran has played for four teams (the Sixers, Pelicans, Bucks and Celtics), with Boston moving him to the rebuilding Portland Trail Blazers. It was fairly expected, wasn't it? The Celtics face some tough decisions this offseason to get them under the dreaded second apron, and this will absolutely help, especially as they wait for Jayson Tatum to come back from a torn Achilles. As for Holiday? He's an aging two-time NBA champion with an expensive contract. Advertisement With all that in mind, we'll hand out grades for both teams as we usually do. Let's dive in: Jrue Holiday trade details CELTICS GET: SG Anfernee Simons, two second-round picks BLAZERS GET: PG Jrue Holiday Celtics trade grade The Celtics will have trouble contending next season with Tatum out and that second apron status wasn't going to help them maneuver. So they had to trade the 35-year-old Holiday and his contract, which has over $66 million the next two seasons before he has a $37.2 million option in 2027-28. Getting Simons back isn't the worst. His contract will expire after this season and we know he can score. His defense? Not as good. But it's the kind of trade the Celtics need to make and they'll need scoring in place of Tatum this season. Advertisement A necessary move with a decent return. Not bad! GRADE: B+ Blazers trade grade As Portland tries to move toward getting back to the playoffs, they'll need some veteran help to get there. And yes, Holiday is past his prime. But maybe he's there to help young players like Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe and Donovan Clingan to learn how to win. On paper, it's a move to take on a large contract and get some picks in exchange, and I'd bet they weren't going to re-sign Simons anyway.
