NDA ally demands caste survey in Tamil Nadu, show of strength at conference

India Today12-05-2025

In a powerful display of political revival and community mobilisation, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss led the Chithirai Muzhu Nilavu Vanniyar Youth Conference near Mahabalipuram on Sunday.'Every year, for thousands of years, our community has been celebrating Chithirai Full Moon celebrations in the place which was ruled by us. This time, we're here not just to celebrate, but to demand a caste survey,' Anbumani declared to an audience he claimed ran into lakhs. 'We thank Prime Minister Modi for announcing the caste census. But what we need is micro-level data, like what Bihar did. That will only come if the Tamil Nadu government conducts its own survey under the Indian Statistical Act, 2008.'advertisement'Though the Union government has decided, our man has not decided yet,' Anbumani said, taking a dig at Chief Minister MK Stalin.
He slammed Chief Minister MK Stalin for 'misleading the Assembly' by claiming that the state lacked the authority to conduct a caste survey. 'How are Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra and Odisha able to do it then? Is Tamil Nadu in China or Japan?' he asked, drawing loud cheers from the crowd. He also called Chief Minister Stalin's current stance a betrayal and accused him of lying in Assembly. He asked how during the earlier regimes, both MGR and Stalin's father Karunanidhi were able to undertake caste-based data collection. 'If that is so, how did your father conduct the survey? How did MGR initiate door-to-door enumeration?'Questioning the ideological stance of the ruling party, Anbumani said, 'Lies are being propagated in the Assembly and outside. Isn't your ideology to provide for the underprivileged? Of the 115 communities in most backward classes, 114 comes to 6.8% while Vanniyar community comes up to 18%. It is not just enough to talk about Social Justice alone. You are not qualified to speak about Social Justice. The Chief Minister is lying that he does not have the authority,' Anbumani lashed out at the DMK government and the chief minister.advertisementAnbumani accused successive Dravidian parties of treating the Vanniyar community — one of the largest in Tamil Nadu — as just a vote bank. 'You remember us during elections. In 1957, 14 of DMK's 15 winning seats were in Vanniyar constituencies. Even today, there are 23 Vanniyar MLAs in the Assembly. Yet we still live in hutments and work as daily wagers,' he said.Ramadoss declared that 'extensive and historic protests' would be announced if the 10.5% internal reservation for Vanniyars was not implemented, adding that the community was ready to make 'any sacrifice necessary.'RESOLUTION AND POLITICAL SIGNALSAt the conference, PMK passed 14 resolutions, most focused on reservations. One demanded a separate caste survey by the state to supplement the Union government's caste census, arguing that without it, Tamil Nadu's unique 69% reservation quota could come under legal threat.'Without data, we will never know who is actually benefiting from reservations,' said Anbumani. 'If I were Chief Minister, my first order would be to conduct a caste survey. Lies are being propagated both inside and outside the Assembly. You cannot claim to stand for social justice while denying data and fair quotas.'He also called for extending reservations to the private sector, especially in Group B and C jobs that are increasingly outsourced, and proposed revenue-sharing models for land acquisition. 'If I decide to build a ten-lane highway, I will make the landowner a stakeholder, not hand it over to Adani or Ambani. Why should only they benefit?' he asked, taking aim at big corporates.advertisementHe criticised the DMK for failing to act on the recommendations of the Janardhanan Commission, which had suggested 13.1% internal reservation for the Vanniyar community, even while accepting similar recommendations for Arunthathiyars and Muslims.SOCIAL JUSTICE, NOT JUST INFRASTRUCTURE'This is not a show of strength, this is a call for justice,' Anbumani declared, addressing the massive turnout. 'Lakhs of my brothers and sisters have gathered here because they are fed up. The Vanniyar community and other backward classes have been repeatedly sidelined by the DMK government, which has no real concern for social justice.'He criticised the state's development priorities, stating, 'Real development isn't about malls, tech parks, smart cities, or highways. It's about empowering people through education and employment—and that is the core demand of this conference.' Stressing that the demand for a caste survey has been consistent for two years, he warned that protests would only intensify until the state government acts.advertisementPMK founder S Ramadoss issued a warning of 'extensive and historic protests' unless the state government acted on Vanniyar internal reservations. 'The community is ready to make any sacrifice,' he said, while also warning party office-bearers of consequences if their performance didn't improve.Despite internal power tussles and questions over his leadership, Anbumani struck a defiant and ambitious note. 'Until now, we've been a community that gives petitions. It's time we become the community that receives them.'TAKING AIM AT ACTOR-POLITICIAN VIJAYAnbumani warned young voters against 'those who speak cinema dialogues,' in a veiled swipe at actor-turned-politician Vijay. 'Don't go behind anyone else. Come behind me. I live for you. The time has come, we should rule.'He asserted that the PMK would decide its electoral alliances closer to the 2026 Assembly polls. 'Elections are 10 months away. We will take the decision at the right time,' he said, amid speculation over PMK's stance after the BJP-AIADMK alliance took shape without them.'If we come to power,' he concluded, 'we will make Tamil Nadu like Singapore — and implement true social justice.'On alliances, with AIADMK already finalising its pact with the BJP, Anbumani remained non-committal, saying, 'Elections are ten months away. We will decide at the right time.' PMK has been allied with the National Democratic Alliance, led by the BJP.advertisementHISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE, MODERN OPTICSThis was the first time in 12 years that the Chithirai conference — historically significant for the Vanniyar community — was held, and it marked PMK's biggest outreach event, which gained importance amid renewed internal tensions and electoral uncertainty.Father and son — S Ramadoss and Anbumani — shared the stage at the conference despite their recent public spat over party leadership. Last month, the elder Ramadoss announced that he was resuming control of the PMK, effectively sidelining Anbumani, who was elected by the party's general council. At the conference, Anbumani took centre stage, outlining an aggressive roadmap focused on social justice and internal reservation for Vanniyars. The 2013 edition had led to caste clashes and the arrest of senior PMK leaders, including founder S Ramadoss.Must Watch

