BRITAIN is leading plans to build a hypersonic plane that could fly on the edge of space and travel from London to New York City in 60 minutes.
With a breakthrough design and cutting-edge technology, "The Sabre" will be able to fly at a speed of Mach 5 (4000mph) - which is five times the speed of sound.

And engineers are inching closer to putting the state-of-the-art machine in the skies - which could happen as early as 2031.
The £6million plan to develop the jet of the future is called Invictus, which is being led by UK-based Frazer-Nash consultants.
Plans launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) are to develop a fully reusable experimental aircraft that can fly at sustained hypersonic speeds.
It will fly on the edge of space and will also have horizontal takeoff capabilities.
This means that flying time from London to New York will be slashed from seven hours to just 60 minutes.
The Invictus testing vehicle will be upgradable, allowing for the exchange of materials, software and propulsion systems between flight test campaigns.
At the centre of the futuristic technology is a pre-cooler system, which has been tested for the Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine (Sabre).
Sabre engines combine aspects of jet and rocket propulsion and can pull oxygen out of the air during flight at lower levels of Earth's atmosphere, increasing efficiency.
While flying at speeds such as Mach 5, overheating and air friction are the main problems.
Pre-cooler systems solve this problem, cooling "the air before it reaches the engine, allowing conventional aircraft engines to travel at hypersonic speeds," Frazer-Nash said in a statement.

It is understood that over the next 12 months, the highly-skilled team at Invictus will finish the concept design and develop a full flight system for the aircraft to fly by 2031.
Sarah Wilkes, chief at Frazer-Nash said: "INVICTUS is an exciting opportunity to provide advanced technology for space and advanced capabilities in defence.
"With strong industry support and deep engineering and aerospace expertise, including Frazer-Nash colleagues with a decade of propulsion experience, we have all the right ingredients to make this ambitious vision a reality.'
Tony Forsythe, Head of Space Technology at the UK Space Agency, added: 'This exciting project, made possible by our investments in the European Space Agency, has significant potential to build on advanced cooling and hypersonic propulsion technology developed by UK engineers over many years."
Meanwhile, a hypersonic passenger jet which could take travelers from London to New York City in just one hour is set to arrive as "as soon as the 2030s".
The Venus Stargazer is being developed by Venus Aerospace who revealed that it was planning a flight demo "later this summer".
The company said that thanks to a Nasa-funded breakthrough, the "record-setting" engine system is nearly ready to try out for real.
Venus hopes that its rocket engine will be able to blast passengers around the Earth in record time.
"Stargazer M4 is Earth's first hypersonic, reusable aircraft," Venus Aerospace boasted.
"No one has ever built a hypersonic platform that makes two-hour global transport cost-effective. Until now.
Meanwhile, a massive plane dubbed the 'Skytanic' is set to take to the skies by 2030.
The US is reportedly planning for a 'Son of Blackbird' jet that could become the world's fastest plane.
And another hypersonic jet could whisk passengers from London to Sydney in just two hours.

ChatGPT is launching a 'study mode' to encourage responsible academic use of the chatbot, amid rising cases of misuse of artificial intelligence tools at universities. The feature, which can be accessed via the chatbot's tools button, can walk users through complex subjects in a step-by-step format akin to an unfolding academic lesson. In one example released by ChatGPT's developer, OpenAI, the chatbot responds to a prompt asking for help with understanding Bayes' theorem – a mathematical formula – by asking the user what level of maths they are comfortable with and what their goal is. Study mode is being released as academic communities grapple with the issue of AI misuse. A Guardian survey of academic integrity violations in the UK found almost 7,000 proven cases of cheating using AI tools in 2023-24, equivalent to 5.1 for every 1,000 students. That compared with 1.6 cases per 1,000 in 2022-23. More than a third of college-age young adults in the US use ChatGPT, according to OpenAI, with about a quarter of their chatbot messages referring to learning, tutoring and schoolwork. The study mode is designed to avoid simply serving up a complete essay or exam answer, with OpenAI saying it 'doesn't just offer solutions without helping students make sense of them'. However, students will still be able to take an academic shortcut if they ignore the study mode option. Jayna Devani, the international education lead at ChatGPT's US-based developer, OpenAI, said the company did not want ChatGPT to be misused by students and the tool was a 'step toward' encouraging constructive academic use of ChatGPT. 'How do we take that step forward in showing that there are responsible ways to engage with ChatGPT – to engage with ChatGPT to actually support a learning process? We definitely don't believe that these tools should be misused and this is one step toward that,' she said. Devani acknowledged that tackling academic cheating would require a 'whole industry conversation' about changing assessments and drawing up 'very unambiguous guidelines about what constitutes responsible AI use'. OpenAI said study mode – billed as 'study and learn' in the chatbot's tools options – was especially useful for homework help, exam preparation and learning new topics. SAN FRANCISCO, July 29 (Reuters) - Enfabrica, a Silicon Valley-based chip startup working on solving bottlenecks in artificial intelligence data centers, on Tuesday released a chip-and-software system aimed at reining in the cost of memory chips in those centers. Enfabrica, which has raised $260 million in venture capital to date and is backed by Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab, released a system it calls EMFASYS, pronounced like "emphasis." The system aims to address the fact that a portion of the high cost of flagship AI chips from Nvidia or rivals such as Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O), opens new tab is not the computing chips themselves, but the expensive high-bandwidth memory (HBM) attached to them that is required to keep those speedy computing chips supplied with data. Those HBM chips are supplied by makers such as SK Hynix ( opens new tab and Micron Technology (MU.O), opens new tab. The Enfabrica system uses a special networking chip that it has designed to hook the AI computing chips up directly to boxes filled with another kind of memory chip called DDR5 that is slower than its HBM counterpart but much cheaper. By using special software, also made by Enfabrica, to route data back and forth between AI chips and large amounts of lower-cost memory, Enfabrica is hoping its chip will keep data center speeds up but costs down as tech companies ramp up chatbots and AI agents, said Enfabrica Co-Founder and CEO Rochan Sankar. Rochan said Enfabrica has three "large AI cloud" customers using the chip but declined to disclose their names. "It's not replacing" HBM, Sankar told Reuters. "It is capping (costs) where those things would otherwise have to blow through the roof in order to scale to what people are expecting."
