SAWS warns public against fake winter cold-spell message
According to an article by Northcliff Melville Times, in clarifying the matter, SAWS explains that 'Aphelion' is indeed the point in earth's orbit when it is farthest from the sun. While this astronomical event is expected to occur on July 3 at 15:54, SAWS stresses that this distance variation has no significant impact on temperatures or seasons in South Africa. The nation's seasons are determined by the earth's axial tilt, not its distance from the sun.
SAWS urges the public to refrain from circulating this inaccurate information. According to its seasonal climate watch issued on Friday, both minimum and maximum temperatures are anticipated to be above normal for most of the country during winter. This means temperatures are expected to be warmer than typically experienced during South African winters.
While warmer conditions are generally forecast, SAWS acknowledges that South Africa will still be affected by various winter weather systems known to cause temperature drops, such as cold fronts and cut-off lows. The southern coastal regions are specifically predicted to experience below-normal temperatures for the remainder of the winter period.
Addressing another climate factor, SAWS confirms that the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (Enso) has returned to a neutral state and is expected to remain so for the foreseeable future. SAWS adds that Enso has limited influence on South Africa during winter and is not anticipated to have a significant impact.
As winter commences, rainfall is expected to focus primarily on the south-western parts of the country, as well as the east and south coastal regions. These areas are predicted to receive below-normal rainfall during the early, mid, and late winter periods.

Weather update: Cold weather to grapple Gauteng and three other provinces
Gauteng, the North West, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo will experience freezing temperatures as cold air is expected to move across the country starting Monday. According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), most areas in the province will remain clear initially, but significant changes are anticipated from midweek. Cool and sunny conditions are expected in many northern locations throughout the week. In Pretoria, Monday will bring cooler weather, with a minimum temperature of 4°C and a high of 15°C with clear sunny conditions. In Johannesburg, temperatures will drop to a low of 3°C, rising to 13°C by midday before cooling again in the evening. On Tuesday, temperatures are expected to rise slightly, reaching a maximum of 14°C in Johannesburg with no rainfall predicted. From Wednesday onward, temperatures in Gauteng are expected to improve, potentially signalling the end of winter as we approach August. Fine weather will continue in the northern parts of the country next week, including Limpopo and Mpumalanga, where it will remain warm. The SA Weather Service encourages the public to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings as conditions evolve throughout the week. Another Durban beach closes: Here's where and why
The eThekwini Municipality has once again released updated information regarding which Durban beaches and public pools are safe and open for swimming. According to the municipality, as of 23 July, another Durban beach has been closed for swimming due to poor water quality. This is in addition to the previously closed Reunion Beach. The currently closed Durban beaches are: 'This status of beaches and pools will be updated as and when their status changes. You can still enjoy other recreational activities at closed beaches. You just can't swim.' the municipality said.
