THE free Smart Selangor bus service has recorded more than 76 million riders since it was introduced 10 years ago.
State investment, trade and mobility committee chairman Ng Sze Han said Selangor had spent more than RM180mil to provide the service since 2015.
'The Smart Selangor bus service now operates on 59 routes.
'Of these, 54 routes serve 252 schools, which is 26% of the total number of schools in Selangor.'
On whether the state planned to increase the number of bus routes, Ng said it would depend on demand.
'For now, our focus is on the demand-responsive transit (DRT) service, which we hope can provide better connectivity for first- and last-mile journeys.
'We are evaluating request for proposal (RFP) applications from potential DRT service providers and hope to roll out the service again in less than three months,' he said, adding that the routes were yet to be finalised.

StarMetro reported that during the RFP period, DRT service providers would not operate under the Selangor Mobility programme but could continue operations based on their own business plans.
The DRT service pilot phase ran from Nov 21, 2023, to July 31, 2024, in eight zones across Selangor, with 73,389 people having used the service.
Previously, there were two DRT service providers under Selangor Mobility – Trek Rides and Mobi.
Ng was speaking to reporters after launching the newly completed covered walkway at SMK Dato' Ahmad Razali in Kampung Melayu Ampang in Ampang.
'This area was one of the zones under the DRT pilot project, known as the Keramat Zone.
'Following the pilot project's completion, the state identified a continued need for the service and included it in the new tender process. The (DRT) vans can serve areas like SMK Dato' Ahmad Razali and Kampung Melayu Ampang, as they are able to navigate narrow routes.'
On the new walkway, Ng said it was expected to boost safety and comfort for students commuting to school.
The walkway, along with another in Bukit Indah and two bus stops, was built by Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) with a special RM1.15mil allocation from the state.

National Trades Union Congress exploring options to match retrenched Jetstar Asia staff to roles at SIA Group: Labour chief
Jetstar Asia said it will support the workers with retrenchment packages and employment support. - ST SINGAPORE: The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is exploring possible opportunities to match retrenched Jetstar Asia employees, including crew and corporate staff, to suitable roles with the Singapore Airlines Group, said labour chief Ng Chee Meng. Over 500 employees from Jetstar Asia will be retrenched following the closure of the Singapore-based low-cost airline on July 31. In a Facebook post on June 11, Ng said that the NTUC Aerospace and Aviation Cluster will work with Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Changi Airport Group to identify opportunities for the affected employees as well. He said: 'The news of Jetstar Asia's closure is a hit for the many employees of the airline. They have contributed much to the airline over the years.' He added that the NTUC and Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) were informed of the retrenchments in advance, and SMMWU has been working closely with Jetstar Asia to support the workers. The retrenchment benefits provided are in line with the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Excess Manpower and Responsible Retrenchment, but support goes beyond just financial compensation, Ng added. Starting next week, NTUC and NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute will be on-site at Changi Airport Terminal 1 to provide direct support, including career coaching, skills upgrading, and employability assistance, he said. In a statement on Wednesday (June 11), Jetstar Asia said it will support workers with retrenchment packages, employment support, or provide them with other opportunities within the Qantas group or with other airlines and aviation companies in Singapore. The airline's closure is part of a 'strategic restructure' by its parent company, Australian flag carrier Qantas. Retrenched employees will receive a redundancy payment of four weeks per year of service, a bonus for this financial year, a special 'thank you' payment as well as other benefits. In a separate statement, the Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) said it has worked closely with management and negotiated with the company to ensure that affected members and workers receive fair compensation. SMMWU is affiliated with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). Jetstar Asia has been unionised since 2009. An inter-agency task force on retrenchment said in a separate statement that it is working closely with Jetstar and the SMMWU to support the affected workers. Called the Taskforce for Responsible Retrenchment and Employment Facilitation, it comprises the Ministry of Manpower, Workforce Singapore, the NTUC and the NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute. 'Our priority is to help the affected employees with employment facilitation," said the taskforce in a statement. - The Straits Times/ANN

