Railway Ministry allows opening of single brand premium stores at stations
The Railway Ministry has authorized Zonal Railways to allocate single-brand, company-owned premium outlets at stations through e-auctions, responding to a South Central Railway proposal. This decision allows for premium locations to be identified based on footfall and passenger demographics. Remove Ads Zonal Railways can allot single-brand, company-owned premium outlets at stations through e-auctions if there is a demand and justification for the same, the Railway Ministry has an official communication dated August 11, 2025, the Ministry responded to a proposal of the South Central Railway for guidelines regarding the opening of premium single-brand outlets on a par with airports and said that after examining the matter, it has been decided that the stalls can be allotted within the existing policy and not on a nomination basis."The Divisions/Zonal Railways concerned shall identify premium locations and suitable product/service categories based on footfall, space availability, passenger demographics and other relevant station-specific characteristics," the Ministry Ministry has clarified that the allotments of the stalls would be as per the governing e-auction policy."For awarding such contracts, a dedicated "Premium Stores" segment may be created within the e-auction module. The successful bidder can decide the brand/s for the outlet," the Ministry asked the zones to ensure that such stalls should enhance the ambience of the stations and the image of Indian Railways."The Divisions concerned may formulate the Special Conditions of the contract as per the requirements," the Ministry the South Central Railway (SCR) wrote to the Ministry and said that Station Redevelopment Works, both Major Upgradation and ABSS (The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme), at many of its stations are targeted for completion during the current financial year of 2025-26."In tune with the world class facilities being provided to the passengers, there is need to permit Premium Single Brand Outlets of various non-catering categories like travel accessories (Samsonite/American Tourister/VIP etc), Apparels (Arrow/Van Heusen/Peter England/Biba etc), Footwear and Sportsgear (Nike/Adidas/Reebok etc) and other items at stations on par with similar facilities available to passengers at airports," the SCR added, "It is therefore requested to issue guidelines for provision of Premium Single Brand Outlets at stations under NFR (Non-Fare Revenue) at the earliest so that commercial spaces developed at the stations under Major Upgradation and ABSS are put to effective use not only for providing enhanced passenger experience but also for improving revenue to Railways.

The Vande Bharat train connecting Belagavi and Bengaluru that was flagged off on Sunday is the fastest train on the route and reduces the travel time by 80 minutes, officials said. It was one of the three trains launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bengaluru. The train would link Belagavi, known for its top medical and engineering colleges, with state capital Bengaluru, often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India. The commercial run of the train will start from Monday (August 11) and it will run on six days except Wednesday, a press note from South Western Railway Zone (SWR) said. Officials said the train has an 8-coach chair car configuration with a seating capacity of 530. "The KSR Bengaluru - Belagavi Vande Bharat Express, the fastest train on this route, covers 611 km in just 8.5 hours, saving about 1 hour 20 minutes compared to other trains," the press note said. "The scenic journey, passing through the rich sugarcane belt from Belagavi to Bengaluru, fosters economic growth and connects diverse communities across the region," it said. They said the advanced state-of-the-art suspension system ensures a smooth and safe journey and enhanced riding comfort for passengers. The train travels through Dharwad, known for its prestigious educational institutions; Hubballi, a major commercial and industrial centre; Haveri, a growing agricultural hub; Davangere, renowned for its textile and agricultural contributions and Tumakuru, an emerging industrial and educational centre. "These stops enhance connectivity for students, professionals, farmers, and traders, providing faster access to Bengaluru's opportunities," the SWR said. "The Belagavi-KSR Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express exemplifies India's strides in modern rail travel, offering a faster, more comfortable journey while strengthening connectivity between key economic and cultural hubs in Karnataka," it added. This is the 11th Vande Bharat train originating from Karnataka to various destinations in the country. According to the Railway Ministry, with the introduction of the three trains, there are 75 Vande Bharat trains in the country that make 150 trips daily across 24 states. Besides, the Belagavi-Bengaluru Vande Bharat, the prime minister also launched Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Amritsar and Ajni (Nagpur)-Pune Vande Bharat services virtually.
