Farizal Marlias comments on JDT-Selangor rivalry

KUALA LUMPUR: Can Selangor give Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) a good fight in the Charity Shield on Aug 8?
Many Selangor fans do not think so following the Red Giants' unimpressive performance against an ageing Asia Warriors last Sunday in a friendly at MBPJ Stadium.
The Red Giants could only come up with a draw and never scored a goal, and their performance left Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi saying: "The result was not good enough. I'm not happy. I'm completely not happy."
Former national goalkeeper Farizal Marlias, who is now an Astro pundit, was asked about the JDT-Selangor rivalry during the M-League launch at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
"JDT have the best first eleven and are well prepared," he said.
"But when it comes to Selangor, I'm not so sure. From what I've seen recently, their performance is a little concerning. Still, I hope both teams can bring a positive impact to our league."
The former JDT player said the upcoming JDT versus Selangor match will be more than just an on-pitch rivalry.
"I hope it will be an entertaining match because everyone knows when these two teams meet, things usually get very intense and heated. So, I think that atmosphere will be something to be experienced.
"At the same time, it's important to show high-quality football. We know both teams have quality, and I hope the Super League gets off to a great start," said Farizal.

Soccer-Shin returns to South Korea vowing to revitalise champions Ulsan

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - AFC Asian Cup - Group D - Japan v Indonesia - Al Thumama Stadium, Doha, Qatar - January 24, 2024 Indonesia coach Tae-Yong Shin before the match REUTERS/Molly Darlington/File Photo (Reuters) -Former South Korea boss Shin Tae-yong has vowed to restore Ulsan HD to their former glory after making his return to frontline coaching with the South Korean champions seven months after being unceremoniously dumped by Indonesia. The 54-year-old has walked into a club attempting a rapid turnaround in the aftermath of a disappointing 13-month spell under predecessor Kim Pan-gon that has seen Ulsan surrender their status as the kings of Korean football. But the former midfielder is confident he can revitalise a club that has won the last three consecutive K-League titles. "Ulsan HD have been a powerhouse in the K-League for a long time," Shin said. "I will try to rebuild the dynasty here with everything I can." Ulsan's form has plummeted since Hong Myung-bo, who led his team to the league title in 2022 and 2023, left in July last year to take charge of the South Korea national team. His successor Kim managed to retain the K-League title only to oversee an embarrassingly early exit from the Asian Champions League Elite, a poor performance by a side that had reached the semi-finals in April 2024. The team's disappointing form carried into the new K-League season and, by the time of Kim's departure on Sunday, Ulsan were 23 points adrift of leaders Jeonbuk Motors with their title defence in tatters. It is that gulf which Shin will be expected to bridge as he returns to club football in South Korea for the first time in 13 years. During his previous spell in the K-League, Shin led Seongnam Ilhwa to the Asian Champions League title in 2010 and the Korean FA Cup a year later. He moved on from Seongnam to work with the national team, first as Uli Stielike's assistant before taking on the full-time role in 2017, when he won the East Asian Championship. In 2018 he led his country to the World Cup finals, where the Koreans handed champions Germany a 2-0 defeat that eliminated Joachim Loew's side from the competition. Shin took his services to Indonesia in 2020 and, in a four-year spell, led the Southeast Asian nation to the knockout rounds of the Asian Cup for the first time as well as to the third phase of the continent's 2026 World Cup preliminaries. And while he was cast aside by the Indonesians in January to make way for Patrick Kluivert, Shin retains the faith of enough decision makers within the South Korean game to be given the opportunity to revitalise Ulsan. "We have a great team here and if fans can just trust me and wait a bit patiently, I will put this team back in title contention," he said. (Reporting by Michael Church, Editing by Kim Coghill)

Super Sherman joins KL to fire up Super League push

PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur saved the best for last by unveiling their latest signing – super striker Kpah Sherman to bolster their squad ahead of the Super League starting on Friday. The former Pahang hitman joins Kuala Lumpur after the club also secured Johor Darul Ta'zim's (JDT) Safawi Rasid, Manuel Hidalgo, and Syamer Kutty Abba, signalling their intent for a stronger campaign. The 33-year-old Liberian brings a wealth of experience and firepower, having netted 76 goals in his last four seasons in Malaysia. His proven scoring record is expected to provide a major boost to the City Boys' frontline. Sherman was not the only new name Kuala Lumpur welcomed, as Pahang's Azrif Nasrulhaq will also be heading west to join Kuala Lumpur. The 34-year-old had been in Pahang's line-up since 2023, after joining on loan from JDT, but had made the move permanent last year. New Kuala Lumpur head coach Risto Vidakovic's plans to build his squad has been centered around chemistry, and the arrival of 25-year-old Fazrul Amir is also set to create excitement. 'One of Malaysia's most exciting young talents. He's here and is ready to shine. Welcome to the capital Fazrul!' the club said in an announcement. Besides the three new signings, Kuala Lumpur will also be boasting names such as defender Adam Nor Azlin and Syazwan Andik from Pahang, while also having brought in Filipino goalkeeper Quincy Kammerad. KL, who finished sixth last season, will open their campaign against newcomers Immigration on Saturday at the Penang State Stadium a day after the Charity Shield game between JDT and Selangor in Johor.

Spaniard Muniz says adios after three memorable years with JDT

PETALING JAYA: Spanish midfielder Juan Muniz (pic) has bid farewell to Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) – the club he has called home for the past three years. The 33-year-old's contract with the Southern Tigers has come to an end, and Muniz took to social media to announce his departure, with a heavy heart. 'After three unforgettable years, it's time to close a very special chapter in my life,' said Muniz. 'I'm saying goodbye to JDT with a heart full of gratitude for everything I've experienced at this club,' he said. Muniz joined JDT from Greek club Atromitos, and has since made 42 appearances for the Southern Tigers and scored 15 goals. He also thanked team owner, the Regent of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, and sporting director Kiko Insa for their belief in him. 'Thanks also to my teammates, the staff, and all the fans for making this journey truly unique. 'Johor will always be a part of me. See you in the future!' he said. Muniz's departure also saw well wishes from his current and former teammates, with Arif Aiman Hanapi saying, 'Thank you my bro, all the best in the future!' Midfielder Syamer Kutty Abba, who is on loan from JDT to Kuala Lumpur, said, 'Good luck my Gareth Bale!' Muniz was among the three finalists for the Best Import Player award at the 2024-2025 National Football Awards, which went to teammate Bergson Da Silva. Among Muniz's highlights with the club was at last season's FA Cup final, when he was named best player after scoring a hattrick during JDT's 6-1 win against Selangor at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