B'luru stampede: Somanna slams govt, defends suspended top cop

Mysuru: Union minister of state for railways V Somanna on Sunday said even an entire year's state budget cannot compensate for the tragic loss of lives in the stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium. His remarks came in response to questions from the media regarding the Karnataka govt's revised compensation of Rs 25 lakh per victim, up from the initial Rs 10 lakh. "Even the amount of one full year's state budget cannot compensate for the lives lost in the stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium," Somanna said. "Royal Challengers Bengaluru reached the IPL finals after 18 years, and the authorities should have planned accordingly. Unfortunately, the chief minister mishandled the situation. Perhaps, he acted on poor advice from his associates," he added. The minister also criticised the suspension of Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda, calling it unjust. "I've known the work of IPS officer Dayananda for many years. His suspension is unfair, especially when he had no direct role in the stampede. It was a good decision to appoint him as commissioner, and he should be reinstated immediately. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Promoções imperdíveis de voos baratos Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo Govt has gone off track, and they must be held accountable for this tragedy," he added. Reflecting on his past association with CM Siddaramaiah, Somanna expressed disappointment over what he described as a shift in leadership style. "I was in the Congress and was very close to Siddaramaiah. I knew him well — he was not like this. Power seems to have changed him. In the Congress party, no other leader in the country has been given the kind of freedom Siddaramaiah enjoys. It looks like he has changed just to survive as chief minister. This is not the Siddaramaiah I once knew," he said. Somanna also spoke about his personal transformation after becoming a Union minister. "In the past year, after becoming minister of railways and observing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's daily routine and work ethic, I've changed myself," he said. "The state govt should take note of how the Prime Minister functions. They should visit Delhi and see his discipline and dedication first hand. I'm deeply impressed by Modi's style of governance," he added.