Expanded SST requires careful consideration, says ACCCIM
PETALING JAYA: There is a need for careful consideration of the timing and sequencing of measures regarding the expanded sales and services tax (SST), says the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM). It added that this is particularly relevant for mid-sized small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as increased business costs can lead to higher consumer inflation. ACCCIM president Datuk Ng Yih Pyng noted that the government is cautious in identifying areas for rate increases, aiming to minimise negative effects on the public and businesses. "However, the increased costs could dampen discretionary consumer spending due to higher prices of non-essential goods and a broader range of taxed services," said Ng in a statement on Wednesday (June 11). "The service tax on rental and leasing would raise operating costs for many businesses, given a low exemption threshold for MSMEs with annual sales below RM500,000. "We would like to appeal to the government to consider deferring the implementation of the expanded SST to a later date when macroeconomic conditions are more certain. "We agree with the concerns raised by business groups in the construction, services, and manufacturing sectors over the timing of the SST expansion, increased costs, lack of clarity, and insufficient time for preparation." Ng then said that the government should actively engage with all stakeholders, considering their interests to ensure clear and smooth implementation.

Global issues cloud 2H25 IPO outlook
PETALING JAYA: The initial public offering (IPO) market, which started the year on a subdued note, faces an uncertain second half (2H25) as weak market sentiment, global headwinds and poor earnings season continue to dampen investor appetite. A market watcher says the outlook for IPOs in 2H25 hinges on several unresolved global issues – including the outcome of potential US reciprocal trade tariffs expected in July, US-China trade tensions and the timing of a US interest rate cut, if any. 'The market sentiment isn't good. Last year, about 80% to 85% of IPOs performed well post-listing. 'This year, it's the complete opposite – nearly 80% have traded below their offer prices,' Tradeview Capital chief executive officer and founder Ng Zhu Hann told StarBiz. 'So, what changed? Largely, to me, it is – of course – market fatigue, fund flows, and also because the global situation has made a lot of investors, whether local, institutional, foreign funds or even local retail investors, very risk-averse. 'A lot of people are holding on to their cash rather than participating in the equity market.' Domestically, Ng said a lacklustre corporate earnings season has added to investor caution. To-date, 28 companies have been listed on Bursa Malaysia this year, with Paradigm Real Estate Investment Trust making its debut yesterday. Another three are expected to list by end-June – Ping Edge Technology Bhd (June 13), Cuckoo International (M) Bhd (June 24) and Pan Merchant Bhd (June 26) – bringing the first-half total to 31 IPOs. This puts Bursa Malaysia slightly past the halfway mark of its full-year target of 60 IPOs, but Ng warned that delays and repricings suggest growing caution among potential debutants. 'We've already seen two or three companies pushing back their listings,' said Ng. 'Several IPOs also revised their offer prices downward.' Cuckoo, which was initially scheduled to list on April 30, deferred its debut to June 24 due to 'near-term market challenges'. Its IPO price was also reported to have been revised to RM1.10 per share from RM1.29 previously, although this has yet to be confirmed by the company. Eco-Shop Marketing Bhd, which has since listed, similarly trimmed its IPO price to RM1.13 from RM1.21 before going public. Whether Bursa Malaysia hits its target of 60 listings this year now depends not just on pipeline readiness – but on whether the broader market gives debutants a reason to come forward. Across the shore, Singapore is taking a markedly different approach to reinvigorate its equity market. In February, the Monetary Authority of Singapore or MAS rolled out a bold S$5bil Equity Market Development Programme to boost liquidity on the Singapore Exchange by investing through selected fund managers focused on actively managed strategies targeting local small and mid-cap stocks. This is complemented by tax exemptions on fund manager income 'derived from funds investing substantially in Singapore-listed equities', a narrowed Global Investor Programme to channel more capital into listed equities, and expanded research grants to improve coverage and investor engagement in the equity market.