Age is only a number, says Ramadoss; hints at resolution of conflict with son

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss on Sunday (June 8, 2025) said, 'Age is only a number', reeling out names of popular 'older' politicians such as former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed, suggesting he still has enough fight in him in politics. However, he appeared optimistic about giving 'good news' about the resolution of his conflict with his son Anbumani Ramadoss, which threatens to split the party. Also read: Anbumani not to react to Ramadoss' accusations, plans three-day meet with PMK functionaries Interacting with journalists in Chennai, Dr. Ramadoss confirmed he did meet with RSS ideologue and Thuglak editor S. Gurumurthy again in Chennai (following an earlier meeting in his native town), but refused to reveal whether discussions with him and with Dr. Anbumani, were fruitful. PMK's party constitution Sources in the party said Dr. Ramadoss is seeking larger share of the powers to operate while asking Dr. Anbumani to continue as the 'working president'. Dr. Anbumani has reportedly agreed to allow his father to take the lead in deciding the electoral alliance and negotiating the seats while he wished to remaining as the party's 'president', a post to which he was earlier anointed unanimously. Also read: Making Anbumani a Cabinet Minister was my mistake: PMK founder Ramadoss 'Dr. Ayya (Ramadoss) wants powers to sign Form A and Form B too, which would give him powers over selection of candidates and make appointments. But, Dr. Anbumani wants to be allowed to continue as president and make appointments within the party,' said a senior leader. In the party's bylaws, Rule 13 states that party founder should be invited and his guidance is necessary to call for the general council and executive council meetings. However, Rule 15 explicitly states the party president, appointed by the general council, will head the party's political committee, executive council, general council, and state conference and has the powers to control the party's funds, properties owned by the party and its bank accounts. Rule 12 states that the general council will consist of district presidents, district secretaries, treasurer, vice-president, deputy secretary and area secretaries at the Union, Town Panchayats, municipal corporations and corporations along with representatives from linguistic, religious, and caste-based minorities. The executive council will consist of party president, general secretary, treasurer, organisation secretary, deputy general secretaries, vice-presidents, headquarters secretaries, disciplinary action committee members, property protection group and district presidents and secretaries make up the party's executive council. A senior leader says while it is true that general council has to be held in the presence of the party founder and its affairs conducted under his guidance, it is not binding on the general council to accept his guidance or decisions. 'The president continues to have the powers to appoint office bearers, which makes up the general council. Ultimately, the general council can reject his guidance. This is perhaps why Doctor Ayya began removing and re-appointing district president, secretaries and other office bearers. But, I don't think he (Dr. Ramadoss) has the powers to do it,' he added.

NDA will form govt in Tamil Nadu in 2026; people will throw out DMK: Amit Shah

Madurai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 8 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that the NDA will form government in Tamil Nadu as the people of the state will 'defeat' the DMK government in the 2026 Assembly election. He also reiterated his demand to the state government for teaching medical and engineering courses in the Tamil language. 'The NDA government of the BJP-AIADMK alliance will be formed here in 2026. I live in Delhi, but my ears are always on Tamil Nadu,' Shah said while addressing BJP office-bearers in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. 'MK Stalin says that Amit Shah cannot defeat DMK. He is right. It's not me, but the people of Tamil Nadu will defeat you,' he added. The Union Minister said that he expected Chief Minister Stalin to write to PM Modi, thanking him for installing Sengol in Parliament. 'I want to repeat my demand to the Tamil Nadu government that medical and engineering be taught in the Tamil language soon. PM Modi respected Tamil Nadu by installing Sengol in Parliament, and I expect MK Stalin to write a letter to the PM to thank him for it,' he said. Shah said that before Modi became Prime Minister, there were more deadly terror attacks than in Pahalgam, but there was no befitting reply. 'Our innocent citizens were killed in the Pahalgam terror attack. Terrorists killed them after asking their religion. Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, our three armed forces entered Pakistan and killed terrorists. There were many terrorists attack before Modi became Prime Minister, but there was no befitting reply,' he said. 'After Modi ji became Prime Minister in 2014, the Uri, Pulwama, and now Pahalgam attacks took place. With surgical strike, airstrike, and Operation Sindoor, we have given a befitting reply to terrorists responsible for these attacks,' he added. Shah thanked the people of Tamil Nadu for their warm response to the Tiranga Yatra, which was held to honour the bravery of the armed forces in Operation Sindoor. He said that the people of Tamil Nadu will 'throw out' the DMK government in next year's Assembly elections. 'I have had participated in election campaigns across the country. I know the pulse of the public. This time, the people of Tamil Nadu will throw out the DMK government,' he said. 'In 2025, we formed the government in Delhi, in 2026, BJP-NDA will form the government in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu,' he added. (ANI)
